Report of “Mike Millard’s Omoto Master Excavation” that ran around the world in 2020. Right now, superb records are popping up one after another, and the impact is steadily expanding rather than fading with each passing moment. From such a new excavation collection, another treasure is born. Linda Ronstadt’s superb live album is here.
This work was recorded at “October 22, 1990 Costa Mesa Performance”. It is the best audience recording. Speaking of Mike Millard, it is famous for recording in the 70’s, but this work is a work in the 90’s. He himself died in 1994, but current research confirms that he had recorded until 1992, and this work is one of those late collections. Also, in this excavation of Omoto Master, the upgrade of existing recordings has become a hot topic, but at the same time, the recording that first appeared at all is also a shock. This work is the latter, and it is a mirrored recording that has not been known until now.
I repeated mirrored and mirrored, but the most important thing is the show itself. At that time, singles co-starring with Aaron Neville were hit one after another, and the album “CRY LIKE A RAINSTORM, HOWL LIKE THE WIND” was also in the top 10 in the United States for the first time in a while (and the last). This is Linda in 1990. The album was released in October 1989, but the tour was only held in North America from August 1990. The Costa Mesa performance of this work was a concert at the end of “North America # 3”. I hesitate to bother to say that this work, which is a vacuum-packed show, is the best. After all, it’s a collection of legendary recorders, so it’s natural that it’s the best. It is natural that the strength of the core that reaches straight at hand, the clear outline and fine details, and the direct feeling that does not feel a sense of distance are all available. Of course, it’s not the type called “sound board”. This is not a drawback, but rather a compliment. The sound that drifts to elegance is forever beautiful, and the lively delight of the site is real.
The guitar feels even the nuances of picking, the swell of the bass and the drums … No, it can’t be helped to talk one by one. If I dare to mention it, is it Linda’s singing voice? Not only one word of the lyrics, but also the emotions contained in one syllable ooze out, and the fine width of the vibrato is also sung and the nuances of the moment disappearing are clear. Moreover, it is real. You can even feel the breathing that emanates in front of you, while spreading to every corner of the venue. It even has a sense of reality that you want to call “real voice.”

2020年に世界を駆け巡った“マイク・ミラードの大元マスター発掘”の報。今まさに次々と超極上の記録が次々と飛び出し、衝撃は刻を経るごとに薄れるどころか拡大の一途を辿っています。そんな新発掘コレクションから、また１つの秘宝が誕生。リンダ・ロンシュタットの超極上ライヴアルバムが登場です。
そんな本作が記録されたのは「1990年10月22日コスタ・メサ公演」。その極上オーディエンス録音です。マイク・ミラードと言えば、何よりも70年代の録音で有名なのですが、本作は90年代の作品。彼自身は1994年に亡くなっておりますが、現在のリサーチでは1992年まで録音していた事が確認されており、本作はそんな後期コレクションの１つなのです。また、今回の大元マスター発掘では、既存録音のアップグレードも話題となっておりますが、同時にまったくの初登場録音も衝撃となっている。本作は後者で、これまで知られてこなかったミラード録音なのです。
ミラード、ミラードと繰り返してしまいましたが、もっとも重要なのはショウそのもの。当時はアーロン・ネヴィルとの共演シングルが次々とヒットし、アルバム『CRY LIKE A RAINSTORM, HOWL LIKE THE WIND』も久々の（そして最後の）全米トップ10入りを果たしていた時期。まずは、そんな当時のスケジュールからポジションを振り返ってみましょう。

これが1990年のリンダ。アルバムは1989年10月にリリースされつつ、ツアーが行われたのは翌1990年の８月から北米のみ。本作のコスタ・メサ公演は「北米#3」終盤のコンサートでした。そんなショウを真空パックした本作は極上……と、わざわざ言うのも躊躇われる。何しろ、あの伝説の録音家コレクションなのですから極上なのは当たり前。まっすぐ手元に届く芯の力強さも、クッキリとした輪郭や細やかなディテールも、距離感を感じないダイレクト感も、すべて揃っていて当然なのです。もちろん「まるでサウンドボード」と呼ぶタイプでもない。これは欠点ではなく、むしろ賛辞。気品まで漂わせる鳴りはどこまでも美しく、生々しい現場の歓喜がリアルこの上ないのです。
ギターはピッキングのニュアンスまで感じられ、ベースのうねりやドラムの……いやいや、もう１つずつ語っても仕方がない。あえて特筆するなら、やはりリンダの歌声でしょうか。歌詞の１語のどころか１音節に込められた感情まで滲み出し、ヴィヴラートの細かな幅も歌いきって消えていく刹那のニュアンスまで鮮明。しかも、リアル。目の前で発せられた息づかいまで感じられ、その一方で会場の隅々まで広がっていく。まさに「肉声」と呼びたい現実感まで宿っているのです。
そんなサウンドで描かれるのは、最後の全盛期とも言うべきフルショウ。ここでセットの内容も整理しておきましょう。
