The foamy super unit LONE RANGER, which evolved from Jeff Watson’s solo album and became the mother of that MOTHERS ARMY. The original recording that allows you to experience the best performance in Japan, which is said to be a phantom, is released for the first time in the world!
“September 15, 1992: Nagoya Bottom Line Performance” is imbued with this work. It is the transcendental audience recording. Introducing this work must start with the true identity of “LONE RANGER”. This name was a new band taken from Jeff’s 1st solo album “LONE RANGER” released after the dissolution of NIGHT RANGER. However, the contents are completely different. The solo album was a so-called guitar instrument, but the band that I formed after that included vocals. With David Glen Eisley (formerly GIUFFRIA) on the front, Bob Daisley on bass and Carmine Appice on drums was a super band full of great arms. As you may have noticed, this lineup is “MOTHERS ARMY with a different singer” itself. In other words, Joe Lynn Turner joined this LONE RANGER and renamed it “MOTHERS ARMY”.
Don’t underestimate here, “What is it, an amateur?” Actually, the main character behind this work is this Willy. He’s actually an insanely clever phantom singer! The singing voice could be likened to “soulful Sammy Hagar”. His voice quality and moderation are similar to Sammy, and his way of taking time and scat singing are reminiscent. He doesn’t push as high tones as Sammy, but on the other hand, he may be better than Sammy in his singing ability to master the vibrato that trembles like a soul singer. Of course, Sammy is a metaphor and Willy is not a mimic. The lazy scat is like Robert Plant, and the gentle phrases are so sexy that no one can compare them. While pretending to be Joe Lynn Turner’s personal fan, it’s still a spectacular vocalization that makes me wonder, “Isn’t MOTHERS ARMY better for Willie?” [Willy Seltzer’s version of MOTHERS ARMY full show] That kind of emotion comes to me because the live itself is “Willie’s version of MOTHERS ARMY”. …… And it looks like this. There are only two songs from NIGHT RANGER, and more than half of the show is new songs from “MOTHERS ARMY” and the 2nd solo “AROUND THE SUN”. Of course, neither work has been produced, let alone released, and the audience is full of numbers that they have never heard. However, the audience of this work listened to each song enthusiastically and returned a hot reaction. And it’s also a wonderful performance that is not strange. That’s why I wonder, “Isn’t MOTHERS ARMY better for Willie?”
Well, I didn’t really focus on the new song. In addition to NIGHT RANGER, the covers “I Don’t Know” and “Hot Legs” are also shown as fun for fans. Especially interesting is “I Don’t Know”. Jeff probably chose it for Bob, but Carmine is also a former Ozzy band. We have also introduced the live album of OZZY OSBOURNE during the Carmine era, and that wonderful rhythm work has been revived wonderfully. And here too, Willy is amazing. “I Don’t Know” is completely different from the nopperi Ozzy and is decorated with vibrato and dos of various sizes. The gorgeous song has evolved the song itself into something else.
Anyway, it’s amazing. It’s too amazing. Not only is the band itself extremely rare, but everyone is a master, and the performance in serious mode, which is not play, is exploding. There is a phantom singing that cannot be heard anywhere else, and all of it is drawn with transcendental sound. I wrote “I want you to collect it side by side with the official works”, but I will stop. I would like to say that this is more amazing than the genuine official work “MOTHERS ARMY”. With such a throat, where and what is Willy Seltzer doing now …? It’s a super-masterpiece because it’s an underground that makes you realize even the reality that you can’t succeed with talent alone. ジェフ・ワトソンのソロアルバムから発展し、あのMOTHERS ARMYの母体ともなった泡沫のスーパー・ユニットLONE RANGER。幻とも言われた来日公演を極上体験できるオリジナル録音が全世界初公開です！
そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1992年９月15日：名古屋ボトムライン公演」。その超絶級オーディエンス録音です。本作をご紹介するのは、まず「LONE RANGER」の正体から始めなければなりません。この名前はジェフがNIGHT RANGER解散後にリリースした1stソロアルバム『LONE RANGER』から取った新バンドでした。ただし、中身はまったく違う。ソロアルバムはいわゆるギター・インスト物でしたが、その後に組んだバンドはヴォーカル入り。デヴィッド・グレン・アイズレー（元GIUFFRIA）をフロントに据え、ベースにはボブ・デイズリー、ドラムにはカーマイン・アピスというスゴ腕だらけのスーパー・バンドだったのです。もうお気づきかと思いますが、このラインナップは「シンガー違いのMOTHERS ARMY」そのもの。つまり、このLONE RANGERにジョー・リン・ターナーが合流し、改名したのが「MOTHERS ARMY」というわけなのです。
【超有名人軍団＋幻シンガーによる激レアライヴ】
話が先に進みすぎました。本作の主役は「MOTHERS ARMY」ではなく、あくまで「LONE RANGER」。ジョーが加入する前に実現した来日公演のライヴアルバムです。ただし、歌っているのはデヴィッド・グレン・アイズレーではない。実は、結成したてのLONE RANGERは、さっそく来日公演も決定したのですが、実際に指導する前になって今イチ乗り気でなかったアイズレーが脱退。新シンガーにウィリー・セルツァーを迎えて来日したのです。「ウィリー……誰？」と思われるでしょうが、それも無理はない。ウィリー・セルツァーにはほとんどキャリアらしいキャリアがない。かつてエリック・マーティンが在籍していた「415」なるバンドにエリックの後任として加入したことはあるのですが、残念ながら録音はなし。LONE RANGER後も目立った活動がなく、公式作品としては『MOTHERS ARMY』のバックヴォーカルにクレジットされているだけなのです。
ここで「なんだ、ド素人か」と侮るなかれ。実は、本作の陰の主人公は、このウィリー。実は、めっちゃくちゃ巧い幻の名シンガーなのです！ その歌声を喩えるなら「ソウルフルなサミー・ヘイガー」といったところでしょうか。声質も節回しもサミーに似ており、間の取り方、スキャット遣いも彷彿とさせる。サミーほどハイトーンで押しまくるわけではないのですが、その一方でソウルシンガーばりに細かく震えるようなヴィヴラートまで使いこなす歌唱力はサミー以上かも知れない。もちろん、サミーは喩えであってウィリーはモノマネ師ではない。気だるいスキャットではロバート・プラントっぽくもあり、穏やかなフレーズは喩える人が浮かばないほどセクシー。ジョー・リン・ターナーの個人的なファンだと前置きしつつ、それでもなお「MOTHERS ARMYはウィリーの方が良かったんじゃないか？」と思わずにいられないほど見事なヴォーカリゼーションなのです。
【ウィリー・セルツァー版MOTHERS ARMYとなるフルショウ】
そんな感慨が浮かぶのも、ライヴ自体が「ウィリー版MOTHERS ARMY」だからに他なりません。その意味をご説明するためにも、ここでセットリストも整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。なんとNIGHT RANGERからはたった２曲だけで、ショウの半分以上が『MOTHERS ARMY』や2ndソロ『AROUND THE SUN』からの新曲。もちろん、両作ともリリースどころか制作されてもおらず、観客は一切聴いた事がないナンバーだらけなのです。ところが、本作の観客は１曲１曲を熱心に聴き入り、熱い反応を返している。そして、それが不思議ではないほど見事な演奏でもある。だから「MOTHERS ARMYはウィリーの方が良かったんじゃないか？」と思ってしまうのです。
ただまあ、さすがに新曲一辺倒とはしなかった。ファンへのお楽しみとしてNIGHT RANGERの他にカバー「I Don’t Know」「Hot Legs」も披露しています。特に面白いのは「I Don’t Know」でしょう。ジェフとしてはボブのために選んだのでしょうが、実はカーマインも元オジー・バンド。当店ではカーマイン時代OZZY OSBOURNEのライヴアルバムもご紹介してきましたが、あの素晴らしいリズムワークが見事に甦っている。そして、ここでもウィリーが凄い。ノッペリしたオジーとはまるで違って大小様々な幅のヴィヴラートやドスで装飾しまくった「I Don’t Know」。そのゴージャスな歌いっぷりは、曲そのものをまるで別物に進化させているのです。
【公式サウンドボード級の超絶サウンド】
あまりの素晴らしさにすっかり書き損じていましたが、そんなショウを伝えるサウンドも超絶！ 最近、当店ではオリジナルの名古屋録音を多数ご紹介していますが、本作はその最新弾。しかも、名古屋コレクションでも最高傑作となる１本なのです。その芯が極太で距離感などまるでなく、ヘッドフォンで耳を澄ませてもホール鳴りが感じ取れないほどタイト。それほどド密着でありながらビビらない安定感も抜群ときたもんだ。30年前の録音ではあるのですが、まるで西日本最強テーパー氏の最新録音かのようです（あくまで喩え。実際には別人の作です）。
とにかく凄い。凄すぎる。バンド自体が激レアなだけでなく全員が達人であり、しかもお遊びではない本気モードの演奏が爆発している。そこに他では聴けない幻の名唱が乗り、そのすべてが超絶サウンドで描かれるのです。「オフィシャル作品と並べてコレクションして欲しい」と書きかけましたが、止めます。これはもう、正真正銘のオフィシャル作『MOTHERS ARMY』より凄いと言い切りたいです。これほどのノドを持ちながら、ウィリー・セルツァーは今頃どこで何をしているのだろう……。才能だけでは成功できない現実さえ思い知らされるアンダーグラウンドだからこその超名盤。どうぞ、刮目してご体験ください！
