Nippon Budokan is the venue for the most performances in Bowie’s life. Introducing the finest live album where you can experience the historic night that stood in the “Sacred Place of Japan” for the first time.
Bowie’s first Budokan was “December 11, 1978”. It was his second performance in Japan, which was realized for the first time in five years. I usually start from the 1978 visit to Japan, but this time I’ll change my mind a little and look back on Bowie’s history of Nippon Budokan.
● 1978 (1 performance)
・ December 11: Nippon Budokan ← ★ This work ★
● 1983 (4 performances)
・ October 20: Nippon Budokan
・ October 21 “MOONLIGHT SHADOW (part)”
・ October 22 “THIRD NIGHT AT BUDOKAN”
・ October 24, “DEFINITIVE BUDOKAN 1983 FINAL NIGHT”
● 1996 (2 performances)
・ June 4th + 5th “OUTSIDE OF BUDOKAN 1996”
● 2004 (2 performances)
・ March 8 “BUDOKAN 2004 1ST NIGHT”
・ March 9 “BUDOKAN 2004 2ND NIGHT”
This is all 9 performances of “Bowie at Nippon Budokan”. He has had six Japan tours in his life, of which performances at Nippon Budokan have been realized except in 1973 (first visit to Japan) and 1990 (Tokyo Dome only). It was the 1st place venue with a big difference from the 2nd place “Tokyo / Osaka Welfare Pension Hall (3 times each)”. Aside from the number of performances, there are only symbolic venues in Japan, and many masterpieces are archived at our shop. Except for the first day of 1983, you can experience it with a live album.
Anyway, what is included in this work is the first visit to Nippon Budokan. Known for its long-standing audience recordings, the Masterport label’s masterpiece “BEAUTY”, the Wardor label’s new masterpiece “BUDOKAN 1978”, and the gift record “LIVE AT BUDOKAN 1978” have become popular. This work must also be an audience album, but it is something that sets it apart from those existing groups. Produced by an overseas enthusiast, it is a special version with a matrix of three types of audience recordings.
Of the three sauces, the core is our traditional master “BEAUTY” (by the way, you can now enjoy it as part of “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (Uxbridge 548)”). It seems that the other two species are synchronized there. In fact, the sound is worth the time and effort. Since it is not possible to determine which sound source is the two types other than “BEAUTY”, detailed analysis is not possible, but there is no doubt that the sound that actually flows out is the best. A powerful core pierces the center of the clear air without a sense of distance, yet the sound is glossy and thick enough. Especially amazing is the bass. The attack sound is clear and the feel is extremely glossy. Still, the deep bass isn’t popping out, so the sound isn’t boring and the lines are clear.
The case of bass is just an example, and its vividness can be felt from all instruments. What is particularly surprising is that the details are clear while keeping the thickness, and because the silent part is deep, the outline is vivid and it does not quarrel with other instruments, and it draws a wonderful three-dimensional ensemble. It can be said that this is a proof of a very advanced matrix. Matrix is difficult even for editors, except for bad works that cause sound deviations due to poor editing. It does not mean that it will be improved if any sound source is combined, and if the sound source is not compatible, it will be worse. We will firmly identify the individuality of each sauce and make up for each other’s shortcomings while adjusting so that the compatibility stands out. The secret of such a matrix has been accomplished brilliantly.
The deluxe sound is the only Budokan performance that was realized during the Berlin era. Speaking of coming to Japan in 1978, the TV broadcast pro shot of NHK Hall is also famous, so let’s organize the set while comparing.
● Gram era (8 songs)
・ Ziggy Stardust: Five Years / Soul Love / Star / Hang On to Yourself / Ziggy Stardust / Suffragette City
・ Aladdin Sane: The Jean Genie (★)
● American era (5 songs)
・ Diamond Dogs: Rebel Rebel (★)
・ Young Americans: Fame (★)
・ Station to Station: Station to Station / Stay (★) / TVC 15
● Berlin era (10 songs)
・ Low: Warszawa / What in the World (★) / Be My Wife (★) / Breaking Glass (★) / Art Decade (★)
・ Heroes Dream Story: “Heroes” / Blackout (★) / Sense of Doubt (★) / Beauty and the Beast
・ Others: Alabama Song (★)
* Note: The “★” mark is a song that cannot be heard in the NHK Hall performance pro shot the next day (November 12).
… And it looks like this. The famous TV Pro Shot was a 60-minute digest along the broadcast frame, but this work is a complete full show. Each of the sources used is a full-scale long recording, and the three-kind matrix provides seamless complete recording without any defects.
The content is omitted only for the famous shows that have already been released, but it feels different from the gorgeous sound of the matrix. Although the reality of standing in the actual field such as directivity is not as good as single audience recording, the value of this work is enormous in the sense of “enjoying a historic show with good sound”. Please enjoy this work of the whole mania.
★ Recorded by the best audience of “December 11, 1978: Nippon Budokan”. A matrix master produced by an overseas enthusiast, it is a business that synchronizes two types of recordings centered on the masterport label masterpiece “BEAUTY”. A powerful core pierces the center of the clear air without a sense of distance, yet the sound is glossy and thick enough. We will firmly identify the individuality of each sauce and make up for each other’s shortcomings while adjusting so that the compatibility stands out. It is a masterpiece live album of the whole body of a maniac who has accomplished the secret of such a matrix brilliantly.
