Dropped from the Island label, ULTRAVOX in 1979 was on the verge of the end of the John Fox era. A sound board album that allows you to enjoy the historical turning point is now available.
This work contains two performances. It is a set of two sets of stereo sound board recordings of “Philadelphia performance on February 23, 1979” and “Boston performance on March 3”. Speaking of Fox’s late soundboard album, “BUFFALO 1979 (Uxbridge 1603)”, which was very well received at our shop, is also new to memory. First of all, let’s look back on the schedule at the time, which also serves as a collection arrangement.

This is the 1979 ULTRAVOX (there are some ambiguous points, such as the fact that the situation of two performances per day differs depending on the document. Please do not trust the details such as the number of performances, please refer to it as an approximate flow). When they released “SYSTEMS OF ROMANCE” in September 1978, they recorded the highest sales ever, but they couldn’t meet the demands of the Island label and were fired at the end of the year. At the beginning of the new year, they carried out a mini tour (about 10 performances) in the United States at their own expense. “BUFFALO 1979” was in the middle of the mini tour, but the two performances of this work were the shows just before that.
These two precious performances were recorded on the radio, and the Philadelphia performance (DISC 1) was broadcast on FM on “WIOQ-FM” and the Boston performance (DISC 2) on “BBC Rock Hour”. This work is the one that coupled the FM sound board with the best master. Its quality is superb. Both are masters that have been released online recently, but I can’t feel any dubbing marks or deterioration over time. Not only is there no twist or distortion, but there is almost no hiss or noise that is common in 70’s tapes. The Philadelphia performance (DISC 1) is a local station with a rough mix directly connected to the desk, and the Boston performance (DISC 2) is a BBC-like high-quality mix. It is a class name product sound.
The FM soundboard depicts two performances summarizing the Fox era. The sets of both days are close but not exactly the same. Let’s put it all together here.

… and it looks like this. The recording time for both performances is less than “BUFFALO 1979”, and there is no super rare song “Radio Beach”, but everything else is covered. You can also enjoy the ULTRAVOX versions of “Touch And Go (Mr. X)” and “He’s A Liquid” that will be included in John’s “METAMATIC” with official-class superb sounds.
“BUFFALO 1979” is also hard to throw away because of its extremely rare songs, but this work wins out in terms of sound quality. A two-disc FM soundboard album that will serve as an “official alternative” at the end of the Fox era. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

Islandレーベルからドロップし、ジョン・フォックス時代の終焉間際にあった1979年のULTRAVOX。その歴史的一大ターニング・ポイントを楽しめるサウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
そんな本作に収められているのは２公演。「1979年２月23日フィラデルフィア公演」と「３月３日ボストン公演」のステレオ・サウンドボード録音をセットした２枚組です。フォックス末期のサウンドボード・アルバムと言えば、当店では大好評を賜った『BUFFALO 1979（Uxbridge 1603）』も記憶に新しいところ。まずは、コレクション整理も兼ねて当時のスケジュールから振り返ってみましょう。

これが1979年のULTRAVOX（資料によって１日２公演の状況が食い違っている等、あやふやな点もある。公演数などの細部は信用せず、あくまでもおおよその流れとしてご参照ください）。前1978年９月に『SYSTEMS OF ROMANCE』をリリースしたら彼らは過去最高の売り上げを記録するものの、Islandレーベルの要求には届かず年末に解雇。年明けには、アメリカで自腹のミニ・ツアー（約10公演）を実施しました。『BUFFALO 1979』はミニツアーでも中盤だったわけですが、本作の２公演はその直前にあたるショウでした。
そんな貴重な２公演はラジオ収録され、フィラデルフィア公演（DISC 1）は“WIOQ-FM”、ボストン公演（DISC 2）は“BBC Rock Hour”でFM放送。本作はそのFMサウンドボードをベスト・マスターでカップリングしたものなのです。そのクオリティは極上。どちらも最近になってネット公開されたマスターなのですが、ダビング痕も経年劣化もまるで感じられない。ヨレや歪みが見当たらないだけでなく、70年代テープにありがちなヒス・ノイズもまったくと言って良いほどないのです。フィラデルフィア公演（DISC 1）は地元局だけあって卓直結のラフなミックス、ボストン公演（DISC 2）はBBCらしく完成度の高いミックス……と個性は異なるものの、どちらもステレオ感も絶大な極上級の銘品サウンドです。
そんなFMサウンドボードで描かれるのは、フォックス時代を総括する２公演。両日のセットは近いながらもまったく同じというわけでもない。ここでまとめて整理しておきましょう。

激レア曲があるために『BUFFALO 1979』も捨てがたいところですが、サウンド・クオリティでは本作に軍配が上がります。フォックス時代末期の「オフィシャル代わり」を務めてくれる２枚組のFMサウンドボード・アルバム。どうぞ、心ゆくまで存分にお楽しみください。
