This work was shot at “Reggio Emilia performance on September 12, 1992”. It is a multi-camera pro shot recorded in the Italian performance of “MONSTERS OF ROCK Tour” which was becoming established as a festival tour in Europe. This year, IRON MAIDEN, who had made a big hit with “FEAR OF THE DARK”, served as the headliner, and BLACK SABBATH, who returned Ronnie James Dio, acted as a quasi-tri, and MEGADETH participated as a position next to them. .. Also, speaking of “countdown to extinction”, Mustaine’s drug addiction recurred, even though it was the greatest chance in history to catch up with his nemesis METALLICA. This is MEGADETH in 1992/1993. The tour started in Europe, with the news of the second place in the United States. The Reggio Emilia performance of this work was also the kick-off performance. As expected, the image quality / resolution has an analog feel, but the master freshness is certainly the highest ever. As a matter of fact, this broadcast is said to be the best in terms of quality, and tracking noise and distortion were commonplace. However, there are almost no such dubbing marks in this work. It’s a little confusing to say “completely official class!” Because there is a slight ruggedness peculiar to Italian broadcasting, but the “not good image” so far is a superb master that has been completely wiped out. is.
The upgrade master depicts the four climaxes who radiate the band potential that created “Countdown to Extinction” on stage. Speaking of the representative video of this tour, the Hammersmith performance pro shot formalized in the box “WARCHEST” is the most famous, but the set of this work is similar and different. It is clear that the policy was established from this work on the first day. And the new style is especially useful in the new songs of “Countdown to Extinction”. As expected, the audience was surprised only by the intro because it was a big hit, and even in the big classic “Sweating Bullets”, the style of singing while laughing creates a fresh and crazy mood. The fresh reaction and the performance that directs the song world to an excessive degree are completely different from the present.
It is regrettable to return it. It was really a pity that the “COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION Tour” was interrupted. Even if they are the same members, the same magic does not occur. If we went around the world with the same performance as this work, we might have been able to really overtake METALLICA … The show is unbelievably unfolding. そんな本作が撮影されたのは「1992年９月12日レッジョ・エミリア公演」。欧州のフェス・ツアーとして定着しつつあった“MONSTERS OF ROCK Tour”のイタリア公演で収められたマルチカメラ・プロショットです。この年は『FEAR OF THE DARK』を大ヒットさせていたIRON MAIDENがヘッドライナー、ロニー・ジェイムズ・ディオを復帰させたBLACK SABBATHが準トリを務め、MEGADETHは彼らに次ぐポジションとして参加していました。また、『破滅へのカウントダウン』と言えば宿敵METALLICAに追いつく史上最大のチャンスでありながら、ムステインの薬物中毒が再発。ツアー途中で活動停止となってしまった事でも有名な時代でした。まずは、その流れを振り返り、ショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが1992年／1993年のMEGADETH。全米２位の報に沸く中、ツアーはヨーロッパからスタート。本作のレッジョ・エミリア公演は、そのキックオフ公演でもありました。先述した薬物中毒の再発は、ツアーが進む中で服用した咳止めシロップがきっかけ。本作は初日だけあって、そんな未来が待っているとは知りもしないタイミングだったのです。
そんなショウは大規模フェスだけにTVでも放送。そのエアチェックが数々の既発群を生み出して来た大定番です。本作も同じTV放送プロショットなのですが、その中でもベストとして知られるマスターをDVD化したもの。さすがに画質／解像度にはアナログ感覚もありますが、マスター鮮度は確かに過去最高峰。実のところ、この放送はクオリティ的に今イチと言われ、トラッキング・ノイズも歪みも当たり前でした。ところが、本作にがそうしたダビング痕がほとんどない。イタリア放送特有のゴワゴワ感がわずかに残っているために「完全オフィシャル級！」と断じるのには些か迷いますが、これまでの「今いちイメージ」は完全に払拭された極上マスターなのです。
そんなアップグレード・マスターで描かれるのは『破滅へのカウントダウン』を創り上げたバンド・ポテンシャルをステージで発散させる絶頂の４人。このツアーの代表映像と言えば、ボックス『WARCHEST』で公式化されたハマースミス公演プロショットが一番有名ですが、本作のセットは似て非なるもの。比較しながら整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。フェス用のショート・セットということもあってレア曲の類はありませんが、ハマースミス公演プロショットよりも新曲重視。しかも、その新曲こそが最大の見どころなのです。何しろ１つ前の“RUST IN PEACE Tour”までの彼らはアルバムを大きく超える爆走テンポでブチかますスラッシャーだったわけですが、このツアーからアルバム通りのテンポでじっくり迫る現行スタイルに転換。初日の本作からその方針が確立していたのがはっきりと分かる。そして、その新スタイルが特に活きるのが『破滅へのカウントダウン』の新曲群。さすがに大ヒット中だけあって観客はイントロだけで驚喜していますし、大定番となっていく「Sweating Bullets」にしても笑いながら歌うスタイルが新鮮で狂気じみたムードを醸している。そのフレッシュな反応も、過剰なまでに曲世界を演出するパフォーマンスも、現在とはまるで違っているのです。
返す返すも惜しい。“COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION Tour”が中断してしまったのは本当に痛恨でした。たとえ同じメンバーであっても、同じマジックは起きない。このまま、本作と同じパフォーマンスのまま全世界を巡っていれば、本当にMETALLICAを追い越すこともできたかも知れない……そう思えてならないほどのショウが繰り広げられているのです。そんな一世一代の絶頂ポテンシャルを目撃できるプロショットの最高峰更新マスター。どうぞ、存分にお楽しみください。
