The sound board recording of “April 30, 1977 Bolton University Performance” is included in this work. Speaking of 1977, the year when Rudy Lenners’ alternate drama to Herman Rarebell and the last masterpiece of the Uli Jon Roth era, “TAKEN BY FORCE,” were released. The history of the early SCORPIONS was also the dawn of continental European hard rock. That should be the case, and it wasn’t until 1979, after joining Matthias Jabs, that they made their first trip to the United States. I had never performed live outside of Europe until my first visit to Japan in 1978. In the above case, the multilateral schedule is “Europe”, and this work was the 20th performance of “Europe # 3”.
This work recorded at such a show is a real sound board that is full of freshness. Anyway, the strong direct feeling that the extra-thick, zero-distance core is poured directly into the brain is tremendous. That said, it’s not like an official live album, but the mix is ​​rough and raw. Of course, that’s also a beauty for soundboard enthusiasts, and you can enjoy a sense of synchronization with live performances that you can’t get on official live performances or major broadcasts.
In addition, this work also has a sense of presence that tends to be spoiled with such rare sound boards. The applause and applause of the audience who were present at the scene are also ultra-realistic. It’s so real that it’s hard to wonder, “Maybe it’s not a sound board, but a superb audience !?”, but the sound is too thick and thick for spatial recording. そんな本作に収められているのは「1977年４月30日ボルトン大学公演」のサウンドボード録音。1977年と言えば、ルディ・レナーズからハーマン・ラレベルへの交代劇やウリ・ジョン・ロート時代最後の傑作『TAKEN BY FORCE』が発売された年。また初期SCORPIONSの歩みは、大陸ヨーロッパ産ハードロックの夜明けそのものでもありました。良い機会ですので、当時のスケジュールから世界に羽ばたこうとしていた状況を探ってみましょう。

そんなショウで記録された本作は、生々しさ全開のリアル・サウンドボード。とにかく極太・ゼロ距離の芯が脳みそに直接流し込まれる強烈なダイレクト感が絶大なのです。だからと言って公式ライヴアルバム風ではなく、ミックスは荒々しく思いっきり生感覚。もちろん、それもサウンドボード・マニアにとっては美点でして、公式ライヴ盤やメジャー放送物では味わえない生演奏とのシンクロ感を味わえるのです。
また、本作はこうしたレア・サウンドボードではスポイルされがちな臨場感も備えている。現場に居合わせた観客達の拍手や喝采も超リアルなのです。あまりにリアルなために「もしかしてサウンドボードではなく、超極上オーディエンス!?」との疑念もよぎるほどなのですが、やはり空間録音にしては演奏音が骨太・肉厚すぎる。伝統的にサウンドボードで知られてきた録音でもありますので、当店でも伝統に従いたいと思います。
そんな極太の荒縄サウンドで描かれるのは『TOKYO TAPES』とも異なる“VIRGIN KILLER Tour”のフルショウ。ここでオフィシャル名盤と比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。初期SCORPIONS屈指の名曲ながら『TOKYO TAPES』では聴けなかった「Catch Your Train」や「They Need A Million」が聴けるだけで感無量……なのですが、それ以上なのがショウ全体を貫くウリ時代のパフォーマンスでしょう。『TOKYO TAPES』はもちろん無論、歴史的な大名盤ですが、本作はさらにド密着で超生々しい。クラブの最前席で手を伸ばせばクラウスに触れるんじゃないかと思うほどの間近感。その密室に轟くウリ・ロート節のカルト感と言ったら！　初期SCORPIONSは賛辞として「Ｂ級感」と評されたりもしますが、本作はそのニュアンスを煮詰めてに煮詰めて、黒光りするタールのように粘っこく濃厚にぶちまけられるのです。
ワールドワイドなスケール感なんて皆無。綺麗事なんぞヌキ。ハードロック未開の地であった西ドイツからねじ曲がったセンスと根性で這い上がってきたコアなライヴバンドの底力が全開のライヴアルバムです。後年のSCORPIONSとも、ウリのソロとも違う漆黒ハードロックの極地。脳みそド直結のサウンドボードで存分にご堪能ください！
