A shocking DAT master has arrived from the heavyweight taper living in the UK! From the European tour at the end of the 1998 world tour that started at the same time as the release of the album “PILGRIM”, the London Earl’s Court performance on October 15th is recorded on an official level, or even more powerful than the official, clear stereo soundboard recording. This is a first generation DAT master completely recorded. Although there is a previously released version of this day, this DAT master has a more natural texture compared to the one that emphasizes the mid-low range. If you listen to this powerful sound with depth and spaciousness, you will understand the greatness of the master at a glance. A number of great sound sources have been released from the 1998 tour, including soundboard sources, but the value of this album is not only the superb sound quality, but also the high quality performance in the main set and the gorgeous encore that became a hot topic, making it a great choice for Clapton fans. Also, during Clapton’s career, it had become customary for Clapton to hold a series of performances at the Royal Albert Hall at the beginning of the year, but RAH was unable to book the London performance that year as it was in the autumn. The reason why I was so excited is because Clapton dedicated this album to the memory of his young son, who died in an unexpected accident in 1991, and created it during the process of reevaluating his life. is. This album, mostly composed of his own compositions, was rich in introspective messages from Clapton, so by featuring songs from the album on that tour, Clapton shared those messages with fans around the world live on stage. Clapton in these 6 songs is full throttle and shows off his passionate and emotional play even more than the studio version. In order to express the album’s songs better than the original versions in this part, Clapton appointed Andy Fairweather Rowe and Alan Darby (formerly of Asia) as side guitarists for this tour, creating a triple guitar system (plus , the depth of the sound produced by the double keyboard is outstanding). イギリス在住の重鎮テーパーから、衝撃のDATマスターが到着しました！アルバム「PILGRIM」リリースと同時に開始された1998年ワールド・ツアー終盤のヨーロッパ・ツアーから、10月15日のロンドンアールズ・コート公演をオフィシャルレベル、いやオフィシャルを超えるド迫力、ドンピカクリアなステレオ・サウンドボード録音で完全収録したファーストジェネレーションのDATマスターです。この日の既発盤は存在しますが、中低音域を強調したそれに対し、このDATマスターはよりナチュラルな質感を有しています。この深みと広がりのあるド迫力サウンドを聴いていただければマスターの素晴らしさは一聴瞭然です。1998年ツアーからはサウンドボードソースを含め、名音源が数々リリースされていますが、本盤の価値はこの極上音質に加え、メインセットにおけるクオリティの高いパフォーマンスとトピックとなった豪華なアンコールゆえにクラプトンファンの皆さんには高く評価していただけるものと考えます。
またクラプトンのキャリアにおいては、ロンドン公演と言えば年初にロイヤル・アルバート・ホールで連続公演を行なうのが恒例になっていましたが、この年のロンドン公演は秋、ということでRAHがブッキングできず、アールズ・コートとなったようです。彼のキャリア上、アールズ・コートで公演したのはこの年だけでした（後年、アールズ・コートは客席も遠くに感じ、サウンドの鳴りも気に入らないので、好きな会場ではないと告白していました）。そのため、会場としても非常にレアなライブだったと言えますので、その点でもコレクトしていただく価値があるかと思います。

日本には前年に来ていましたので、アジア圏は回りませんでしたが、気合の入ったアルバム同様、ほぼワールド・ツアークラスの規模で実施されたツアーでした。なぜ気合が入ったのかと言いますと、当該アルバムはクラプトンが1991年に不慮の事故で亡くなった幼い息子さんとの思い出に捧げ、自分の人生を見詰め直した過程で作り上げたものだったからです。大半が自作曲で埋められたこのアルバムはクラプトンからの内省的メッセージに富んだものであったため、そのツアーでもアルバムの楽曲をフィーチャーすることで、クラプトンは世界中のファンにライブステージでそのメッセージを届けようと考えていました。オープニングから6曲連続でアルバムからのナンバーをプレイしていることでそれは証明されていると言えるでしょう。この6曲でのクラプトンはエンジン全開、スタジオバージョン以上に情熱的でエモーショナルなプレイを披露しています。このパートでアルバム収録曲をオリジナルバージョン以上に表現するため、このツアーではクラプトンはサイドギタリストにアンディ・フェアウェザー・ロウとアラン・ダービー（元エイジア）を起用し、トリプルギター体制を築きました（プラス、ダブルキーボードによる音の厚みは群を抜いています）。さらには、アルバム同様に20名のストリングオーケストラを帯同したことで、アルバムの完全再現を実現しています。この点も聴きものですが、それ以降の従来のナンバーでもストリングアレンジが加えられていることで、クラプトンのライブステージとしては、この時だけでしか聴けないレアなテイクとなっていることも、大きな聴きどころです。ピルグリムナンバーで一つの区切りをつけた後は自らをクールダウンするかのように、しっとりとプレイするアコースティックセットに移ります。アコースティックセットでのTears in HeavenとChange the Worldにはストリングオーケストラが加わっており、アコギとストリングが織りなすサウンドが絶妙なものとなっています。エレクトリックセットに戻っての一発目はOld Love。ここでクラプトンは二人のキーボーディストの長尺ソロを挟みながらエモーションの極みと言えるプレイを披露します。I Shot the Sheriffの後奏では、エンディングなどまったく意識していないかのような、思いつくままの弾き捲りが延々聴かれます。また、Wonderful Tonightはストリングオーケストラが加わり、この曲をよりロマンチックに演出しているという秀逸なテイクです。あとは王道のヒット曲Cocaineで大団円へ。最高のサウンドボード録音だけに、多楽器編成のバンドに加え、ストリングオーケストラの響きが見事に相まったサウンドを全編でお楽しみいただけます。
【キャリア上でも歴史に残る、豪華なゲスト参加とレア曲のアンコール！】
ここまででも名演と言えるクオリティを提示したステージでしたが、この日のアンコールにはこの日だけの特別なトピックがありました。女性ブルース・スライドギタリストの第一人者ボニー・レイットが飛入り参加したのです。選ばれた曲はBefore You Accuse Me 。クラプトンもよく取り上げるバリバリのブルースで両者のギターバトルが味わえます（レイットはもちろんスライドをプレイ）。楽しいセッションが展開されているのが手に取るように分かります。さらにはこの日のアンコールは1曲では終わらなかった！何と「PILGRIM」からの You Were There をプレイしたのです!。このナンバーがライブ演奏されたのは、クラプトンのキャリア上この日のみです。それだけにこのレアナンバーのライブテイクが最高のサウンドで残されたことを感謝したい気持ちです（但し元々がPAアウトの録音だったため、7:15時点で録音が打ち切られたようで、それ以降は本編に劣らないステレオ・オーディエンス録音で補填しています）。しかもこのナンバーでのクラプトンの素晴らしいソロと言ったら！演奏はマジで凄いです！クラプトンのキャリアにおいて共演数の少ないボニー・レイットの飛入りとレアナンバーのダブルアンコール。さすが痒い所に手が届く重鎮テーパーのマスター、と唸る内容とクオリティ。大注目のタイトルです。
