Speaking of Neil’s record in 1989 by Millard, the masterpiece “COSTA MESA 1989: MIKE MILLARD FIRST GENERATION TAPES” surprised maniacs all over the world, but he was Neil until the Greek Theater in LA two days later. This time it turned out that he was chasing.
However, since the same title has already established a solid position as the definitive version of this tour, it was unavoidably released on CD-R this time, but the sound quality is still excellent. On the contrary, the sound is even better because it is the second recording following Costa Mesa. The more I think.
The atmosphere unique to the 1989 tour, which was the first time in Neil’s live career to play the singing stage loudly at the venue, was captured with a splendid sound pressure. This is the face of Millard, and at the same time, the warm texture is also wonderful.
However, this time the mirrored master recorded the moment when he changed the cassette during the encore after the end of “Ohio”, but unfortunately the first encore “Rockin’ In The Free World” started. I missed it.
However, this time, Neil Collector provided us with another sound source on the same day that has not been circulated on the net, making it possible to completely adjust this missing part. Therefore, there is no omission even though it is released on CD-R. If you are a maniac who has already obtained the sound source of this time, you will be surprised by the smooth editing.

It’s typical of Neil, and the set list is different because it’s the next stage after Costa Mesa. At this point, he played “Someday” and “Hangin ‘On A Limb” from “FREEDOM”, which was a masterpiece that announced Neil’s resurrection as a new album that had not been released yet. It is.
Among them, the latter was performed only five times on stage in 1989, and has not been sung since then. On the contrary, Millard captured the extremely valuable scene that this day was the live premiere with the finest sound quality.
In addition, “Four Strong Winds” from the famous album “COMES A TIME” is also performed as a daily repertoire from Costa Mesa. Costa Mesa was also a wonderful content, but the set list of this day is also quite attractive.
And although Neil’s playing and singing, which seems to be the ’89 tour, is the main, the brilliance of the aggressive sound has not faded. A video version of “FREEDOM” and other videos that give a glimpse of the state of the tour were released on the rear tie, but it has been out of print for a long time. Above all, it was far from a complete live recording.
In that respect, this is the best audience album that perfectly reproduces the singing stage of Neil’s ’89 by mirrored recording and supplementing the missing part with another sound source. In addition, a fulfilling set list filled with rare songs and famous songs. This time is also a superb recording!

今週公開されたミラード・マスターは1989年のニール・ヤングでした。ミラードによる89年ニールの記録と言えば名盤「COSTA MESA 1989: MIKE MILLARD FIRST GENERATION TAPES」が世界中のマニアを驚かせたものですが、彼は二日後に行われたLAのグリーク・シアターまでニールを追ってくれていたことが今回判明したのです。
もっとも同タイトルが既に本ツアーの決定版として確固たる地位を築いてしまっていることから、今回はやむをえずCD-Rでのリリースとなってしまうのですが、それでも音質は素晴らしい。それどころかコスタ・メサに続いて二回目の録音ということから、さらに音が良いのでは？と思えるほど。
ニールのライブ・キャリアにおいて初めて弾き語りステージを大音量で会場に鳴らすという試みが導入された89年ツアーならではの雰囲気が見事な音圧で捉えられているのです。これこそミラードの面目躍如であると同時に、それでいてウォーミーな質感も素晴らしい。
ただし今回のミラード・マスターは彼が「Ohio」の終了後、アンコールの合間でカセットの掛け替えを行ったものの、それが運悪くアンコール一発目「Rockin’ In The Free World」が始まった瞬間を録り逃してしまったのです。
しかし今回はニール・コレクターからネット上にも出回っていない同日の別音源を提供いただき、この欠損個所を完全にアジャストすることが可能となりました。よってCD-Rでのリリースながら抜かりはありません。既に今回の音源を入手されておられるマニアなら、そのなめらかな編集に驚かされることかと。

そこはニールらしく、コスタ・メサの次のステージということからセットリストに違いがみられる。この時点ではまだリリースされていなかったニューアルバムにしてニールの復活ぶりを高らかに告げる傑作となった「FREEDOM」から「Someday」と「Hangin’ On A Limb」をこの日は演奏してくれているのです。
中でも後者は89年に5回ステージで演奏されただけで、それ以降は現在に至るまで歌われないまま。それどころか、何とこの日がライブ初演という極めて貴重な場面をミラードが極上の音質にて捉えてくれたのでした。
さらにコスタ・メサからの日替わりレパートリーとしてこれまた名盤「COMES A TIME」から「Four Strong Winds」も演奏してくれている。コスタ・メサも素晴らしい内容でしたが、この日のセットリストも相当に魅力的。
そして89年ツアーらしいニールの弾き語りメインながらもアグレッシブなサウンドの輝きは今も色褪せていない。リアタイではビデオ版「FREEDOM」などツアーの様子を垣間見られる映像がリリースされていましたが、それも廃盤となって久しい。何よりライブの完全収録から程遠かった。
その点こちらはミラード録音、なおかつ欠損部を別音源にて補填してみせたことでニール89年の弾き語りステージを完全に再現する最高のオーディエンス・アルバムとなりました。おまけにレア曲や名曲の詰まった充実のセットリスト。今回もまた絶品録音です！
