Until around 1968, the rock world had both stereo and monaural mixes on albums. The Beatles and Dylan are now in an era where mono mixes have become fully covered digitally, but Simon & Co. Garfunkel. They also had stereo and mono albums coexisting until 1968, but in 1969 when stereo became popular, monaural albums were treated as out of print.
Under such circumstances, the last album “Bridge Over Tomorrow”, which literally decorated the beauty of the end, was released in stereo only, and their mono album was completely forgotten. If that’s all it is, for example, the same Columbia label allies Dylan and Byrds have reissued mono albums not only on CD but also on LP in the 21st century, but S & G has no such movement at all. I can’t help but be surprised that no recurrence of big names like them has been realized.
A mono album from S&G that literally goes unnoticed. As you know, Prof Stoned has faced the digitization head-on. He boldly transferred the US original mono LP, but the finish was perfect. This time, we will release S & G’s mono album from “SOUNDS OF SILENCE” to “BOOKENDS” on a limited press CD. It is a difficult task to realize a clear transfer from American vintage LPs, which tend to be treated as consumables compared to Japan and the UK, and I am even more overwhelmed by his wonderful work.
And like any artist in the 60’s, S&G’s albums also have a big difference in the mix between mono and stereo. This album is also a treasure trove of different mixes, but what surprises me is the mix with a deep echo that is completely different from the current stereo CD of the rare masterpiece “The Sound Of Silence”. It can be said that it is a finish like the 60’s.
“Somewhere They Can’t Find Me” and “We’ve Got A Groovy Thing Goin”, which are much more shocking than stereo, are full of monaural power, and “Richard Cory” is a double track with Simon’s vocals. .
Furthermore, “I Am A Rock”, which concludes the album, has a clear difference in the mix between the first press and the second press of the album, even though it is the same monaural, but Prof Stoned covers it all. The first press mix has no echo at the beginning of Simon’s singing, and the raw texture is attractive. because it was replaced.
Not only is it easy to understand the difference from stereo, but the extremely clean recording by Prof Stoned is just wonderful. For example, the sound of the bell in “Konoha wa Midori” is captured without distortion, which is the best example. Even if you get it on a vintage LP these days, it’s very difficult to play it so clearly, and I’m amazed by his excellent transfer ability.
Far from being S&G, the mono version of the masterpiece that explodes from the opening with another mix of “The Sound Of Silence”, one of the masterpieces of the 1960s. A shocking release that allows you to easily and cleanly play that precious mix!
1968年ぐらいまでステレオとモノラル両方のミックスがアルバムで用意されていたロック界。ビートルズやディランらはデジタルでもしっかりモノ・ミックスが網羅されるようになったご時世ですが、同じように60年代のビッグネームでありながら、アルバムのモノ・ミックスが放置プレーされて久しいのがサイモン＆ガーファンクル。彼らもまた68年まではステレオとモノがアルバムで共存していたのですが、ステレオ全盛となった1969年にはモノラルのアルバムが廃盤扱いとなってしまいます。
そうした中で文字通り有終の美を飾ったラスト・アルバム「明日に架ける橋」がステレオ・オンリーでリリースされるに至り、彼らのモノ・アルバムは完全に忘れ去られたのでした。それだけならまだしも、例えば同じコロンビア・レーベルの盟友ディランやバーズなどは21世紀に入ってモノ・アルバムがCDだけでなくLPまで再発されたというのに、S&Gはそうした動きがまったくない。彼らほどのビッグネームのモノ再発が一切実現していないとは驚きを禁じえません。
文字通り見過ごされているS&Gのモノ・アルバム。そのデジタル化に真っ向から向き合ってくれたのがご存じProf Stoned。彼はUSオリジナル・モノLPを果敢にもトランスファーしてくれたのですが、その仕上がりは完璧。今回はS＆Gのモノ・アルバムから「SOUNDS OF SILENCE」から「BOOKENDS」にかけての絶頂期名盤を限定プレスCDにてリリースいたします。日本やイギリスと比べて消耗品扱いされがちなアメリカのビンテージLPからクリアーなトランファーを実現させるのは至難の業といえ、なおさら彼の見事な仕事ぶりに圧倒させられることかと。
そして60年代アーティストの例に漏れず、S&Gのアルバムもモノとステレオでミックスに大きな違いが生まれています。本アルバムもミックス違いの宝庫なのですが、何と言っても驚かされるのは稀代の名曲「The Sound Of Silence」の現行ステレオCDとはまるで違った深いエコーの加えられたミックスにびっくり。いかにも60年代らしい仕上がりと言えるでしょう。
ステレオよりはるかにぶっとい音が衝撃的な「Somewhere They Can’t Find Me」と「We’ve Got A Groovy Thing Goin」はモノラルの迫力が全開ですし「Richard Cory」はサイモンのボーカルがダブルトラック。
さらにアルバムを締めくくる「I Am A Rock」は同じモノラルでもアルバムのファーストプレスとセカンドプレス以降でミックスにはっきりとした違いがあるのですが、Prof Stonedはそこまで網羅。ファーストプレスのミックスはサイモンの歌い出しにエコーがなく、何とも生々しい質感が魅力的なのですが、このミックスの収録は手違いだったと思われ、セカンドプレスから歌い出しにエコーが加えられたミックスへと差し替えられたのでした。
そうしたステレオとの分かりやすい違いだけでなく、Prof Stonedによるあまりにクリーンな収録状態がとにかく素晴らしい。例えば「木の葉は緑」の鈴の音が歪まずに捉えられているところなど、その最たる例では。今時ビンテージLPで手に入れたとしてしても、これほどまでクリアーに再生するのは非常に難しく、彼の卓越したトランスファー能力に?然とさせられる思いです。
S&Gどころか1960年代を代表する名曲の一つである「The Sound Of Silence」の別ミックスがオープニングから炸裂する名盤のモノ・バージョン。そのあまりに貴重なミックスが手軽かつクリーンに再生出来てしまう衝撃のリリース！
