THE MOODY BLUES was in the midst of their glory in 1986 when their song “THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE” reached number 9 in the US. A special edition of the iconic soundboard is now available.
What is recorded in this work is “July 8, 1986 Cuyahoga Falls performance”. This is a stereo soundboard recording. If you are an avid collector, you probably know this, but this day’s live performance was also included in the official box “THE POLYDOR YEARS 1986-1992”. This work is a copy of such an official box. . . Well, no. This is the version that was broadcast on WESTWOOD ONE’s famous program “Superstars In Concert”, and it is an FM broadcast version with different recorded content from the official one.
Before we look at the quality, first of all is the position of the show. Let’s take a look at the overview of activities at that time.

This is THE MOODY BLUES in 1986/1987. Although I have visited my home country of England and Australia a little, I have mostly traveled to North America. It is clear at a glance who they were playing music for as they turned into pop hit makers. In such a situation, the Cuyahoga Falls performance of this work is at the beginning of the start dash. This was the 17th concert of “North America #1”.
As mentioned above, this show was made official, but it was only in 2014. Rather, it was a show known for being broadcast on FM. This work is such an FM broadcast version, a new excavation master that was recently released. What we discovered was the prestigious company “Krw_co”, and it is a masterpiece that was directly digitized from the reel master at the time. Although it’s not quite as good as the official version in terms of sound quality, the suffocating sense of the times is amazing. From the beginning, a DJ that is not official appears, and the main part of the live performance is full of mood with sounds that are typical of FM broadcasts.
What is more important than anything else is the content of the show itself. The song selection itself is different from the official version, and this work is also longer. Let’s organize the set while comparing it with the official version.

…and it looks like this. There is no official recording of “It May Be A Fire”, but “The Other Side Of Life” is included instead. The core of the show is two big hits from the 1980s. However, it didn’t end there; they also performed a group of famous songs from the progressive rock era, concentrating their essence. They have a dark side and dramaticism that makes them more than just a pop band. It also has a sense of balance reminiscent of YES and GENESIS, which also survived the 80’s with their pop style.
THE MOODY BLUES created an era in the 80’s with Patrick Moraz. “THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE” was also their last platinum album. An FM album where you can enjoy a full show with plenty of pop hits. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

There are plenty of pop numbers like “LONG DISTANCE VOYAGER” and “THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE,” and you can also enjoy “The Other Side Of Life,” which is not in the official version.

『THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE』を全米９位に送り込み、栄光の真っ直中にいた1986年のTHE MOODY BLUES。その象徴となるサウンドボードの特別版が登場です。
そんな本作に記録されているのは「1986年７月８日カヤホガ・フォールズ公演」。そのステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。熱心なコレクター諸兄ならピンと来ていると思いますが、この日は公式ボックス『THE POLYDOR YEARS 1986-1992』にも収録されたライヴ。本作はそんな公式ボックスのコピー。。。では、ありません。WESTWOOD ONEの名物番組“Superstars In Concert”で放送されたバージョンで、公式とは収録内容も異なるFM放送版なのです。
その気になるクオリティの前に、まずはショウのポジション。当時の活動概要を俯瞰してみましょう。

これが1986年／1987年のTHE MOODY BLUES。母国イギリスやオーストラリアもわずかに回っているものの、ほぼほぼ北米。ポップなヒットメイカーに転身した彼らが誰のために音楽を奏でていたのか、一目瞭然の活動状況です。そんな中で本作のカヤホガ・フォールズ公演はスタート・ダッシュの序盤。「北米#1」の17公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
前述のように、このショウは公式化も実現しているわけですが、それは2014年になってからのこと。むしろ、FM放送されたことで知られるショウでした。本作はそんなFM放送版で、最近公開されたばかりの新発掘マスター。発掘したのは名門「Krw_co」で、当時のリール・マスターからダイレクトにデジタル化された銘品なのです。音質面ではオフィシャル版に一歩及ばないものの、むせ返る時代感がスゴい。冒頭からオフィシャルにないDJが飛び出しますし、ライヴ本編もいかにもFM放送らしいサウンドがムード満点なのです。
それより何より重要なのは、ショウの収録内容そのもの。オフィシャル盤とは選曲自体が異なっており、本作の方が長尺でもあるのです。ここで公式版と比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。オフィシャル収録の「It May Be A Fire」がありませんが、代わりに「The Other Side Of Life」が収録されています。ショウの軸となっているのは80年代の２大ヒット作。ただしそれだけでは終わらず、プログレ時代の名曲群もエッセンスを濃縮して披露。ただのポップバンドではない陰りとドラマティシズムも醸している。同じくポップ化して80年代を生き抜いていたYESやGENESISを思わせるバランス感覚でもあります。
パトリック・モラーツと共に80年代に一時代を築いたTHE MOODY BLUES。『THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE』は、そんな彼らの最後のプラチナ・アルバムでもありました。ポップなヒット曲もたっぷりな全盛のショウを楽しめるFMアルバム。どうぞ、存分にご堪能ください。
