“Performance in Berlin on May 21, 1971” is imbued in this work. It is the best audience recording. Speaking of 1971, it is generally “the year of FIREBALL”, but it is also known as the climax of the second DEEP PURPLE among sound source collectors. Standing at the forefront of the scene with the hit “IN ROCK”, that confidence and sense of fulfillment turned into songwriting and performance abilities. It was also a time when he created a group of masterpieces that will remain in rock history one after another, but on stage, his genius at the peak was also the driving force behind his thrilling phrase exchanges. The Berlin performance of this work was at its peak as the number of new songs increased from improvisational orientation to music orientation. This show has been a classic recording representing 1971 since ancient times, and has been upgraded repeatedly over the years. The highest peak master was discovered in 2020. The Omoto reel was discovered, which is incomparable to the conventional recording time and sound. It was very popular as “DEFINITIVE BERLIN 1971” at our shop, but this work is a refurbishment of the original reel master by “GRAF ZEPPELIN”. The sound is definitely the best ever. It has a direct feeling with zero sense of distance, but it has a tremendous glamor that does not flinch even when approaching the power. There are no dubbing marks only in Omoto, and the opening part that was not in the conventional master, “Bavarian Yodeler” played by Richie & Guillain, and “Speed ​​King” that avalanches from there are also recorded for more than 18 minutes. .
And detailed mastering by “GRAF ZEPPELIN”. The method is “on-site sound supremacy”. We do not carry out decorative processing such as reckless sound pressure gain, but instead perform work such as correction of pitch and phase shift, and treatment of various noises with abnormal precision. Mastering is like restoration work for so-called paintings. Because of such a method, the width of change varies depending on the state of the original master. If the condition is not good, it will be “just another thing”, and if the condition is good, it will not change so much. In the case of this work, the condition of the original reel is quite good, so it is not a big deal, but the noise that occurred in one channel is still removed. There is no doubt that it is the highest peak board that has raised the “top” of historical name recordings by one step.

これが1971年のDEEP PURPLE。シングル『Strange Kind of Woman』の発売から新曲が増え始め、「欧州#2」辺りで遂に「Highway Star」や「Lazy」も登場。その後の雛形が完成します。インプロ志向が絶頂だったのは、その寸前。『FIREBALL』発売を挟んだ「欧州#1」「北米#1」辺りだったと言われています。本作のベルリン公演は、その前者である「欧州#1」の21公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
このショウは古くから1971年を代表する定番録音が残され、長年に渡ってアップグレードを繰り返してきました。その最高峰マスターが発掘されたのは2020年。収録時間もサウンドも従来とは比べものにならない大元リールが発見されたのです。当店でも『DEFINITIVE BERLIN 1971』として大人気を誇ったわけですが、本作はその大元リール・マスターを「GRAF ZEPPELIN」が磨き直したものなのです。そのサウンドは、間違いなく過去最高。距離感ゼロのダイレクト感でありつつ、ド迫力に迫ってもビビらない艶やかさは絶大。大元だけにダビング痕はまったくなく、従来マスターにはなかった開演パートやリッチー＆ギランが遊ぶ「Bavarian Yodeler」、そこから雪崩れ込む「Speed King」も18分以上も長く収録しているのです。
そして「GRAF ZEPPELIN」による細密マスタリング。その手法は「現場音至上主義」。無闇な音圧稼ぎ等の装飾加工は行わず、その代わりピッチや位相ズレの補正、各種ノイズのトリートメントといった作業を異常な精度で施す。いわゆる絵画の修復作業のようなマスタリングなのです。そうした手法ゆえに、元マスターの状態によって変化の幅は様々。状態が良くなければ「まるで別物」となりますし、状態が良ければそれほど大きくは変わりません。本作の場合、大元リールの状態がかなり良いために大化けとはなっていませんが、それでも片チャンネルに発生していたノイズを除去。歴史的な名録音の「てっぺん」を一段引き上げた最高峰盤なのも間違いありません。
そんな史上最高峰更新サウンドで甦るのは、刃の上を渡り歩くようなスリル溢れるフルショウ。1971年と言えば、サウンドボード名盤『LONG BEACH ARENA 1971 COMPLETE（Darker Than Blue 128/129）』が象徴でもありますので、ここで比較しながら整理してみましょう。

そして、そんなセットに大量にまぶされたインプロが最高！　第二期のライヴは1970年から1972年にかけて「美味しいフレーズ」が徐々に固まっていき、最後には定型フレーズのお約束な雰囲気に変わっていく。本作の1971年は、言わば「美味しいフレーズ」の開発後期と言ったところ。1970年のように「１曲で30分以上」ということはないのですが、それがテンションダウンにはなってない。むしろ、効果的なフレーズがどんど溜まってきたために次々と畳みかけるインプロ合戦の緊張起案がグイグイと上がっていく。それでいながらフレーズが定型化されていないので次に何が飛び出すか分からず、濃密なままダレない……まさに「絶頂」時代だからこその凄まじい演奏が吹き荒れるのです。
1970年より濃密で、1972年よりハイテンション。そんな「1971年」を極上フル体験できる奇跡のライヴアルバムです。DEEP PURPLEには膨大な数のライヴアルバムが残されておりますが、ここまでの「極めたフルショウ」が楽しめるのは『DANISH YODEL（Darker Than Blue 315/316）』と本作くらいのものでしょう。まさしく文化遺産以外の何物でもない名録音、その最高峰更新盤。どうぞ、輝きを永久に失わないプレス２CDで存分にご体験ください。
