“ISOLAR 1976 TOUR”の大代表サウンドボードが記録されたのは「1976年３月23日ナッソー公演」。このショウはラジオ放送され、そのサウンドボード録音は古くから数々の名作を生み出してきた定番中の大定番。2010年には『STATION TO STATION』スーパー・デラックス・エディションのボーナスとして公式化され、2017年には『LIVE NASSAU COLISEUM ’76』として単独盤もリリースされました。それだけにアンダーグラウンドの役目は終わった……とも思われましたが、そうではなかった。公式化の歓喜が徐々に醒めてくるとマニア間で「ラジオ放送版の方が音が良い」と言われるようになった。それ以上なのが「Panic In Detroit」。公式盤は約６分に編集されていましたが、本来はデニス・デイヴィスのドラムソロがインクルードされていたのです。本作は、そんなラジオ放送版サウンドボードの最高峰を究めたライヴアルバムなのです。
超有名サウンドボードだけに無数の既発が存在するわけですが、その中でもマニアから最高峰とされているのがWhy Artsレーベル盤で知られるマスター。本作は、そのベスト・バージョンを元に曲順を実際のコンサートに揃え、放送されなかった「Waiting for the Man」「Queen Bitch」「Life on Mars?」を他の極上サウンドボードで補填したもの。そのため「Five Years」が未収録で「Life on Mars?」が途中までなのですが、全曲がオフィシャル『LIVE NASSAU COLISEUM ’76』と異なっている。「公式盤の裏バージョン」とも言える１枚なのです。
実際、そのサウンドは絶品。オフィシャル盤は2009年にミックスされているせいか音圧も高く、隅々までみっちりと音が詰まった現代的なサウンドでしたが、本作は70年代のリアル感が素晴らしい。公式バージョンはギターもリズム隊も芯だけが力強くグイグイと押してくる感じだったものの、本作はむしろエッジの細やかさが素晴らしい。各楽器に呼吸するスキマがあり、弦や皮の振動が目に浮かぶほどにリアル。スネアにもパンパンと耳に突き刺さるような音圧がなく、非常に自然なアンサンブルが楽しめるのです。
それはボウイの歌声にしても然り。公式盤はただでさえ音圧の高い演奏の“更に上”に乗っかるようなミックス。一般的にボウイが主役なので当然のようにも思われますが、その主従関係を重視するが故に歌声自体に立体感がなく、まるでカラオケのようにも聞こえてしまう。それに対し、本作はボウイもバンドの一部。同じステージに立ち、アンサンブルの中で交感するバンドの呼吸感がリアルなのです。パッと聴いた感じでは公式盤の方がボウイがフィーチュアされていますが、現場の立体感、本物のライヴ感は本作こそが圧倒的なのです。
