This is VAN HALEN in 1979. “TUCSON 1979” was also a North American tour, but the legs are different, and this work is in the middle of “WORLD VACATION Tour”. It was the second concert of “North America # 2”, which was just returned from Europe.
By the way, this work excavated from such a show is just a shocking transcendental sound board. Compared to “TUCSON 1979” because it’s the same North America … it’s very similar. Of course, we call “West Palm Beach !!” at the opening, and the performance and mix are completely different. However, you can fully enjoy the tremendous sense of direct connection with the core, the vibration level details of the guitar strings and drum skins, and the bread that flies to the left and right to the rough.
If you force the difference from “TUCSON 1979”, this work is clearer. If you’ve experienced that super-famous board, you might think “What’s cloudy in TUCSON 1979 !?”, but this is true. When I listened to it again, “TUCSON 1979” was recorded with the feeling that the sound pressure was barely peaking and “If you raise it any more, it will be clogged”, but this work is a full-scale hitting peak or a whole fortissimo. There is a sense of leeway, and as a result, the nuances that are smooth from beginning to end do not collapse. The three-dimensional effect of the ensemble is deeper, and the growth of the notes is even more beautiful. Of course, both “TUCSON 1979” and this work are transcendental classes with no questions asked, but if you are asked “Which is the throne?”, You can’t help but mention this work. It is such a top update sound board album.
What’s more, this work also carries out “one effort” to raise the highest peak of such a shock sound board. As a matter of fact, the original sound released on the net was severely out of pitch, but I adjusted it thoroughly. It was arranged normally and faithfully reproduced the sound output at the site.

《12月『暗黒の掟』制作開始》
これが1979年のVAN HALEN。『TUCSON 1979』も北米ツアーでしたがレッグが異なり、本作は“WORLD VACATION Tour”中盤。欧州から帰国したばかりとなる「北米#2」２公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
さて、そんなショウから発掘された本作は、まさに衝撃の超絶級サウンドボード。同じ北米という事で『TUCSON 1979』と比較しますと……酷似。もちろん、オープニングで「ウェストパームビーチ!!」とコールしますし、演奏もミックスもまったくの別物。しかし、ムキ出しになった芯やギター弦やドラムの皮の振動レベルなディテール、荒々しいまでに左右へ飛ぶパン等々、凄まじいまでの卓直結感は本作でもたっぷり味わえるのです。
強いて『TUCSON 1979』との違いを挙げるなら、本作の方がクリア。あの超名盤を体験された方なら「TUCSON 1979のどこが曇ってると言うんだ!?」と思われるでしょうが、これが本当。聴き直してみると『TUCSON 1979』は音圧がギリギリでピークに「これ以上上げたら詰まるぞ」という感じで録音されていたのですが、本作は全力の打音ピークでも全員一丸のフォルテッシモでも余裕が感じられ、その結果、終始伸びやかなニュアンスが崩れない。アンサンブルの立体感はより深く、ノートの伸びは一層美しいのです。もちろん、『TUCSON 1979』も本作も問答無用の超絶クラスではあるものの、「王座はどっち？」と訊かれたら本作を挙げないわけにはいかない。そんな頂点更新サウンドボード・アルバムなのです。
しかも、本作はそんな衝撃サウンドボードの最高峰を引き上げる「ひと手間」も実施。実のところ、ネット公開された原音は激しくピッチが狂っていたのですが、そこは徹底的に調整。ビシッと正常に整え、現場の出音を忠実に再現しました。
そんな衝撃サウンドで描かれるのは、初期ならではの勢いとフルセットのスケールを併せ持った90分。セットリストは“WORLD VACATION Tour”の標準的なものですが、今後の入門向けにもなりますので念のため再掲しておきましょう。

ここまででお腹いっぱいですが、本作はさらに美味しいボーナスも収録。ツアーのためのリハーサルから「Dance The Night Away」「Beautiful Girls」を追加収録しているのです。リハーサル音源は以前から知られていますが、本作はライヴ本編とセットで発掘されたマスター。本作では本編ライヴ・サウンドボードと続けて聴きやすいようにバランス調整しつつ、そのまま収録致しました。
