1971年6月19日、イタリアはブレシア。2日間滞在したこのイタリア2DAYSのうち20日のローマ公演音源は割とその存在が知られていますが、19日のブレシア公演はさほど馴染みが無いのではないでしょうか。一応この日はGodfatherレーベルの『AN ITALIAN TALE (G.R. 736/737)』を初めとする海外メーカーのタイトルやファン・メイドのタイトルが多数流通しているほか、アナログ盤としても往年の『LIVE IN BRESCIA 20/6/71 (Frog Records BP 0013 A/D ※ピクチャーディスクもあり)』を初め、2012年には41周年記念盤と銘打った3枚組のカラー・ヴィニールLPにカラー・ポスターやインサート入りの『BRESCIA 19 GIUGNO – ORE 21.30 (POTG 17 A/B/C/D/E/F) 』が300枚限定の貴重なコレクターズ・アイテムとして登場するなど、主にヨーロッパで多くタイトルがリリースされ人気を博しています。

ただこれら既発盤は全てRecorder 1を使用しており、ジェネレーションの違いによって音質に差はあれどどれも同一のソースが使用されていたのが現状です。しかしつい先日の2月半ば、ネット上にこの日の模様をリール・テープで録音した世界初登場のRecorder 2が超高音質マスター・サウンドで登場し、世界中のファンの度肝を抜きました。ポータブル・レコーダー” Geloso G570 “を使ってスコッチ製のリールテープに記録されていたその音質はもはや驚異的と言うしか無いほど鮮烈で、しかもこれまで聴けなかった初登場シーンが幾つも含まれていたのです。そのひとつが本ディスク冒頭で聴ける場内のイタリア語アナウンスによるバンド紹介シーンでしょう。ここで既にリール特有のマッシヴで抜けの良いサウンドが拡がって期待値がレッドゾーンを越えてしまうのですが、更なるトピックとして通常のAUD録音では有り得ない、異様に近過ぎる音に卒倒しそうになるのです。それは何故なのか。

実はこのRecorder 2、確かに場内で収録したAUD録音ではあるものの録音位置が通常の観客席ではないのです。それは最前列より更に手前に設置された特別区域、つまりバンド公認のカメラマンやプレス関係者だけが入る事・移動する事を許された特別なセクションから録られているのです。その距離、ステージから僅か2メートル。この通常有り得ない絶好の位置にレコーダーとマイクが置かれ、フロント・ロウそのものの音圧直撃感と音の近さと鮮明さを併せ持った状態で現場の音が封じ込められていたのです!!

ただその一方で欠点が無かった訳ではありません。残念な事に幾つかのシーンで部分的な経年劣化が発生しているうえ、ショウ後半の3曲が失われた(※ 恐らくテープの残量切れ)状態で残された不完全収録音源だったのです。しかしそこはこれまでの主力ソースだったRecorder 1の出番、通常でも充分な質の高さを誇るRecorder 1ですが今回はその中でも最高の音質を誇る” 3rd gen stratcat58 tapes “を補填素材に使う事で最良のリカバリが実現したのです。これによって高音質の新発掘リール・マスター音源を最大限に生かし、欠落部をRecorder 1 / 3rd gen stratcat58 tapesバージョンで補うという驚異的な音質と量感を誇る71年ブレシアをプレス盤に封じ込める事に成功しました。勿論Sigmaレーベル初登場、世界最速にして最高の姿での初音盤化です!!!

この音質の良さと音の近さ…もう本当に尋常ではありません。「Atom Heart Mother」は部分的な劣化が生じている事で2:03～18、及び12:20～35をRecorder 1で補填していますが非常に彫りの深い音で登場し、細部まで見極められる超至近音と驚異的な解像度・高音質に卒倒されるでしょう。興味深い事に補填されたRecorder 1からRecorder 2に戻る2:18直後、こうした録音ではあまり馴染みの無いゴソゴソする音が聴こえるのです。その音から察するとどうやら周囲を硬いもの(壁？金属？)で覆われた狭い荷物庫の中に録音機が置かれているらしく、この音からも通常想定される録音環境では無い生々しい録音ドキュメンタリーが伺えるのです。ちなみにこの奇妙な音は「Careful With That Axe, Eugene」の終曲直前でも登場する(※ 録音機を囲んでいる硬い何かが軋む音が入っている)のですが、聴きどころは勿論Recorder 1を超える楽曲全体の音質の良さです。あまりにも音が近くて困惑するほど鮮明なAUD録音はますます冴え渡り、特にハイハットの刻みなどはマイクから拾った音と言うよりは目の前で鳴っている生の音の振動を捉えていると書いた方が正確にイメージが伝わるくらいで、聴感上の満足感を非常に高く満たしてくれるでしょう。「Fat Old Sun」も圧倒的な透明感と音の近さ、そして全帯域に渡っての出力のダイナミックさに一体何人の悶絶者が出るのか心配になってしまう位です。特に注目したいのはライドシンバルの音で、AUD録音でこれほど近い音で打音が鳴っている音像は殆どの方が未体験ではないでしょうか。ギターもまた近くでギラギラするほど眩しいサウンドを放射していますが、その音抜けの良さと出力のタフさは呆れるほど凄まじく、幾つかのシーンでは信じ難いほどの音色の陶酔と直撃感に身を焦がされるに違いありません。また消え入りそうな弱音が実に綺麗に録れている事も特筆しておきましょう。

ディスク2の「Embryo」はこの日、楽曲前半でボーカル・マイクが突然オフになる機材トラブルが約15秒間発生しているのですが(※ 1:41～56)、これも音が突然抜ける様子が超至近距離のリアル・サウンドで現れてびっくりされるでしょう。こうした現場感満点のサウンドがこの曲の特性、つまり言葉に出来ないものに音と響きで形を与えている様子を克明に伝えていますし、同時に演奏の表情が眼前でダイナミックかつ立体的に移り変わってゆく稀有なサウンド・ポテンシャルにも驚愕されると思います。そして「The Return Of The Son Of Nothing」ではその響きの軌跡と余韻に誰もが息を呑むでしょう。圧倒的な音圧と解像度で音の表情を捉え切っている中～低音域は飛躍するロマンチックなイメージの流動を見事に運んでくれますし、何より注目して戴きたいのは終曲に近い22:07～です。ここはコーダに向けて4人が各自ガイドボーカルを重ねてゆく様子が出てくるのですが、このシーンをこれだけの高解像度かつ間近な音で捉えたものはかつてどの公演のどの録音にも存在しなかった筈です。真新しい、未体験の音の視点で曲が感じられる稀有なその瞬間を是非御堪能下さい。

そんなRecorder 2の収録は「Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun」の前半で終わってしまうのですが、リール・マスターには前半の部分的なところまで音が残っています。
細かく書き出しますと

という具合です。この0:22～2:25という中途半端な区間にだけRecorder 2の音が現存しているのですが、これも波形1/1000でパーフェクト・アジャストしてRecorder 1とコンバインさせ、現存するRecorder 2の原音を全て使い切っています。約2分程度の区間ではあるものの最後までそのウルトラ級のサウンドは聴き手の心を激しく揺らしますし、Recorder 2からRecorder 1へ橋渡しされる姿もまた実に感動的で大きな聴きどころとなっています。勿論ここから先の3曲＝終演まではRecorder 1の独壇場となるのですが、このRecorder 1も今回極めて質の高いソースを使用して2020年最新のリマスターをSigmaが誇る敏腕エンジニアが施しました。「Cymbaline」ではエコーが掛かったデイヴの歌声を更に鮮明に描き出し、翌日のローマ公演でもそうしていた様にサビの部分の節回しを若干変えて歌っている姿も最良の姿で封じ込めています。「A Saucerful Of Secrets」も序盤から場内に充満してゆく奇怪な音の波動、またリズムが加わる事によって得られる中盤以降の推進力・曲想の拡がりを陶酔感満点の音像でブラッシュアップしておりますので、Recorder 1になってもディスクエンドまで質感高いサウンドが持続しているのです。

今週はこの6月19日のブレシア公演と同時に翌20日のローマ公演『ROME 1971 (Sigma 243)』も衝撃のアッパー・サウンドでSigmaから同時リリースされます(※ ローマもSigma初のプレス音盤化です!!)が、これで71年唯一のイタリア公演2DAYSが現時点最良の音質盤として出揃う事になりました。これはここから約1ヵ月後に控えた71年初来日・箱根アフロディーテと大阪で私達が受けた衝動を更に確かな道筋で辿れる事にも繋がってゆくため、その意味でも非常に重要な2タイトルとなる事は間違い無さそうです。是非この週末は本作と『ROME 1971 (Sigma 243)』をその手に取り、このサウンドの突き抜け感と知が満たされる興奮を御体験下さい。この時のフロイドが発していた未知の響きに驚嘆出来るSigma最新作です!!
