“WORLD VACATION TOUR 1979” which swept the world as a headliner. The shocking and sold-out sound board album is re-appearing in the 2nd press.
This work contains the transcendental stereo sound board recording of “Tucson performance on October 2, 1979”. The biggest point of this work is the tremendous quality, but anyway, the position of the show. First, let’s imagine from the whole world tour.

VAN HALEN became more concentrated in North America as the tours were repeated, but in this era, Europe and Japan are still touring. It was literally a “world tour”. Under such circumstances, the Tucson performance of this work is “North America # 3”, which returned to its home country after traveling around the world. It was the 9th concert, which was the final stage of the tour.
This work containing such a show is the finest sound board that appeared in recent years. Speaking of VAN HALEN’s 70’s sound board, I remember “WICHITA 1978 (Zodiac 303)”, which was a record-breaking hit right after its debut, but this work was also excavated by the same route. Probably because of that, the quality is similar, and the feeling of direct connection that is different from the well-maintained broadcast sound source is tremendous. The Tucson Convention Center, which was the site of the event, is a hall class with a capacity of 2,300 people, but I don’t know how big it is. The loud cheers are felt far and far away, and the sounds and vocals of the four performers are directly heard. That’s the kind of close contact and synchronization that you can’t even call a small club or rehearsal studio.
The world’s enthusiasts are brilliant only with such a fierce sound board, but this work is even more meticulous mastering. Although the original sound had a transcendent direct feeling, all the instruments were a little flat. In this work, the sound is organized for each range. I finished it so that each sound of each instrument can be felt three-dimensionally. If you compare this to a painting, the original sound is a flat watercolor painting, while this work is an oil painting. Even the unevenness of the paint is real, and the shadows created from it have a sense of presence and response. The sound quality is high in terms of audio, but the feeling that “VAN HALEN is there” is overwhelming. Of course, these are all the umami that the sound board sound source originally had, and they were not made by force. It vividly brought out the beauty that was difficult to feel in the original sound.
The show drawn with that sound is also the best. The length is what makes me happy. Recently, the sound boards of the debut tour have become very popular in our shop, but they are one CD at the opening performance. On the other hand, this work is a full-scale show that takes more than 95 minutes. Let’s organize the contents here.

… And it looks like this. Of course, it doesn’t make sense to dilute it, but VAN HALEN in 1979 doesn’t have to worry about it. The set, which is selected from the two masterpieces “Van Halen” and “Van Halen II” in half and half, is rich and rich in variety. A number of historical iron plate songs are shown, and famous songs such as “Atomic Punk”, “Light Up The Sky” and “Outta Love Again” that radiate the early mood are delicious even in the first VAN HALEN. More than that, “You’re No Good” and “Outta Love Again” are the scents of “1979”! “Outta Love Again” was performed several times in 2012, but basically the two songs are a repertoire only for this tour. You can enjoy it with the official barefoot sound board.
It is a set that is rich in variety without blurring from the main road, but VAN HALEN who plays it is also amazing. The overwhelming concentration does not reach the debut tour, but the performance is definitely scaled up. David Lee Roth’s singing mouth is horribly open and Eddie’s phrase is full of openness if the beat is also rugged. The experience of traveling around the world in 1978 is definitely being utilized, and the dignified appearance has already created a world-class big-name feeling. I wrote earlier that “I don’t know if it’s called a rehearsal studio”, but that’s just the story of sound, and the performance and singing voice is definitely the dynamism of the actual concert, rather “the arena or stadium show”. It’s a big spectacle that you can believe.

“WORLD VACATION TOUR 1979” with increased variety and scale while maintaining the fierce heat lock. This is a superb sound board album that screwed the final stage of the tour that defined the early VH show into the brain. The 2nd press is an unprecedented one that you can completely immerse yourself in a full show for over an hour and a half. Please do not miss this opportunity!

そんな本作に収められているのは「1979年10月２日ツーソン公演」その超絶級ステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。本作最大のポイントは凄まじいクオリティにあるのですが、何はさておきショウのポジション。まずは、ワールドツアー全体像の中からイメージしてみましょう。

《12月『暗黒の掟』制作開始》

VAN HALENはツアーを重ねるほどに北米偏重になっていくのですが、この時代はまだまだヨーロッパや日本も巡業。文字通りの「ワールドツアー」でした。そんな中で、本作のツーソン公演は、世界中を巡った後に本国へ帰ってきた「北米#3」。ツアー最終盤となる９公演目のコンサートでした。
そんなショウを収めた本作は、近年になって登場した極上サウンドボード。VAN HALENの70年代サウンドボードというと、記録的大ヒットとなったデビュー直後の『WICHITA 1978（Zodiac 303）』も思い出されますが、本作もまた同じルートで発掘されたもの。そのせいかクオリティも似ており、綺麗に整備された放送音源とは違う卓直結感が凄まじい。現場となったツーソン・コンヴェンション・センターは2,300人収容のホール・クラスなのですが、その広さがまるで分からない。大歓声は遠く遠くに感じられ、４人の演奏音やヴォーカルが直接耳に流し込まれる。それこそ狭いクラブやリハーサル・スタジオと言われても分からないド級の密着感・シンクロ感なのです。
そんな激烈サウンドボードだけに全世界のマニアが色めき立っているわけですが、本作はさらに細心マスタリング。原音はダイレクト感こそ超絶ではあっても、全楽器がやや平板的でもありました。本作では、そのサウンドを各音域毎に整理。１楽器の１音ずつが立体的に感じられるように仕上げました。これを絵画に喩えるなら原音が平らな水彩画なのに対し、本作は油絵。絵の具の凹凸までもがリアルで、そこから生まれる陰影にまで存在感・手応え感が宿る感じ。オーディオ的に言っても高音質になっていますが、それ以上に“VAN HALENがそこにいる”感が圧倒的です。もちろん、これらはすべてサウンドボード音源が元々持っていた旨みであり、むりやり作ったものではありません。原音では感じにくかった美点を鮮やかに引き出したのです。
そのサウンドで描かれるショウがまた最高。何よりも嬉しいのが長さ。最近、当店ではデビュー・ツアーのサウンドボードが大人気となっておりますが、それらは前座公演でCD１枚物。それに対し、本作は堂々95分を超えるフルスケールのショウなのです。ここでその内容も整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。もちろん、それで薄まってしまっては意味がないところですが、1979年のVAN HALENにその心配はない。２大名盤『炎の導火線』『伝説の爆撃機』からほぼ半々にセレクトされたセットは濃厚な上にバラエティまで豊かになっている。歴史的な鉄板曲の数々が披露され、「Atomic Punk」や「Light Up The Sky」「Outta Love Again」など、第１期VAN HALENでも初期のムードを発散する名曲が美味しい。それ以上に“1979年”の薫りタップリなのが「You’re No Good」と「Outta Love Again」！　「Outta Love Again」は2012年にも何度か演奏していますが、基本的に２曲はこのツアーだけのレパートリー。それをオフィシャル裸足の極上サウンドボードで味わえるのです。
本道からブレずにバラエティだけ豊かになったセットですが、それを演じるVAN HALENも凄い。圧倒的な濃度はデビュー・ツアーには及びませんが、パフォーマンスは確実にスケール・アップ。ビートも豪放磊落ならデヴィッド・リー・ロスの歌い口は恐ろしく開けっぴろげですし、エディのフレーズもやたら開放感に満ちている。1978年に全世界を巡った経験が確実に活きており、堂々とした佇まいが早くもワールドクラスの大物感を醸し出している。先ほど「リハーサル・スタジオと言われても分からない」と書きましたが、それはあくまでもサウンドの話であり、演奏・歌声は確実に本番コンサートのダイナミズムであり、むしろ「アリーナやスタジアムのショウ」と言われても信じるほどに一大スペクタクルなのです。

苛烈な熱量ロックはそのままに、バラエティとスケール感が増した“WORLD VACATION TOUR 1979”。初期VHのショウを定義づけたツアー最終盤を脳みそにねじ込む極上のサウンドボード・アルバムです。１時間半以上のフルショウにドップリと浸かりきれる空前絶後の１本が2ndプレス。どうぞ、この機会をお見逃しなく！
