“Phantom MSG” was formed by leaving UFO / SCORPIONS and welcoming the young Billy Sheehan. The upgrade master of the precious studio recording is a new discovery of a miracle. Introducing a permanent storage press CD!
● The earliest MSG formed with Billy Sheehan
First of all, who is the “phantom MSG”? It was the initial lineup that existed in 1979, before the production of the debut work “The Michael Schenker Group”. Two Americans, Billy Sheehan (then TALAS) and Denny Carmassi (formerly MONTROSE), participated as a rhythm section in the golden combination “Michael & Gary Barden” that we are familiar with. ) Was a group of four. They entered the studio as a new band and started writing songs for their album debut. It was a super band for us who knew the activities of Billy and Carmassi later, but Michael at that time was in a bad condition due to the alcohol problem. It collapsed before it got on track.
Although it was such a “phantom MSG”, a studio demo was left behind. In particular, the five takes including the four unreleased songs recorded in the bonus of the remastered “God” are famous, and many people will be delighted with the formalization of the miracle. However, those five songs are not all left by “Phantom MSG”. In 1994, a longer demo was unearthed from the prestigious Bondage label. “Evidence of the sound of the phantom MSG” reigned as a must-have masterpiece for collectors.
● A completely different dimension of new excavation upgrade master
The introduction has become long, but it is such a long demo that is permanently preserved in this work. However, even though the performance itself is the same as the conventional Bondage label board, it is a super upgrade master whose sound is incredibly good.
The source of this work was a master tape brought from an original overseas route, but what flowed out of it was a completely different dimension of sound. The Bondage label is, to put it bluntly, a “thank you for listening” type. His noise is applied to the whole, and the performance sound itself is undeniably stiff. There were some random tape twists and patches. However, this new excavation master has few such drawbacks. It’s a beautiful sound (again, it’s a different demo in terms of performance) that is close to the bonus track of “God”. Speaking of upgrades, you may imagine polishing with remastering, but even with any modern digital technology, it is impossible to upgrade as much as this work. The difference between the masters is another dimension that makes me realize once again whether it is so decisive.
● Collision of super-individuality that is bare because it is earlier than the official demo
The studio recording by a miracle super band is drawn with such a completely reincarnated sound. The official demo of the remastered “God” was at the stage when the appearance as a song was in place, but this work is earlier. It’s like a 9-take jam recording, of which 3 takes (Jam # 7, # 8, # 9) are Gary’s songs. This is a treasure that is not in the official demo and is still unpublished.
And the remaining 6 takes are instrumental in the trio. It’s like growing a song by jamming with the riffs and phrases that Michael thought about. As a result, you can listen to the eggs of “Looking Out From Nowhere” and “Feels Like A Good Thing” recorded in “God”, and the four unreleased songs “Just A Lover”, “Breakout” and “Breakout” that saw the light of day on the remastered version. You can also enjoy “Tales Of Mystery” and “Get Up And Get Down” in a more primitive version.
This is already wonderful. Even though it’s in the jam stage … No, it’s the individuality of the player that is delicious because it’s jam. The guitar sound is undeniably “that V”, and the ticking time and a little obli are perfect Michael marks. Moreover, the brilliant “Michael” who is directly connected to “Space Conquest” and “God”. And it is irresistible because it is “that Billy” that is involved there. It’s a demo for composition, so it’s not a battle mode like DAVID LEE ROTH BAND or MR. BIG, but even so, it doesn’t just play the root, and it’s a flood of singing phrases. Contrast phrases and variations that provide ideas for Michael’s motifs are constantly being poured. Pete Way also had a prominent melody sense, but Billy wasn’t that much.
Of course, even with Carmassi, the idea of side dishes is provided in serious mode, not in work mode. The groove reminiscent of later HEART and COVERDALE / PAGE is also wonderful, and maybe it was more suitable than Simon Phillips and Cozy Powell … I am showing off the drumming driven by such a delusion.
Anyway, it is a miracle demo album that has been upgraded to a completely different class. Since the appearance of the official demo, I haven’t had many chances to hear “It’s jam anyway …”, but the sound has improved, and the sense of super players has fully blossomed. Rather, jam is more interesting! It has evolved into a listening response.

●ビリー・シーンと結成された最初期MSG
まず「幻のMSG」とは何者なのか。それはデビュー作『神（帰ってきたフライング・アロウ）』の制作前となる1979年に存在していた初期ラインナップでした。私たちのよく知る黄金コンビ「マイケル＆ゲイリー・バーデン」を軸にしつつ、そこにリズム隊として参加していたのは、２人の米国人ビリー・シーン（当時TALAS）とデニー・カーマッシ（元MONTROSE）という４人組でした。彼らは新バンドとしてスタジオに入り、アルバム・デビューに向けて曲作りを開始。後のビリーやカーマッシの活躍を知る私たちにとってはヨダレの出るスーパー・バンドだったわけですが、当時のマイケルはアルコール問題によって絶不調。軌道に乗る前に崩壊してしまいました。
そんな「幻のMSG」ではありますが、わずかながらにスタジオ・デモが残された。特にリマスター盤『神』のボーナスに収録された４つの未発表曲を含む５テイクは有名で、奇跡の公式化に歓喜された方も多いことでしょう。ただし「幻のMSG」が残したのは、あの５曲がすべてではありません。1994年に名門Bondageレーベルからさらに長尺のデモが発掘。「幻MSGの音の証拠」コレクター必携の名作として君臨しました。
●丸っきり別次元の新発掘アップグレード・マスター
前置きが長くなってしまいましたが、本作に永久保存されているのは、そんな長尺デモ。ただし、従来のBondageレーベル盤と演奏自体は同じであっても、サウンドがケタ違いに良い超アップグレード・マスターなのです。
本作の元になっているのは海外の独自ルートからもたらされたマスター・テープなのですが、そこから流れ出したのは完全に別次元のサウンドでした。Bondageレーベル盤はハッキリ言ってしまえば「聴けるだけありがたい」タイプ。全体にヒス・ノイズがかかり、演奏音自体もゴワゴワ感が否めない。ところどころテープヨレやパッチのランダムな狂いもありました。ところが、今回の新発掘マスターはそうした欠点がほとんどない。それこそ、『神』のボーナス・トラックに迫るほどの美麗サウンド（繰り返しますが、演奏的には別デモです）なのです。アップグレードと言うと、リマスターでの磨き込みを想像される方もいらっしゃるかも知れませんが、いかな現代のデジタル技術でも加工で本作ほどのアップは不可能。マスター違いは、ここまで決定的なのかと改めて実感する別次元ぶりです。
●公式デモより初期だからこそ丸出しな超個性のぶつかり合い
そんな完全生まれ変わりサウンドで描かれるのは、奇跡のスーパーバンドによるスタジオ録音。リマスター盤『神』の公式デモは曲としての体裁も整ってきた段階でしたが、本作はもっと初期。９テイクのジャム録音という感じで、そのうち３テイク（Jam #7・#8・#9）がゲイリーの歌入り。これは公式デモにもなく、現在でも未発表のままな秘宝です。
そして、残り６テイクは他はトリオでのインスト。マイケルが考えたリフやフレーズをモチーフにジャムり、曲を育てていくような感じ。結果として『神』に収録される「Looking Out From Nowhere」「Feels Like A Good Thing」の卵も聴けますし、リマスター盤で日の目を見た未発表４曲「Just A Lover」「Breakout」「Tales Of Mystery」「Get Up And Get Down」もさらにプリミティヴなバージョンで楽しめます。
これがもう素晴らしいのなんの。ジャム段階とは言っても……いや、ジャムだからこそ美味しいのが丸出しになるプレイヤーの個性。ギター・サウンドは紛れもなく「あのＶ」ですし、刻みのタイム感もちょっとしたオブリも完全なマイケル印。しかも『宇宙征服』『神』に直結する、才気走った「あのマイケル」。そして、そこに絡むのが「あのビリー」なのだからたまらない。さすがに作曲用デモですからDAVID LEE ROTH BANDやMR. BIGのようなバトル・モードではありませんが、そうは言っても単なるルート弾きは一切せず、歌心フレーズの大洪水。マイケルのモチーフに対してアイディアを提供するような対比フレーズや変奏案が絶え間なく注ぎ続けていくのです。ピート・ウェイも突出したメロディ・センスでしたが、ビリーはその比ではありません。
もちろん、カーマッシにしてもお仕事モードではなく、本気モードでオカズのアイディアをガンガン提供。後のHEARTやCOVERDALE/PAGEを彷彿とさせるグルーヴも素晴らしく、もしかしたらサイモン・フィリップスやコージー・パウエルより適役だったのかも知れない……そんな妄想にまで駆られるドラミングを披露しています。
とにかく完全別物級にアップグレードした奇跡のデモ・アルバムです。公式デモの登場以来「どうせジャムだし……」と聞く機会も少なくなっていましたが、音が良くなったことでスーパー・プレイヤー達のセンスが全面開花。むしろ、ジャムの方が面白い！というほどの聴き応えに進化しているのです。

★ビリー・シーン／デニー・カーマッシと結成された幻ラインナップのスタジオ・デモ・アルバム。『神』のリマスター盤ボーナスとはまったく異なる初期デモです。既発ブートレッグも存在しますが、本作は独自ルートで新発掘された超アップグレード・マスター。サウンドは比較にならないほど良くなっており、マイケル／ビリーの天才２人が止めどなくアイディアをぶつけ合うジャムが極上サウンドで炸裂する。リマスター盤『神』でも聴けない歌入り未発表曲も２曲３テイク楽しめます。
