大人気ラジオ番組「ヤング・ジョッキー」シリーズの“プログレ人気投票ベスト20”がギフト・タイトルで復活です。本作は、ラジオ番組の特番で、“プログレ”をテーマにリスナーからの人気投票を発表しながら曲をかけていくもの。ディスク１が「1978年６月３日放送」で、第20位から第10位まで、ディスク２は翌日「６月４日放送」で第９位から第１位までを発表していきます。当時、この番組をエアチェックしていたコアマニアが大切に保管していたマスターを使用しており、まるで昨日録られたような鮮度がバツグン。この手の音源が公式化するわけがありませんが、クオリティ的にはオフィシャルにも使用できるほどのFM音源です。

再生してまず耳に飛び込むのは、時報。ここからもうタイムスリップ感満点です。こういったラジオ・アルバムの面白さは、時代感覚がムキ出しのコメントと選曲。特に本作は、DJの嗜好は関係なしのリスナー投票ですから“1978年の日本の空気”が鮮烈で、まさに時間旅行の醍醐味に溢れているのです。そのベスト20は下の曲目リストをご覧の通り、まさにプログレ黄金期の名曲がズラリ。しかし、それ以上に時代感覚が吹き出すのは、ちょっとズレた曲の方。錚々たるプログレバンドの中に、第18位のTHE BEATLESや第14位のLED ZEPPELIN、第16位のBRIAN ENO、第８位のDAVID BOWIEといったミュージシャンが顔を出すのです。第６位のQUEENでは、DJも「このグループをプログレッシヴ・ロックだ！と断じて投票してくる人はなかなかだと思いますけど」と苦笑していますが、まさにこれこそが時代感覚。“プログレかくあるべし！”というリスナーの他にも、ジャンルに厳密にこだわらず、「好きなものは好き」気分で聴く一般にまでプログレが広く浸透していた時代の空気なのです。

さらに“ハガキ職人”全盛期の空気感が透けるのが、第11位のU.K.紹介。20曲を放送枠ギチギチで紹介するため、ネタ紹介の面白さはありませんが、自分のお気に入りバンドを上位に入れるための組織票の話が飛び出す。番組スタッフと職人たちがハガキを通して互いの思惑を読みあい、攻防を繰り広げるエピソードが最高に可笑しいのです。
