Steve Hackett’s color was the richest “4 people era GENESIS”. Introducing Mike Millard’s original master, who can experience the scene in a superb way.
It was “March 27, 1977 San Diego performance” that was imbued with such a work. It is the transcendental audience recording. Normally, it was a mirrored only once per band, but as for GENESIS, he is a fan who repeats recording many times. The first time he experienced GENESIS was “A TRICK OF THE TAIL Tour”, which is familiar from our press masterpiece “BURBANK 1976 (Virtuoso 422/423)”. This work is a live album of the sequel “WIND & WUTHERING Tour”. Of course, this tour is also left in the traditional work “SECONDS OUT”, so let’s first grasp each sense of distance with the schedule at that time.

This is 1977 GENESIS. “WIND & WUTHERING” was released in December of the previous year, and the tour started early on New Year’s Day. The San Diego performance of this work was the 38th performance of the main “North America” ​​leg.
This work recorded at such a show is, as always … no, superb and superb than usual. The direct feeling of the core, the beauty of the sound, the fineness of the details … are so perfect that it makes me foolish to write them side by side. I tried playing it by mixing it with the official masterpiece “SECONDS OUT”, but there was almost no discomfort and I couldn’t tell which one was playing now. On the contrary, if you think “Oh, the sound has improved”, it’s about this work. Moreover, it seems that the goodness of this sound was unexpected for the Millard. Actually, the position on this day was “16th row”, which is almost 10 rows behind the sweet spot that Millard was aiming for. Perhaps I was half-disappointed and sat down, but the result was a better sound than ever. Perhaps because of GENESIS’s sound system, which was said to be the best of its time, or was Millard misunderstanding the sweet spot of the “sports arena”? In any case, the wonderful sound of this work is proof of the sound.
You might think, “If the sound is so good, why Amity label?”, But the reason is incomplete recording. The tape was finished without recording “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway / The Musical Box” that was played at the end. Kobo is also a mistake in writing, but it’s a waste because the sound is good. Anyway, everything else is perfect. Here, let’s organize the set of this work while comparing it with “SECONDS OUT”.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1977年３月27日サンディエゴ公演」。その超絶級オーディエンス録音です。普段は１バンド１回だけのミラードでしたが、GENESISに関しては何度も録音を繰り返すほどのファン。その彼が初めてGENESISを体験したのは“A TRICK OF THE TAIL Tour”で、当店のプレス名盤『BURBANK 1976（Virtuoso 422/423）』でもお馴染み。本作は、その続編ともなる“WIND & WUTHERING Tour”篇のライヴアルバムなのです。もちろん、このツアーは伝統作『SECONDS OUT』にも残されていますので、まずは当時のスケジュールでそれぞれの距離感を把握してみましょう。

これが1977年のGENESIS。『WIND & WUTHERING』は前年12月にリリースされ、元旦早々からツアー開始。本作のサンディエゴ公演は、そのメインである「北米」レッグの38公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、いつもの事ながら……いや、いつも以上に超・極上。芯のダイレクト感も、鳴りの美しさも、ディテールの細やかさも……と書き並べるのがバカらしくなるほど完璧。試しにオフィシャル名盤『SECONDS OUT』と混ぜて再生してみたのですが、ほとんど違和感がなくて今流れているのがどっちなのか分からなくなる。それどころか「お、音が良くなった」と思ったら本作の方だったりするくらいなのです。しかも、この音の良さは当のミラードにとっても想定外だったようです。実は、この日のポジションはミラードが狙っていたスウィート・スポットよりも10列近く後ろの「16列目」。恐らくは半ば落胆しながら席に着いたのでしょうが、ところが結果はこれまでになく素晴らしいサウンドに仕上がった。当代随一と言われたGENESISのサウンド・システムのせいか、あるいはミラードが“スポーツ・アリーナ”のスウィート・スポットを見誤っていたのか……。いずれにせよ、本作の見事なサウンドが音の証拠なのです。
「それだけ音が良いなら、なぜAmityレーベル？」と思われるかも知れませんが、その理由は不完全収録。ラストに演奏された「The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway/The Musical Box」が録音されずにテープが終了していたのです。弘法も筆の誤りと言いますか、音が良いだけに何とももったいない……。ともあれ、それ以外は完璧。ここで『SECONDS OUT』と比較しながら本作のセットも整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。“WIND & WUTHERING Tour”の代表作と言えば、当店のサウンドボード・アルバム『DEFINITIVE ZURICH 1977（Virtuoso 259/260）』も有名ですが、「Your Own Special Way」はそこでも聴けない美味しいレパートリー。それをサウンドボー級……いえ「オフィシャル級オーディエンス」のミラード・サウンドで楽しめるわけです。
ミラードの発掘事業も100本以上を数え、そろそろ打ち止めか……と思ったところで飛び出したGENESISの大傑作アルバムです。これだけ聴き倒しても、まだ新作の度に驚かされるミラード・サウンドの奥深さ。どうぞ、魅惑の“WIND & WUTHERING Tour”を舞台にした本作で存分に味わい尽くしてください。
