At this moment, the newly excavated soundboard master of “California Jam” that is shaking collectors all over the world. The big favorite, DEEP PURPLE, is decided to be permanently preserved!
Of course, this work was recorded at “April 6, 1974 Ontario Motor Speedway Park”. “That night” was the biggest cypress stage of DEEP PURPLE in the 70’s. A legend that has already been made into an official work in both live albums and videos, and will definitely be featured in all kinds of documentaries. You may be wondering “what’s shocking now?” Just because it’s a symbolic performance that no one knows about purple fans, but this new excavation is completely different from the broadcasts and officials so far. It is a super direct sound filled with the sound of the on-site sound board itself.

● A new excavation master with “Karijam sound” popping out from your home speaker
The difference may be easier to understand if you speak from the origin rather than using sound quality as a word. What was excavated this time is the 1st Gene that was directly dubbed from the reel tape that was being turned at the site on the day of the festival. This reel was on stage and was recorded from a microphone placed in front of the amp. In other words, strictly speaking, it does not seem to be “line recording”, but what is recorded there is the sound output itself that the site PA was spitting out. There is almost no presence of a large audience, which is said to be 250,000 people, and there is no white processing to produce a concert experience. Only the thick legendary live performance roars like a slapstick in the brain with bare feet. It’s such a super-synchronized sound.
Moreover, it is the best. In the case of DEEP PURPLE, it is difficult to assert because there are a lot of genuine official works, but if you express it in the BLACK SABBATH version “ZODIAC 494” of simultaneous excavation, it is “the highest peak in history”. It has (significantly) surpassed all conventional records, including official history videos, and has completely dismissed it. In the case of DEEP PURPLE, the difference between “work-like sound” and “directly connected / unprocessed sound” is more important, but the sound quality itself is super-excellent like the BLACK SABBATH version.
However, this new excavation master was not perfect. The tape went out of control in the second half of the show, “You Fool No One”. It was terribly disturbed. Therefore, in this work, that part is replaced with the official DVD audio. In the net original sound, the full show is recorded including the few minutes that were cut. In addition, the pitch that was randomly disturbed in the original net sound is also corrected. We have achieved a degree of perfection that can be enjoyed as a “live music work” rather than as “evidence of the field”.

In such a replacement part, you will feel the powerful and unrivaled direct feeling of the newly excavated reel. The official voice that felt so fierce feels quiet. Moreover, the super powerful sound is not limited to playing. This show is symbolized by Ritchie Blackmore’s stage blast and guitar crash, but the destructive sound is intense again! Anyway, it is the sound output at the site, and it is completely unprocessed. The impact sound is also vivid, and the screams raised by the equipment itself are poured into the brain as it is. What’s more, Ian Paice’s fierce striking and John Lord’s distorted mad synths, which are still alive in the noise, are mixed in to create ridiculous chaos. Crash is often described as a manifestation of the rock spirit, but it’s not just a performance. The “sound” that it produces is avant-garde music that expresses a crazy world, and it was experimental rock that creates an uplifting feeling just by listening to it. What flows out of this work is a fierce sound that reminds us of such facts.
The end of such a show was also heard. In this new excavation, while thanking DEEP PURPLE’s enthusiastic performance, the end announcement that introduces the next EL & P is also recorded. This is already super real. After all, what was unfolding until just a while ago was a legendary stage that is unparalleled in rock history. The shock of witnessing the literal explosion performance is clearly reflected in the voice of the announcement, and he manages to spit out a fixed line without power. In other words, this work is an on-site sound sound board that you can feel as if you were breathing.

Anyway, it’s amazing. It’s too amazing. Is this really the “Karijam” that I listened to with my ear octopus? Certainly the performance is the same. The singing voice is the same. Everything I’m doing is the same, but it sounds completely different. It is a shocking ultra-direct sound board that teaches such “on-site PA sound”. そんな本作が記録されたのは、もちろん「1974年４月６日オンタリオ・モーター・スピードウェイ・パーク」。70年代DEEP PURPLE最大の檜舞台だった、“あの夜”です。すでにライヴアルバムでも映像でもオフィシャル作品化され、ありとあらゆるドキュメンタリーでも絶対に取り上げられる伝説。パープル・ファンで知らぬ者はいないほどの象徴公演だけに「今さら何が衝撃？」と思われるかも知れませんが、今回の新発掘はこれまでの放送やオフィシャルとはまったく異なる。現場サウンドボードそのものの音が詰まった超ダイレクト・サウンドなのです。

●自宅スピーカーから「カリジャムの出音」が飛び出す新発掘マスター
その違いは音質を言葉にするより出自でお話しした方がわかりやすいかも知れません。今回発掘されたのはフェス当日の現場で回されていたリール・テープからダイレクトにダビングされた1stジェネ。このリールはステージ上にあり、アンプの前に置かれたマイクから録音されていたのです。つまり、厳密に言いますと「ライン録音」ではないようなのですが、そこに記録されているのは現場ＰＡが吐き出していた出音そのもの。25万人とも言われる大観衆の存在感はほとんどなく、コンサート体験を演出する白々しい加工もゼロ。極太な伝説の生演奏だけが土足で脳みその中にズカズカ上がり込んでくるように図々しく轟く。そんな超シンクロ系サウンドなのです。
しかも、極上。DEEP PURPLEの場合は本物のオフィシャル作品が大量にあるので断言しづらいのですが、同時発掘のBLACK SABBATH篇『ZODIAC 494』で表現しますと「史上最高峰」。公式ヒストリービデオを含め、従来のありとあらゆる記録を（大幅に）上回り、完全に一蹴してしまったのです。DEEP PURPLEの場合は「作品風サウンド」と「ド直結・無加工サウンド」の違いの方が重要になるものの、サウンド・クオリティ自体はBLACK SABBATH篇と同様に超・極上なのです。
ただし、この新発掘マスターは完璧ではありませんでした。ショウの後半「You Fool No One」でテープが暴走。酷く乱れていたのです。そこで、本作ではそのパートを公式DVD音声に差し替え。ネット原音ではカットされていた数分間も含めてフルショウを収録しています。また、ネット原音ではランダムに乱れていたピッチもビシッと補整。「現場の証拠物」ではなく、あくまでも「生演奏の音楽作品」として楽しめる完成度を実現しました。

●破壊音も呆気にとられるDJも超リアルな歴史体験盤
そんな差し替えパートで実感するのは、新発掘リールの強力無比なダイレクト感。あれほど苛烈に感じられた公式音声が大人しく感じられるほどです。しかも、超強力サウンドは演奏だけに留まらない。このショウはリッチー・ブラックモアによるステージ爆破＆ギター・クラッシュが象徴となっておりますが、その破壊音がまた強烈！　なにせ現場の出音ですし、完全無加工。衝撃音も鮮烈ですし、機材自体が上げる悲鳴がそっくりそのまま脳内に流し込まれる。しかも、そのノイズにまだ生きているイアン・ペイスの苛烈な連打やジョン・ロードの歪んだ狂音シンセも混ざり込んでとんでもないカオスを生み出している。クラッシュはロック精神の発露として語られがちですが、単なるパフォーマンスではない。生み出す「音」自体が狂世界を表現するアヴァンギャルド・ミュージックであり、聴いているだけで高揚感を生むエクスペリメンタル・ロックだった。本作から流れ出るのは、そんな事実を改めて突きつけてくれる激サウンドなのです。
そんなショウの最後も聞き物。今回の新発掘にはDEEP PURPLEの熱演に礼を述べつつ、次なるEL&Pを紹介する終演アナウンスも収録しています。これがもう、超リアル。何しろ、ついさっきまで繰り広げられていたのはロック史でも並ぶもののない伝説のステージ。文字通りの爆裂パフォーマンスを目の当たりにした衝撃はアナウンスの声にもハッキリと表れており、力なく決まった台詞をなんとか吐き出している。つまり、本作はその息づかいまでもアリアリと感じ取れる現場音サウンドボードなのです。
