そんな本作に刻まれているのは「1971年９月18日モントルー公演」。その一部始終を収録した完全オーディエンス録音です。1971年と言えば、伝説の初来日や映画『LIVE AT POMPEII』など、文化史レベルの活躍を残した時期。その流れの中で本作はいかなるポジションなのか。各レッグの代表作と共に振り返ってみましょう。

これが1971年のPINK FLOYD。豪州から戻った彼らは『おせっかい』を完成させ、再びツアーへ。本作のモントルー公演はそんな「欧州#3」の初日にあたるコンサートでした。当店では各レッグとも可能な限りの名作でアーカイヴしておりますが、「欧州#3」は録音自体が稀少。本作はその代表作でもあるのです。

【２大録音を駆使して実現した完全アルバム】
前述のように、この日は「合唱／ブラス入りの原子心母」が実現したステージで、その記録は90年代初頭から広く知られる大定番。本稿に目を留められた方なら、何かしらの既発を体験されているのではないでしょうか。本作は、その最長・最高峰を大きく更新したアップグレード盤なのです。
今回最大のポイントは「最長」。このショウは２つの名記録が知られるのですが、本作はその両者を駆使し、史上初となる「ショウの完全体」を実現したのです。それでは、要となる２音源を整理しておきましょう。

●RECORDER 1（メイン音源）
・2000年代に発掘されたステレオ・オーディエンス録音。
・「Sennheiser製MD-421マイク＋Uher製4200リールデッキ」による録音で、この日を代表するベスト音源。

●RECORDER 2（補完用音源）
・スイスのFM局“Radio Suisse Romande”による放送音源（モノラル）。
・ラインではなくアンビエント・マイクで収録されており、３本のリールテープで録音したエアチェックが現存するベスト・マスターとされています。

……と、このようになっています。「RECORDER 1」「RECORDER 2」共に様々な既発があり、特に90年代から有名なのはモノラル放送音源「RECORDER 2」です。しかし、この「RECORDER　2」も実はサウンドボードではなく、クラシック音楽用のようにマイク収録されたもの。サウンド・クオリティ的には純然オーディエンスながらステレオで臨場感のある｢RECORDER 1」の方が一枚上でないでしょうか。この２録音はどちらもショウの全景を捉えてはいますが、厳密にはテープチェンジなどもあって完全ではありませんでした。本作は、頂点サウンドの「RECORDER 1」の不足パートを「RECORDER 2」で補っているわけです。
実際、その全長は驚異的。全11ヶ所が補完され、従来の「RECORDER 2」より約１分半、「RECORDER 1」より約６分も長いのです。しかも、単に曲間の歓声が長くなっているわけではない。11ヶ所の補完パートのうち７ヶ所が実演奏シーンであり、特に「原子心母」や「神秘」はそれぞれ１分半以上も長くなっている。冒頭でも触れた通り、この日の最大の魅力は「合唱／ブラス入りの原子心母」ですから、このアップグレードは極めて重要です。
もちろん、長さだけでなくサウンド自体も万全。何しろ本作を仕上げたのは、偏執的な制度で好評を博している「GRAF ZEPPELIN」。いつものように両音源とも1/1000秒の狂いも許さないピッチ／位相補正が施され、帯域分析を経た上でバランス調整されている。さらに言えば「RECORDER 1」も「RECORDER 2」もマイクによる空間録音ですし、「GRAF ZEPPELIN」は「現場音至上主義」。どちらの音源を磨き込んでも同じ「現場音」にたどり着くわけで、音源が切り替わるシーンでもステレオ・バランスの違和感さえ起こさないのです。

当店の既発『DEFINITIVE MONTREUX 1971（Sigma 144）』は「RECORDER 1」「RECORDER 2」をカップリングした４枚組。歴史的な２大録音を純度100％で楽しむ意味では、確かに今なお「definitive」です。本作はそれとは異なり、２大録音の融合によって「現場の完全再現」を実現したのです。意外にも見過ごされてきた盲点のフル・ライヴアルバム。史上初の醍醐味を永久保存するプレス２CDで存分にご堪能ください。

he legendary recording that has conveyed the precious “Chorus/Atomic Heart Mother with Brass” has been upgraded. The Daimyo edition, which has evolved into a complete version for the first time in history, is now available as a permanent preservation press 2CD.

[Montreux performance realized by Atomic Heart Mother with Brass] What is engraved on this work is “September 18, 1971 Montreux performance”. It is a complete audience recording that includes the whole story. Speaking of 1971, it was a time when they left a mark on the level of cultural history, including their legendary first visit to Japan and the movie “LIVE AT POMPE II.” What position does this work play in this flow? Let’s take a look back at each leg’s masterpieces.

This is PINK FLOYD in 1971. After returning from Australia, they completed “Meddle” and went on tour again. The Montreux performance of this work was the first day of such “Europe #3” concert. Our store archives each leg with as many masterpieces as possible, but the recording itself of “Europe #3” is rare. This work is also a representative work.

[Complete album realized by making full use of two major recordings] As mentioned above, this day was the stage where “Atom Heart Mother with Chorus/Brass” was realized, and that record has been a widely known classic since the early 1990s. If you have been paying attention to this article, you may have experienced something similar. This work is an upgraded version that significantly updates its longest and highest peak.
The biggest point this time is “longest”. This show is known for two great records, but this work makes full use of both of them to realize the first “complete show” in history. Now, let’s organize the two key sound sources.

●RECORDER 1 (main sound source)
・Stereo audience recording discovered in the 2000s.
・Recorded with “Sennheiser MD-421 microphone + Uher 4200 reel deck”, the best sound source representing this day.

●RECORDER 2 (complementary sound source)
・Broadcast sound source (monaural) by Swiss FM station “Radio Suisse Romande”.
-It was recorded with an ambient microphone rather than a line, and the air check recorded on three reel tapes is considered to be the best master in existence.

…and it looks like this. Both “RECORDER 1” and “RECORDER 2” have been released in various ways, and the most famous one since the 90s is the monaural broadcast sound source “RECORDER 2”. However, this “RECORDER 2” is actually not a sound board, but a microphone recorded like for classical music. In terms of sound quality, isn’t “RECORDER 1”, which is purely audience-oriented but has a sense of presence in stereo, one step better? Both of these two recordings captured the entire view of the show, but strictly speaking, there were tape changes and so on, so they were not perfect. This work compensates for the missing parts of Vertex Sound’s “RECORDER 1” with “RECORDER 2.”
In fact, its total length is astonishing. All 11 locations have been supplemented, making it approximately 1 and a half minutes longer than the previous “RECORDER 2” and approximately 6 minutes longer than “RECORDER 1″. Moreover, the cheers between songs are not simply getting longer. Of the 11 supplementary parts, 7 are actual performance scenes, with “Atom Heart Mother” and “Mystery” in particular each lasting over a minute and a half. As I mentioned at the beginning, the biggest attraction of this day was the “Chorus/Atomic Heart Mother with Brass”, so this upgrade is extremely important.
Of course, not only the length but also the sound itself is perfect. After all, this work was completed by GRAF ZEPPELIN, which is well-received for its paranoid system. As always, both sound sources are subjected to pitch/phase correction that does not allow deviations of even 1/1000 of a second, and the balance is adjusted after band analysis. Furthermore, both “RECORDER 1” and “RECORDER 2” are spatial recordings using microphones, and “GRAF ZEPPELIN” is “on-site sound supremacy”. No matter which sound source you refine, you will arrive at the same “on-site sound”, and even in scenes where the sound source changes, there will be no discomfort in the stereo balance.

Our already released “DEFINITIVE MONTREUX 1971 (Sigma 144)” is a 4-disc set that combines “RECORDER 1” and “RECORDER 2.” It is certainly still “definitive” in the sense that you can enjoy two historic recordings in 100% purity. This work is different from that, and has achieved a “complete reproduction of the scene” by combining two major recordings. A full live album with a blind spot that has been surprisingly overlooked. Please enjoy it to the fullest with the press 2CD that permanently preserves the real thrill for the first time in history.
