The 50th anniversary edition of Crosby Stills Nash & Young’s masterpiece “DEJA VU” was released two weeks ago, and the domestic edition will be released tomorrow, and Mike Millard Master by the JEMS team is also surprised by CSNY. He unearthed the sound source of. What was released this time is the first appearance sound source that Millard recorded their stage at Santa Monica in 1990.
I’ve been surprised by the discovery of unknown mirrored sound sources, but it’s also quite surprising that he was recording CSNY in 1990. This is because the four of us at this time were “always meet once a year” even if they weren’t constant, and most of the time they were at charity concerts.
In other words, it was a time when the four CSNY members reunited once a year and went up to the stage, triggered by the reunion that was realized at Live Aid in 1985. As for 1990, four people gathered at the charity concert for two consecutive days from March to April.
The Mirrored Master released this time was capturing Santa Monica on March 31st. Moreover, the concert on this day is not just a charity. It was an event for CSNY’s original drummer, Dallas Taylor, who was also involved in the recording of the previous album “DEJA VU”.
Like the four, he was immersed in alcohol and drugs in the 70’s. Drinking alcohol in particular became a major problem for him, and he eventually fell into a state where he needed a liver transplant. It was this charity that was done to raise the cost of his treatment.

Not only was it a stage with such a special taste, but it also attracted a great deal of attention in the United States because the four CSNY members gathered to save their former bandmates. Because of that, Millard couldn’t secure the usual good position, and in the case of this sound source, the sound pressure was not as powerful as the usual mirrored recording. Still, it seems that Millard went to the venue because he himself wanted to see the gathering of four people and Taylor for the first time in a long time.
In addition, the JEMS team that released this sound source also evaluated that “the sound image has a sense of distance, but the sound quality itself is very clear.” In fact, the freshness of the tape is also wonderful, and it goes perfectly with the stage of the group that mainly focuses on acoustic sound. Since it is a sound source that Millard recorded such a precious day, we carefully adjusted the pitch while releasing it on CD-R, and evolved it into a state that is easier to hear.

And the stage starts with Neil’s solo. An aggressive set list with only new songs such as the album “FREEDOM” that was just released at that time or “Mother Earth” that will be recorded in the next album. You can see the confidence unique to the time when the previous album brought back the breath as an artist.
Next is the acoustic stage by the three CSNs, which was also the time when they were energetically touring. In addition, it was also a time when the first three people would come to Japan two months later. For that reason, the harmony of the three and the guitar of Stephen Stills are also staging with clear skill.
After finishing the set with three people with the classic “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”, Neil appeared and CSNY reunited. Here, too, their version was not released and the curtain was opened with “Human Highway”, and Neil’s “Silver And Gold”, which was an unreleased song at that time, was played as CSNY, which is valuable and here. But the aggressive attitude stands out.
And after all, in the last two songs, the main character of the event, Taylor, joined him and CSNY’s full band performance was realized for the first time in 20 years. The excitement is tremendous, especially the cheers for Taylor. If it’s a recording of a regular concert, it could be dismissed as “noisy around”, but this is a concert that rescues Dallas Taylor. It’s just the audience who really wanted to see the reunion of CSNY and Taylor after a long time … I think it’s rather moving.
Unfortunately he died in 2015 at the age of 66, but he could have died earlier if he hadn’t had transplant surgery performed after this support concert. After successful surgery, Taylor devoted his life to raising awareness of alcohol and drug addiction rehabilitation. Millard left behind a rare stage that was an important day in the history of CSNY and also included abundant precious performances. Please enjoy it carefully.

クロスビー・スティルス・ナッシュ＆ヤングの名盤「DEJA VU」の50周年記念盤が二週間前にリリースされ、明日はその国内盤がリリースされるという中、JEMSチームによるマイク・ミラード・マスターもCSNY驚きの音源を絶好のタイミングで発掘してくれました。今回公開されたのは彼らの1990年のサンタモニカでのステージをミラードが録音した初登場音源。
これまでも知られざるミラード音源の発掘には驚かされ続けてきましたが、彼が1990年のCSNYを録音していたというのも相当な驚きなのでは。というのも、この時期の四人はコンスタントでなくとも「一年に一回は必ず顔を合わせる」という時期であり、たいていはその場がチャリティー・コンサートであったからです。
つまり85年のライブ・エイドで実現した久々の再会をきっかけとして、CSNY四人が年に一度は再結集してステージに上がっていた時期。90年に関しては3月から4月にかけて二日連続でチャリティー・コンサートの場に四人が揃いました。
今回公開されたミラード・マスターが捉えていたのは3月31日のサンタモニカ。しかもこの日のコンサートは単なるチャリティーではありません。先のアルバム「DEJA VU」のレコーディングにも参加していたCSNYのオリジナル・ドラマー、ダラス・テイラーの為のイベントだったのです。
四人がそうだったように、彼もまた70年代にはお酒とドラッグに浸っていました。特に飲酒が彼の大きな問題となり、遂には肝臓移植が必要な状態にまで堕ちてしまった。そんな彼の治療費を募るべく行われたのがこのチャリティーだったという訳です。

そうした特殊な趣向のステージであったのはもちろん、かつてのバンドメイトを救うべく、CSNYの四人が結集するということからアメリカでは大きな注目を集めたのです。そのせいでミラードはいつものグッド・ポジションを確保することができず、今回の音源の場合、いつものミラード録音のような迫力の音圧とはいきませんでした。それでもミラードが会場に向かったのには、やはり彼自身も四人やテイラー久しぶりの集結を見たかったからだったようです。
それに今回の音源を公開したJEMSチームも「距離感のある音像だが、音質自体は非常にクリア」と評価しているほど。実際テープの鮮度も素晴らしく、それがアコースティック・サウンド主体なグループのステージだけに相性はバッチリ。そんな貴重な一日をミラードが録音してくれた音源ですので、CD-Rでのリリースながらもピッチを丁寧にアジャスト、より聞きやすい状態へと進化させました。

そしてステージはニールのソロからスタート。当時リリースされたばかりのアルバム「FREEDOM」あるいは次のアルバムに収録されることになる「Mother Earth」など新曲ばかりで固められた攻めのセットリスト。先のアルバムでアーティストとしての息を吹き返した時期ならではの自信が伺えます。
次はCSN三人によるアコースティックなステージで、この時代の彼らは精力的にツアーをこなしていた時期でもある。おまけに二か月後には三人として初来日が実現するという時期でもありました。それだけに三人のハーモニーやスティーブン・スティルスのギターも手練の技が冴えたステージング。
三人でのセットを定番「Suite: Judy Blue Eyes」にて締めくくった後、ニールが登場してCSNYが再結集。ここでも彼らとしてのバージョンはリリースされずじまいだった「Human Highway」で幕を開け、さらに当時は未発表曲であったニールの「Silver And Gold」をCSNYとして演奏するといった具合で貴重かつ、ここでも攻めの姿勢が際立ちます。
そして何と言ってもラスト二曲ではイベントの主人公、テイラーも加わって彼とCSNYのフルバンド演奏がちょうど20年ぶりに実現。その盛り上がりは凄まじく、中でもテイラーへの声援が飛び交う。それが通常のコンサートの録音であれば「周囲が騒がしい」と片付けられてしまいかねませんが、これはダラス・テイラーを救済するコンサート。本当にCSNYとテイラー久しぶりの再結集が見たくて集まったオーディエンスばかりなのだな…むしろ感動させられるのではないでしょうか。
残念ながら彼は2015年に66歳の生涯を閉じましたが、もしこの支援コンサート後に行われた移植手術がなければもっと早く亡くなっていたかもしれない。手術を成功させたテイラーはアルコールやドラッグの依存症リハビリの啓蒙活動に人生を捧げていたのです。そんなCSNYの歴史に残る重要な一日であり、なおかつ貴重な演奏もふんだんに含まれたレア・ステージをミラードが遺してくれました。是非じっくりとお楽しみください。
