A concert held on October 10th at the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey, from Pete Townshend’s last American tour in 1982, which he declared as the “Farewell Tour.” This is a press 2CD completely recorded with the finest stereo sound board recording that rivals the official live version. The original master’s pitch was inaccurate, so after thorough verification at our store, we increased the pitch by 1.8% to achieve the original normal pitch. In other words, this board can be said to be a genuine realization of what this sound source should be. In the first two songs, it can be seen that the engineer was experimenting with the mix, and the phase is irregular, with Pete’s guitar in the center and Roger’s vocals in the right channel, which is slightly off. From the middle of “Can’t Explain”, the phase and volume balance are improved, and Pete becomes stable on the right and Roger on the center. What’s amazing about this sound quality and mix is that Kenny Jones’ drums with many toms are captured in multi-track, and the sharpness of Pete’s Schecter Telecaster called “Sharan” is unique to this tour. The thrill of his fills flowing from the right channel to the left channel with a certain stroke is the best. It can be said that the sound is comparable to, or even better than, the official live version. Just by listening to the opening bass sound of John Entwistle, you can be sure that you will be able to travel back in time to the venue.

This farewell tour was held from September 22nd to December 17th, immediately after they released their last album “IT’S HARD” on September 4th (during this period, they released their last album “IT’S HARD” on September 4th). (We took a vacation from Sunday to the 26th), this tour includes the 2-disc last live album “WHO’S LAST” released in 1984 after the disbandment, and the DVD and CD of the final performance in Toronto. (In addition, the remastered CD “IT’S HARD” includes four songs from the final performance as bonus tracks). The former live album included the sound source from the Litchfield Coliseum performance in Cleveland, Ohio on December 14th (only two songs were performed at the Kingdome in Seattle, Washington on October 20th). Of course, the sound source that can be heard in this work is different from those official takes. With a real unprocessed stereo soundboard, you can enjoy the best live performance full of momentum that is unique to this period.

The lineup was the same as the album “IT’S HARD”, with Kenny Jones on drums and Tim Gorman on keyboards. This tour was held under exactly IT’S HARD circumstances, as Pete Townshend was worried about the survival of the band, was having divorce issues in his personal life, and was addicted to drugs. For that reason, the passion that Pete and the band put into this tour to show their final brave figure was something that could be said to be exceptional even among previous Who tours. There were five songs from their most recent last album, but the rest included songs from their debut to their masterpieces “TOMMY” and “QUADROPHENIA,” creating a set list that could be called a culmination, covering all eras. I did. In terms of the flavor that cannot be heard on the official live version, the appeal is that you can listen to “Athena” from “IT’S HARD”. The live version of this song has never appeared in bootlegs so far, so it can be said to be a very rare live take. Moreover, the performance is wonderful. In addition, the initial number “Substitute”, which was played at the beginning of the previous tour, is unusually played at the end of the climax when the excitement is at its climax, so you can enjoy the outstanding sense of drive. The Who explodes with Kenny Jones’ tight and laborious drumming, Pete Townshend’s razor-sharp chord cutting, John Entwistle’s crisp lead bass, and Roger Daltrey’s sings-heart-out shouts. 1982年、ピート・タウンゼンドが自ら「フェアウェル・ツアー」と宣言して実施した最後のアメリカン・ツアーから、10月10日ニュー・ジャージー州イースト・ラザフォード、ブレンダン・バーン・アリーナで行なわれたコンサートをオフィシャル・ライブ盤顔負けの極上ステレオ・サウンドボード録音で完全収録したプレス2CDです。元マスターではピッチが不正確だったため、当店での徹底検証の末、1.8％高めて本来の正常なピッチを実現しています。つまり、本盤が正真正銘、この音源の本来あるべき姿を実現したものと言えます。冒頭の２曲では、エンジニアがミックスを試行錯誤している様子が窺え、ピートのギターがセンター、ロジャーのボーカルがオフ気味に右チャンネル、というイレギュラーな位相になっていますが、それも「I Can’t Explain」の途中から位相・音量バランスが改善され、ピートが右、ロジャーはセンターに安定します。素晴らしいのは何と言ってもこの音質とミックスで、ケニー・ジョーンズのタム数の多いドラムがマルチ・トラックで捉えられており、このツアー特有の、ピートの使用するシェクター・テレキャスターの「シャラーン」という切れ味のあるストロークに乗って、右チャンネルから左チャンネルへ流れていく彼のフィル回しのスリルが最高です。オフィシャル・ライブ盤に匹敵する、いやそれ以上の素晴らしいサウンドと言っていいでしょう。オープニングのジョン・エントウィッスルによる指慣らしのバキバキ・ベースサウンドを聞いただけで、もう会場にタイムスリップできること請け合いです。

このフェアウェル・ツアーは、彼らがラスト・アルバム「IT’S HARD」を9月4日にリリースした直後の9月22日から12月17日までの長丁場で実施されたもので（この間、11月1日～26日までは休暇を挿みました）、このツアーからは、解散後の1984年に２枚組のラスト・ライブ盤「WHO’S LAST｣とその後、最終公演のトロント公演のDVDとCDがリリースされました（さらに、リマスター盤のCD｢IT’S HARD｣にはボーナストラックとして最終公演からの4曲が収録されています）。前者のライブ盤は、12月14日のオハイオ州クリーヴランドのリッチフィールド・コロシアム公演（2曲のみ10月20日のワシントン州シアトルのキングドーム公演）での音源を収録していました。勿論、本作で聴ける音源は、それら公式テイクとは別物です。未加工のリアルなステレオ・サウンドボードで、この時期ならではの、勢いに満ちた最高のライヴを堪能できます。

メンバーはアルバム｢IT’S HARD｣と同じで、ドラムはケニー・ジョーンズ、キーボードにティム・ゴーマンを迎えた布陣でした。ピート・タウンゼンドがバンドの存続に悩み、また私生活面では離婚問題を抱えてドラッグ中毒に陥っていた中で決断したという、まさにIT’S HARDな状況下で行なわれたツアーでした。それだけに、ピートとバンドが最後の勇姿を見せるべくこのツアーに懸けた情熱は、歴代のフーのツアーでも別格と言えるものでした。直近のラスト・アルバムからは5曲が組まれていましたが、その他はデビュー曲から大作「TOMMY」「QUADROPHENIA」の楽曲を含み、全時代を網羅する、まさに集大成と呼べるセットリストを実現していました。オフィシャル・ライブ盤では聴けないという旨味の点では、「IT’S HARD」からの「Athena」が聴けることが魅力となっています。この曲のライブ・バージョンはこれまでブートレッグでも一切出現していませんでしたので、非常にレアなライブテイクと言えます。しかも演奏の出来映えが素晴らしいです。また、かつてのツアーでは序盤で演奏されていた初期ナンバー「Substitute」が珍しく盛り上がりが最高潮の終盤で演奏されていることで、抜群のドライブ感を味わうことができるのも一興です。ケニー・ジョーンズのタイトで手数の多いドラミングをバックに、ピート・タウンゼンドの切れ味抜群のコード・カッティング、ジョン・エントウィッスルのブリブリ・リードベース、ロジャー・ダルトリーのsings heart outなシャウトが炸裂するザ・フーらしい演奏を全編でお楽しみください。
