Allan Holdsworth was on the rise in 1993 with his breakthrough work “HARD HAT AREA”. Introducing a superb soundboard album in which the virtuosity of “King Of Legato”, which has a stronger jazz tone, flows into your brain.
What is sealed in this work is “February 20, 1993 West Hollywood performance”. This is a superb stereo soundboard recording recorded at the traditional venue “The Roxy”. I don’t know when “HARD HAT AREA” was produced, but it was released in the United States in 1994 (Japan was released in December 1993). On this day, there was still a long way to go until release. The band at that time was backed by Steve Hunt/Scri Severison, who also participated in “HARD HAT AREA”, and the man sitting on the stool was the master Chad Wackerman. This work is a live album of the 1st show out of 2 performances per day held with such a formation.
This work is a super-excellent soundboard that is currently a hot topic. This is an analog master recently discovered by the prestigious “Krw_co”, and the sound is “completely official quality”. Strictly speaking, it is not a type that is refined later like FM broadcasting, but a type that is directly connected to a mix desk. 会心作『HARD HAT AREA』で勢いに乗っていた1993年のアラン・ホールズワース。ジャズ色を強めていった“King Of Legato”の妙技が脳みそに流れ込む超極上サウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
そんな本作に封じられているのは「1993年２月20日ウェスト・ハリウッド公演」。伝統の名会場“The Roxy”で記録された超極上ステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。寡聞にして『HARD HAT AREA』の制作時期は分かりませんが、アメリカの発売は1994年になってから（日本発売は1993年12月）。この日はまだリリースまで間のある時期でした。当時のバンドは『HARD HAT AREA』にも参加したスティーヴ・ハント／スクリ・セヴァリソンが脇を固めつつ、スツールに座っているのは名手チャド・ワッカーマン。本作は、そんな編成で行われた１日２公演のうち、1stショウのライヴアルバムです。
そんな本作は、今話題の超極上サウンドボード。名門「Krw_co」が最近発掘したアナログ・マスターで、そのサウンドは「完全オフィシャル級」。厳密に言うとFM放送のように後から磨き込んだタイプではなく、ミックス卓直結系。そのため、現場の喝采が遠いさざ波のようでクラブ空間の体験感などは薄いのですが、音楽の性質上それがまったく問題にならない。むしろ、無加工な生演奏が骨太・肉厚・ド密着で迫り、全身と完全一致するシンクロ感がたまらない。演奏に入る前のささやかなカウントまで細やかな現実感、シンセの揺れまで鮮やかな繊細さ、頭蓋の端から端まで吹っ飛ぶような豪快幅のパン、四方八方から楽器音が飛び交うド真ん中に立つ没入感。どれもこれもが猛烈に鮮烈で、演奏者の呼吸感まで脳内で再現されていくのです。

ロック史に「唯我独尊」「孤高」と形容されるヒーローは数多くいますが、アラン・ホールズワースほど生涯をかけて貫いたギタリストはいないでしょう。そんな天才の90年代を象徴するような超極上サウンドボードです。本来であればオフィシャル化こそが相応しく、それこそ『HARD HAT AREA』とセットの２枚組にしてほしいほどの絶対的ライヴアルバム。どうぞ、存分にご堪能ください。
