The official sound board collection including the full 2 performances of the “RUST IN PEACE” and “COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION” era is born! Introducing a press 3CD that permanently preserves all live takes from the golden quartet “Mustaine / Ellefson / Friedman / Menza” era !!
MEGADETH, a famous band that makes a huge footprint in the history of metal. Speaking of that golden age, it would be stabbed in the 90’s when both Marty Friedman and Nick Menza were together. Despite being such a most important era, they didn’t release a historic live album. But even though it wasn’t released at the time, it doesn’t mean it didn’t exist. He left behind two full-live albums that would have been a huge hit all over the world as a super-masterpiece if they had been released regularly. This work is a big set that completely covers the official sound board live by “that four people” including those two. It is a 3-disc set that is a precise reproduction of the “treasure of heavy metal” that is now all out of print.
The point is that this work is not just a collection of official tracks, but is structured so that each disc can be enjoyed as a musical work. Let’s introduce them individually.
For collectors, “1990 Wembley” will have a special feeling. Not only did the FM broadcast soundboard boot become a staple, but a number of official singles and compilations included shredded takes. I think there are many people who carefully check each one and collect them. The official box “WARCHEST” released 15 years ago was the perfect and definitive edition of such a super famous sound board. DISC 1 of this work is a precise reproduction of the full live album that was also the centerpiece.
The quality is of course “completely official grade”, but the content is too intense! It’s goosebumps just by thinking of the full sound board of that great masterpiece “RUST IN PEACE” era, but when you actually listen to it, it goes far beyond your imagination. Rare songs like “Take No Prisoners” are delicious, but more than that, the 80’s slash numbers are in full swing! It’s dizzy just to start at “Rattlehead” which will be sealed for more than 15 years, and “Devil’s Island” by these four people is also valuable. “The Skull Beneath The Skin” and “Good Mourning / Black Friday” are rare songs that haven’t been played since this tour. And Todome is “It’s Electric”! It is a cover of DIAMOND HEAD which is familiar in METALLICA, but they played this song later and earlier, this one time. Moreover, he co-starred with Sean Harris, the head family. It’s one of the best songs with multiple layers of preciousness.
The performance itself is more than such a set. By getting Marty & Nick, my playing ability has improved dramatically, but at this time, I still have a slash-like explosive feeling. The real thrill of skipping complicated songs while maintaining a sense of consistency is comparable to METALLICA’s “DAMAGED JUSTICE Tour”. Regardless of whether it is official or informal, there is no doubt that it is the strongest live album of all MEGADETH records without any questions! [DISC 2: COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION era full live album +1] After the ultimate live album, which will be the best of all careers, no matter what you listen to, it will not be a slapstick … so this work is amazing! The following DISC 2 is a full live album of “December 4, 1992 Cow Palace Performance” which was the second place in the United States.
This live is also familiar to collectors. Along with Wembley in 1990, it is a big classic with shredded takes scattered on the single B side, promo board, various bonus tracks, etc. This is also the same as Wembley SBD, and the complete and definitive edition is released as a bonus disc of the “COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION” deluxe edition 10 years ago. This disc is a precise reproduction of the discontinued work.
This is also wonderful. “COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION” itself is a historical masterpiece drawn with a fiercely tight ensemble with an eye on the middle tempo and melody, but the world is beautifully reproduced on the stage.
Instead of a sharp decrease in slash songs, a sharp increase in the number of representative songs that are becoming standard songs. The masterpiece “Tornado Of Souls” that could not be heard on Disc 1 is also shown. Moreover, the numbers unique to those days such as “Countdown To Extinction”, “Foreclosure Of A Dream” and “This Was My Life” are effective as accents. And play. The ensemble, which turned from the “RUST IN PEACE Tour” to the highest priority on consistency, has a full-blown metallic appeal without exploding. Whether it’s a set or a playing style, you can see that the template after that was completed here.
Although such a full live alone is the best, one song “Hight Speed Dirt” from “May 23, 1992 Alpine Valley Performance” is additionally recorded at the end of DISC 2. It was recorded here because it couldn’t fit in DISC 3, which will be described later, but it is also meaningful that this song was selected. “Hight Speed Dirt” is not played in the main cow palace performance, and even if you listen to this disc alone, it is a bonus track with no double songs. [DISC 3: YOUTHANASIA / CRYPTIC WRITINGS era official live collection] DISC 1-2 was a single full live album, but there are many other official live takes. DISC 3 is a compilation disc that is a complete set of such shredded takes. However, even though there are many, if you organize by live, the original is 3 performances. In this work, it is recorded in chronological order. In the official version, the volume / sound pressure of each take was different for each item, but in this work it is unified so that it can be heard as one live work.
● May 23, 1992 Alpine Valley performance (2 songs)
A total of 3 songs have been released for the Alpine Valley performance sound board, and they were distributed and recorded in each country’s edition of the single “SKIN O’MY TEETH”. “Hight Speed Dirt” was the last of DISC 2, but the remaining two songs “Skin O’My Teeth” and “Lucretia” were recorded on DISC 3. By the way, the official DVD “ARSENAL OF MEGADETH” contains live PV of “Skin O’My Teeth” and “Hight Speed Dirt”, and the sound is also this Alpine Valley performance sound board.
● February 25, 1995 Los Angeles performance (5 songs)
Five songs from the Los Angeles performance have been released from “YOUTHANASIA Tour”. “Tornado Of Souls” and “A Tout Le Monde” were also heard on the original official EP “LIVE TRAX”, but the remaining three songs “Skin O’My Teeth” “Holy Wars … The Punishment Due” “Symphony Of Destruction” Is a rare track only for the promo CD limited to the fan club “CYBER ARMY”. Of course, in this work, we have recorded everything and finished it so that you can enjoy it with a unified sound.
● June 13, 1997 Mesa performance (10 songs)
The last 10 songs from “CRYPTIC WRITINGS Tour” which was also the main of the official EP “LIVE TRAX” & “LIVE TRAX II”. The secret “Peace Deals” has also been divided into tracks, and the song order has been rearranged according to the live performance. Speaking of “CRYPTIC WRITINGS Tour”, the highest peak full sound board “DEFINITIVE BUENOS AIRES 1995 + 1997 (Zodiac 222)” is familiar, but “Use The Man” is a delicious song that can not be heard there either.
The above is an official live collection of 49 songs / 3 hours and 45 minutes. Whether it was Wembley (DISC 1) in 1990 or Cow Palace (DISC 2) in 1992, it would have been a historic masterpiece if it had been released as a single unit. Despite this, the official is a bonus for limited edition products, and it has been out of print for a long time without being widely known. This work is a 3-disc set that completely covers the shredded live tracks left by the “Golden 4 People” while setting the two major sound boards as the main.
That is an absolute work with the same value as the studio masterpieces “RUST IN PEACE”, “COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION”, “YOUTHANASIA”, and “CRYPTIC WRITINGS”. Please collect it with Permanent Preservation Press 3CD!

メタル史に巨大な足跡を刻む名バンドMEGADETH。その黄金時代と言ったらマーティ・フリードマン／ニック・メンザの両雄が揃っていた90年代にトドメを刺すでしょう。それほどの最重要時代でありながら、彼らは歴史に残るような名盤ライヴアルバムを出してくれませんでした。しかし当時リリースされなかったとは言え、存在しなかったわけではありません。レギュラー・リリースされていれば超々名盤として世界中で大ヒットしたに違いないフル・ライヴアルバムを、それも２本も残していたのです。本作はその２本も含め、“あの４人”による公式サウンドボード・ライヴを完全網羅したビッグ・セット。今やすべて廃盤状態となっている「ヘヴィメタルの至宝」を精緻に復刻した３枚組なのです。
本作は単なる公式トラック集ではなく、ディスク１枚ずつが音楽作品として楽しめるように構成されているのもポイント。さっそく個別にご紹介していきましょう。
【DISC 1：RUST IN PEACE時代のフル・ライヴアルバム】
まず登場するのは、本作最大の目玉にしてMEGADETHライヴ・アイテムの最高傑作。「1990年10月14日ウェンブリー・アリーナ公演」のフル・ライヴアルバムです！
コレクター諸兄にとって「1990年ウェンブリー」は特別な感慨があることでしょう。FM放送のサウンドボード・ブートが大定番となっただけでなく、数々の公式シングルやコンピレーションに細切れテイクが収録された。その１つひとつを注意深くチェックしては集めていた方も多いのではないでしょうか。そんな超有名サウンドボードの完全＆決定盤が登場したのは15年前にリリースされた公式ボックス『WARCHEST』。本作のDISC 1は、その目玉でもあったフル・ライヴアルバムを精緻に復刻したのです。
クオリティは当然「完全オフィシャル級」なわけですが、その内容が強烈すぎる！ あの大名盤『RUST IN PEACE』時代のフル・サウンドボードなんて考えただけで鳥肌モノですが、実際に聴くと想像を遙かに超えてくる。「Take No Prisoners」のような貴重曲も美味しいですが、それ以上なのが80年代スラッシュ・ナンバーがてんこ盛り！ 15年以上封印されることになる「Rattlehead」で開演するだけでも目眩がしますし、この４人による「Devils Island」も貴重。「The Skull Beneath The Skin」「Good Mourning/Black Friday」に至っては、このツアー以降は演奏していないレア曲なのです。そしてトドメは「It’s Electric」！ METALLICAでもお馴染みのDIAMOND HEADのカバーですが、彼らがこの曲を演奏したのは後にも先にも、この１回こっきり。しかも、本家のシーン・ハリスとの共演。貴重度が幾重にも重なり合った極めつけの１曲なのです。
そんなセット以上なのは、演奏そのもの。マーティ＆ニックを得た事で演奏力が格段にハネ上がったわけですが、この頃はまだまだスラッシュ然とした爆走感も併せ持っている。整合感を湛えつつ複雑な曲想をかっ飛ばしていく醍醐味は、それこそMETALLICAの“DAMAGED JUSTICE Tour”にも匹敵する。公式／非公式に関係なく、問答無用でMEGADETH全記録の最強ライヴアルバムに間違いありません！
【DISC 2：COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION時代のフル・ライヴアルバム＋１】
オールキャリア・ベストとなる究極ライヴアルバムの後には、もう何を聴いても蛇足……とならないから本作は凄い！ 続くDISC 2は、全米２位に沸いていた「1992年12月４日カウ・パレス公演」のフル・ライヴアルバムです。
このライヴもコレクターにはお馴染み。1990年ウェンブリーと並んでシングルＢ面やプロモ盤、各種ボーナストラック等に細切れテイクが散らされた大定番です。こちらもウェンブリーSBDと同じで、10年前の『COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION』デラックス・エディションのボーナスディスクとして完全・決定盤が限定リリース。このディスクは、その廃番作品を精緻に復刻したわけです。
これがまた素晴らしい。『COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION』自体がミドル・テンポとメロディに開眼し、猛烈タイトなアンサンブルで描いた歴史的名盤なわけですが、その世界がものの見事にステージでも再現されている。
スラッシュ・ソングが激減した代わりに、ド定番となっていく代表曲が激増。ディスク１では聴けなかった名曲「Tornado Of Souls」も披露しています。しかも、「Countdown To Extinction」「Foreclosure Of A Dream」「This Was My Life」といった当時ならではのナンバーがアクセントとして効いている。そして、演奏。“RUST IN PEACE Tour”から一転して整合感最重視に振り切ったアンサンブルは、爆走しなくてもメタリックな魅力が全開。セットにしても、演奏スタイルにしても、その後の雛形がここで完成したのがよく分かります。
そんなフルライヴだけでも最高ですが、DISC 2の最後には「1992年５月23日アルパイン・バレー公演」から１曲「Hight Speed Dirt」も追加収録されています。後述するDISC 3に入りきらずにコチラに収録されたわけですが、この曲が選ばれたのにも意味がある。本編カウ・パレス公演では「Hight Speed Dirt」が演奏されておらず、このディスク単体で聴いてもダブり曲一切ナシのボーナス・トラックとなっているのです。
【DISC 3：YOUTHANASIA／CRYPTIC WRITINGS時代の公式ライヴ全集】
DISC 1-2はそれぞれ単体のフル・ライヴアルバムでしたが、公式ライヴ・テイクは他にも多数存在します。DISC 3は、そんな細切れテイクを一網打尽にしたコンピレーション・ディスクです。ただし、多数とは言ってもライヴごとに整理すると元は３公演。本作では、時系列で収録。公式盤ではアイテム毎に各テイクの音量／音圧がバラバラでしたが、本作では１つのライヴ作品として聴き通せるように統一化しています。
●1992年５月23日アルパインバレー公演（２曲）
アルアルパイン・バレー公演サウンドボードは合計３曲がリリースされており、シングル『SKIN O’MY TEETH』の各国盤に分散収録されていました。「Hight Speed Dirt」はDISC 2の最後でしたが、残る２曲「Skin O’ My Teeth」「Lucretia」はDISC 3に収録しました。ちなみに、公式DVD『ARSENAL OF MEGADETH』には「Skin O’ My Teeth」「Hight Speed Dirt」のライヴＰＶが収録されていますが、その音声もこのアルパインバレー公演サウンドボードです。
●1995年２月25日ロサンゼルス公演（５曲）
“YOUTHANASIA Tour”からはロサンゼルス公演のサウンドボードが５曲リリースされました。「Tornado Of Souls」「A Tout Le Monde」は元祖オフィシャルEP『LIVE TRAX』でも聴けましたが、残り３曲「Skin O’ My Teeth」「Holy Wars…The Punishment Due」「Symphony Of Destruction」はファンクラブ“CYBER ARMY”限定のプロモCDのみのレアトラック。もちろん、本作ではすべて収録した上で統一サウンドで楽しめるように仕上げてあります。
●1997年６月13日メサ公演（10曲）
最後は公式EP『LIVE TRAX』＆『LIVE TRAX II』のメインでもあった“CRYPTIC WRITINGS Tour”からの10曲。シークレットだった「Peace Sells」もトラック分けし、曲順もライヴ通りに並び替え。“CRYPTIC WRITINGS Tour”と言えば、最高峰フル・サウンドボード『DEFINITIVE BUENOS AIRES 1995+1997（Zodiac 222）』もお馴染みですが、「Use The Man」はそこでも聴けない美味しい１曲です。
以上、全49曲／３時間45分に及ぶ公式ライヴ集です。1990年ウェンブリー（DISC 1）にしろ、1992年カウ・パレス（DISC 2）にしろ、単体リリースされていれば歴史的大名盤間違いナシでした。それにも関わらずオフィシャルは限定商品のオマケにしてしまい、広く知られる事もなく長らく廃盤……。本作はそんな２大サウンドボードをメインに据えつつ、“黄金の４人”が残した細切れライヴ・トラックも完全網羅した３枚組なのです。
