《THE POLICE activity stopped》
This is THE POLICE in 1983/1984. The pattern of this tour is famous for the Atlanta performance that became the official work “LIVE!” And “SYNCHRONICITY CONCERT”, but the New York performance of this work is much earlier than that. It was the 16th performance of “North America # 1”, about two and a half months after the album was released.
The quality of this work, which is a vacuum-packed show that is too special, is also special. Anyway, it’s clear and vivid. As you are familiar with the Beatles video, you can see that the site “Shea Stadium” is an open space baseball stadium, and the sound of PA is picked up with zero echo. Of course, if the outdoor venue is far from the PA itself, it will be squishy, but there is no worry about this work. Although you can feel the sense of space in the tone, the response of the dense core, the tight outline without a sense of distance, and the fine details of the bass are almost out of the standard of audience recording.
The ultra-tight sound is drawn with a set that summarizes the career and a full show that gives a sense of accomplishment after climbing Mt. Everest. You can enjoy the repertoire that you couldn’t hear on the official version by increasing the number of songs by four. In particular, “Murder by Numbers” is a video version of “SYNCHRONICITY CONCERT”, and you can enjoy the true full set seamlessly. And the wonderful thing about playing such a set. Although we handle countless records of artists from many bands, there are few shows that the artists themselves assert that “this is the goal”. Of course, there are times when you listen to Sting’s words after you know them in advance, but the performance that flows out just proves those words, and you can’t disagree with them.
And the MC of the now legendary “We’d like to thank the Beatles for lending us their stadium”. これが1983年／1984年のTHE POLICE。このツアーの模様は公式作『LIVE!』『SYNCHRONICITY CONCERT』ともなったアトランタ公演が有名ですが、本作のニューヨーク公演はそれよりグッと序盤。アルバム発売から約２ヶ月半後となる「「北米#1」の16公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
あまりにも特別なショウを真空パックした本作は、クオリティも特別。とにかくクリアでビビッド。ビートルズの映像でもお馴染みなように、現場となった“シェイ・スタジアム”はオープンスペースの野球場でして、ＰＡの出音を反響ゼロで拾っているのがよく分かる。もちろん、野外会場はＰＡ自体から遠ければスカスカになってしまいますが、本作にその心配はなし。音色に空間感覚は感じられるものの、密度たっぷりな芯の手応えも、距離感なくタイトに引き締まった輪郭も、ベースの微細部まで克明なディテールも、およそオーディエンス録音の規格外なのです。
そんな超タイト・サウンドで描かれるのは、キャリアを総括するようなセットと、エベレストに登り切った達成感が滲んでくるようなフルショウ。前述のように、“SYNCHRONICITY Tour”のライヴアルバムと言えば公式作『LIVE!』が有名ですので、比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。『LIVE!』はCD１枚に収めるためか不完全収録でしたが、本作は一気貫通のフル・ライヴアルバム。公式盤では聴けなかったレパートリーも４曲増量で楽しめる。特に「Murder by Numbers」は映像版『SYNCHRONICITY CONCERT』であり、真なるフルセットをシームレスに楽しめるのです。そして、そんなセットを紡ぐ演奏の素晴らしい事。幾多のバンドのアーティストの無数の記録を扱っておりますが、アーティスト自ら「ここが到達点だ」と断言するショウはほとんどない。もちろん、事前にスティングの言葉を知った上で聴いているというのもありますが、流れ出る演奏はその言葉を証明しこそすれ、異論を挟ませないのです。
