In 1996, Sting embarked on the largest world tour in his career, sending the ambitious work “MERCURY FALLING”, which stepped into contemporary music, to fifth place in the United States. The masterpiece sound board album is here.
This work was recorded on “September 8, 1996 in Houston”. It is the stereo sound board recording. Speaking of Sting, he is a workaholic who always performs a huge number of live performances, but the only tours that have exceeded 200 performances in his solo career are “MERCURY FALLING Tour 1996-1997” and “BRAND NEW DAY Tour 1999-2001”. It was truly the biggest project of my life. First, let’s look back at the whole view and check the position of the show.

《July 21: Broadcast of “Superstar Concert”》

This is the 1996/1997 Sting. The Houston performance of this work is the last day of “North America # 1”, which is just half a year since the album was released. The “MERCURY FALLING Tour” also realized a performance in Japan, but this work was also a concert just before that.
This show was also known to have been broadcast on FM, and its air check was a big staple that has produced a number of existing groups. Although this work is also the broadcasting sound board, it updates the highest quality. As a matter of fact, this FM sound board is also available in a two-disc long version, but this work is different from that. It is a product that was raised from the pre-broadcast master of WESTWOOD ONE’s famous program “Superstar Concert”.
In fact, the quality is the highest ever. The long master was distorted after mp3 compression, but this time the pre-FM master is not only not via broadcast waves, but also a complete lossless master. There are no dubbing marks or compression marks, and the glossiness without distortion to the end of the extended note is wonderful. Even though it has not been digitally remastered, the outline is sharp and clear, and it is completely different from the conventional round and degraded sound.
A show that will make you enjoy a huge tour is depicted with such a superb sound. As mentioned above, this work is a pre-FM master of “Superstar Concert” and it is not a full recording, but even so, there are a lot of famous songs in the about 75-minute broadcast frame. Speaking of the soundboard of the “MERCURY FALLING Tour”, the masterpiece “ROCK AM RING 1996 (Uxbridge 1244)” is also familiar at our shop. Let’s organize the sets while comparing them here.

… and it looks like this. Although “ROCK AM RING 1996” was somewhat unsatisfactory, you can understand that you can enjoy a wide range of famous songs, mainly new songs of “MERCURY FALLING”. By the way, 5 songs “I Was Brought To My Senses”, “Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot”, “Seven Days”, “I’m So Happy That I Can’t Stop Crying” and “Fragile” were removed from the broadcast.
The cut is disappointing, but even if you put that aside, you can’t help but introduce the superb sound. A soundboard album that impresses with the real and natural beauty of the ultimate Gene’s pre-FM master. Please enjoy it to the fullest.

★ Superb stereo sound board recording of “Houston performance on September 8, 1996”. This is the highest quality version created from the pre-FM master of the famous program “Superstar Concert”, and the sound is overwhelmingly different from the conventional master with compression marks. It is a quasi-official masterpiece where you can enjoy plenty of shows with the unique “MERCURY FALLING” number, which is wonderfully glossy without distortion to the end of the extending note.

コンテンポラリー・ミュージックに踏み込んだ意欲作『MERCURY FALLING』を全米５位に送り込み、キャリア最大級のワールド・ツアーに乗り出した1996年のスティング。その傑作サウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
そんな本作が記録されたのは「1996年９月８日ヒューストン公演」。そのステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。スティングと言えば常に膨大なライヴをこなしているワーカホリックですが、そのソロ・キャリアでも200公演を超えたツアーは“MERCURY FALLING Tour 1996-1997”と“BRAND NEW DAY Tour 1999-2001”だけ。まさに生涯屈指の巨大プロジェクトでした。まずは、その全景を振り返ってショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが1996年／1997年のスティング。本作のヒューストン公演は、アルバム発売からちょうど半年となる「北米#1」の最終日。“MERCURY FALLING Tour”では来日公演も実現したわけですが、本作はその直前となるコンサートでもありました。
このショウはFM放送された事でも知られ、そのエアチェックが数々の既発群を生み出して来た大定番でした。本作もその放送サウンドボードではあるのですが、その最高峰クオリティを更新するもの。実のところ、このFMサウンドボードは２枚組の長尺バージョンも出回っているのですが、本作はそれとは別物。WESTWOOD ONEの名物番組“Superstar Concert”の放送前マスターから起こされた銘品なのです。
実際、そのクオリティは過去最高。長尺マスターはmp3圧縮を経た歪みが発生していましたが、今回のプレFMマスターは放送電波を介していないだけではなく、完全なロスレス・マスター。ダビング痕も圧縮痕もなく、伸びるノートの端の端まで歪みのない艶やかさが素晴らしい。デジタル・リマスターもしていないのに輪郭もくっきりと鮮明で、従来の丸くシュワシュワと劣化したサウンドとは完全に別物なのです。
そんな極上サウンドで描かれるのは、巨大ツアーを満喫するようなショウ。前述のように、本作はあくまで“Superstar Concert”のプレFMマスターであってフル収録ではないのですが、それでも約75分の放送枠に名曲がギッシリ。“MERCURY FALLING Tour”のサウンドボードと言えば、当店では傑作『ROCK AM RING 1996（Uxbridge 1244）』もお馴染み。ここでは比較しながらセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。『ROCK AM RING 1996』がやや物足りなかったせいもありますが、『MERCURY FALLING』の新曲をメインに幅広い名曲をたっぷり楽しめるのがご理解いただけるでしょう。ちなみに、放送から外されたのは５曲「I Was Brought To My Senses」「Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot」「Seven Days」「I’m So Happy That I Can’t Stop Crying」「Fragile」です。
返す返すもカットは残念ではありますが、それを差し置いてもご紹介せずにはいられない極上のサウンドが素晴らしい。究極ジェネのプレFMマスターだからこそのリアルでナチュラルな美音が胸に染みるサウンドボード・アルバム。どうぞ、存分に味わい尽くしてください。
