Randy left a huge footprint in rock history due to his encounter with Ozzy Osbourne. However, the band that was in his mind was QUIET RIOT, not Ozzy. In the first place, QUIET RIOT is a band formed by Randy himself. It was a local band in Los Angeles that teamed up with Kevin DuBrow, Kelly Garni and Drew Forsyth in 1973. When it was first formed, it was called “MARCH 1”, and it wasn’t until 1975 that it was renamed from “LITTLE WOMEN” to “QUIET RIOT”. It is very popular locally and has appeared in the famous “Starwood Club” as the root of VAN HALEN before its debut, and there is an episode that more than 1500 people rushed in despite the capacity of 600 people. I will.
However, no matter how popular the locals are, the late 70’s was an era of hard rock suffering. VAN HALEN had a hard time contracting, and so did QUIET RIOT. Under such circumstances, Japanese CBS / Sony, who paid attention to their idol-like looks, consulted the contract. The debut album “New Riot” will be released only in Japan. It was recorded in June-August 1977, with producers Derek Lawrence & Warren Entner, who worked on WISHBONE ASH and NGEL. It was about the same time as the rival VAN HALEN’s “Van Halen”.
However, unfortunately, “New Riot” was not released outside Japan and was soon discontinued. After that, Randy and Carlos Cavazo who teamed up with Ozzy and QUIET RIOT who restarted each made a break, but some songs of “New Riot” became a phantom to the extent that they could be heard on the compilation board “THE RANDY RHOADS YEARS”. It was. This work is not an LP wakeup at that time, but a detailed reproduction from a promotional CD produced by epic.
Well, such a “new riot”, but the content is extremely innocent. Although it is a straight American HR different from Ozzy, it is not as heavy as the later “Metal Health”. Randy’s guitar stands out, but it doesn’t have a classical beauty. Although I have some ideas such as arranging “Get Your Kicks” with the motif of “Yankee Doodle”, I have not yet reached the stage where individuality is established. Rather, the cover sense seems to have sprung up after “Metal Health”, such as taking up “Tin Soldier” of SMALL FACES and “Glad All Over” of DAVE CLARK FIVE. According to Randy, QUIET RIOT at that time was aiming for “a fusion of QUEEN’s splendid dramaticism + DEEP PURPLE’s heavy netas.” If you ask me, I don’t think I’m facing that direction … but it seems that my ability isn’t catching up.

It was just the starting point. It is an innocent debut work that shows Randy struggling to shed herself from the “local hero”. Not only “It’s Not So Funny”, “Look in Any Window” and “Mama’s Little Angels (Last Call for Rock’n’ Roll)” that you heard in “THE RANDY RHOADS YEARS”, but also the original version that you can fully enjoy all 12 songs. オジー・オズボーンとの出逢いによってロック史に巨大な足跡を残す事になったランディ。しかし、彼の心にあったバンドはオジーではなく、QUIET RIOTだったそうです。そもそもQUIET RIOTは、ランディ自身が結成したバンド。1973年にケヴィン・ダブロウやケリー・ガルニ、ドリュー・フォーサイスと組んだロサンゼルスのローカル・バンドでした。結成当初は“MARCH 1”と名乗っており、その後“LITTLE WOMEN”→“QUIET RIOT”と改名したのは1975年になってからでした。地元では非常に人気が高く、デビュー前VAN HALENの根城としても有名な“スターウッド・クラブ”にも出演しており、定員600名にも関わらず1500人以上が押しかけたというエピソードも残されています。
しかし、いかに地元人気があっても70年代後期はハードロック受難の時代。VAN HALENも契約に苦労していましたが、それはQUIET RIOTも同じでした。そんな中で彼らのアイドル的なルックスに注目した日本のCBS／ソニーが契約を打診。日本限定でデビューアルバム『新たなる暴動』がリリースされる運びとなりました。レコーディングされたのは1977年６月-８月で、プロデューサーにはWISHBONE ASHやNGELを手掛けたデレク・ローレンス＆ウォーレン・エントナーを起用。ライバルだったVAN HALENの『炎の導火線』とほぼ同時期のことでした。
しかし、残念ながら『新たなる暴動』は日本以外での発売には至らず、すぐに廃盤。その後、オジーと組んだランディとカルロス・カヴァーゾと再始動したQUIET RIOTがそれぞれブレイクしたわけですが、『新たなる暴動』は何曲かがコンピレーション盤『THE RANDY RHOADS YEARS』で聴ける程度で幻となった。本作は、そんな当時のLP起こし……ではなく、epic制作のプロモCDから精緻に復刻されたものなのです。
さて、そんな『新たなる暴動』ですが、その内容は極めて初々しい。オジーとは異なるストレートなアメリカンHRではあるものの、後の『メタル・ヘルス』ほどヘヴィでもない。ランディのギターはしっかりと目立っているのですが、そこにはクラシカルな美旋律はない。「Yankee Doodle（アルプス一万尺）」をモチーフにした「Get Your Kicks」のアレンジなどアイディアは感じるものの、まだまだ個性が確立する段階にまで至っていない。むしろ、SMALL FACESの「Tin Soldier」やDAVE CLARK FIVEの「Glad All Over」を取り上げるなど、カバーセンスに『メタル・ヘルス』以降の萌芽が感じられる。ランディによると、当時のQUIET RIOTは「QUEENの華麗なドラマティシズム＋DEEP PURPLEのヘヴィネタスの融合」を目指していたそう。言われれば、なるほどそっちを向いているのかも……という気がしなくもないのですが、やはり実力が追いついていないようです。

まさに出発点。「地元のヒーロー」から脱皮しようともがくランディの姿が透けるような初々しいデビュー作です。『THE RANDY RHOADS YEARS』でも聴けた「It’s Not So Funny」「Look in Any Window」「Mama’s Little Angels（Last Call for Rock ‘n’ Roll）」だけでなく、全12曲をたっぷりと楽しめるオリジナル盤。どうぞ、この機会にじっくりとご堪能ください。
