Typical of them are 8mm images in Atlanta and Chicago Stadium, which can still be easily seen on YouTube. However, it is also true that they are all very fragmentary. However, the new 8mm footage that was suddenly unearthed on YouTube last week was a shocking footage that lightly dismissed them.
It captured the stage in Detroit on December 4th. Two shows were held on this day, but this time the video captures the first show. それらの典型がアトランタやシカゴ・スタジアムでの8mm映像であり、現在もYouTube上にて簡単に見られるもの。とはいえ、それらは非常に断片的なものばかりであるのも事実。ところが先週、突如としてYouTube上に出土した新たな8mm映像はそれらを軽く一蹴する衝撃的な映像だったのです。
それが12月4日、デトロイトのステージを捉えたもの。この日は都合二回のショーが行われましたが、今回の映像が捉えているのはファースト・ショー。まずアングルが非常に素晴らしく、先に挙げたアトランタやシカゴを軽く凌駕するほど。それ以上に特筆すべきは何と言っても画質の素晴らしさ。そこへ現在の最新技術にてトランスファーされたこともあり、まるでニュース用に撮影されたのでは？と錯覚しそうになるほどの鮮明さには目を奪われること間違いなし。
実際アングルも画質も非常に優れていることから、アトランタの会場で売られていてジョージ自身が気に入っていたという彼の似顔絵シャツを上着の中に着ていたことがはっきり確認できるほどの極上アングル。
それに74年ツアーと言えば残された写真が物語っていたようにジョージの派手めなファッションの印象が強いのですが、この日は例のアトランタ・シャツの上にダンガリーシャツという、いい意味でこのツアーでは異色のシンプルな出で立ちが見る者に鮮烈な印象を与えます。

こうして画質やアングルだけでも見応え十分な映像な訳ですが、さらに過去の映像と一線を画すのは30分にも及ぶ収録時間。このツアーのオープニング・ナンバーである「Hari’s On Tour (Express)」でスライドギターを決めるジョージの姿を見ただけでも、いかに今回の映像が優れていて、なおかつ貴重なものであるか思い知らされるはず。
これまで出回っていた映像はライブ前半の模様を捉えたものが多かったのに対し、今回の映像はライブが後半に差し掛かったところまでダイジェストながらも捉えてくれているのがエライ。
「For You Blue」ではジョージからロベン・フォードやウィリー・ウィークスにソロ回しする場面もちゃんと捉えてくれており、見ていて思わず身を乗り出しそうになってしまいます。極めつけはジョージがこのツアーでカバーした「In My Life」を歌う姿まで見られるようになったという事。それだけでもマニアなら感涙モノなはず。
おまけに当時の新曲であった「Maya Love」を演奏する場面まで捉えてくれているのですが、そこでジョージがビートルズ時代から使っていたサイケデリック・ペイントのストラトキャスターでスライドギターを弾いていた姿が見られるというのにも感動させられます。

そして当初映像がYouTube上に現れた際は8mmらしく音声がない状態だったのですが、数日後に別のマニアが同日のオーディエンス録音をシンクロさせたバージョンを公開して一気に見やすくなったのでした。
もっとも同日の音源はジョージの楽曲のみしか録音されていませんでしたので、シャンカール・ファミリーの「Dispute & Violence」とLA・エキスプレスの「Tom Cat」に関しては11月のLAフォーラムでのサウンドボード録音がアフレコされていますが、インストゥルメンタルだけに違和感がない。さらにビリー・プレストンの二曲に関してはデトロイトの次のショーであったトロントのオーディエンス録音が被せられており、これまた自然に映像と合わさってくれている。
こうしてオーディエンスショットとしては信じがたいほどのクオリティを誇る映像がさらにバージョンアップを遂げ、ジョージ74年のライブ・ムービーとして十分鑑賞に耐える仕上がりとなったのです。今までビジュアル面の資料が限られていたジョージ伝説のツアー、これぞ貴重映像の鏡！
