JETHRO TULL in 2022, which sent their first new studio work in 18 years, “THE ZEALOT GENE”, to 9th place in the UK, and embarked on a full-scale tour. The best recording that conveys the latest stage has arrived.
“Performance in Paris on November 17, 2022” is imbued in this work. It is the super-superb audience recording. JETHRO TULL, which was restarted in 2017, has been astonishing for the first time in recent years. It is the first time in 50 years since “THICK AS A BRICK” to enter the top 10 of the UK chart, and the live activity has been since 2011. Combined with the fulfillment of the album, I think no one could have imagined that they would make such a spectacular comeback. Even in the sense of knowing their recent situation, let’s first check from the overall image of the tour for the first time in 11 years.

This is the schedule for 2022/2023 that has been announced so far. Although it cannot be called a “world tour” because it is limited to Europe at the moment, it has already completed more than 60 performances. Next year’s schedule has been announced for each country, but it seems that the gaps will be filled from now on. Under such circumstances, the Paris performance of this work is one act of “Europe # 3” which should be called the main part of the tour. It was a concert corresponding to the 18th performance.
This work, which was recorded at such a show, is a super-tight recording that makes you doubt your ears, “This is the audience!?” Anyway, everything feels like zero distance. The guitar and bass are vivid to the picking nuances, and the drums are so clear that you can feel the vibration of the skin. And above all, vocals and flutes are intense. I can’t believe it’s a spatial recording through the atmosphere, with a feeling of breathing in my ears and a sense of closeness and detail that even the splashes of flying saliva appear in my eyes. Well, in fact, when the performance starts, the real excitement will rise, and if you listen with headphones, you can feel the audience (very slightly) in the tone of the vocals and drums. However, that is a story when searching for evidence of customer records with microscopic listening, and in terms of enjoying music normally, it is a sound board … No, it is a listening response that is no different from the official work group.
A full show of the British legend who has returned to the front line is depicted with such a super-class close-up sound. After all, it is the first load in 11 years, and this work is the first report of restart. I don’t have anything to compare it to, but let’s put the set in order here.

JETHRO TULL is a band that has always put together a variety of sets, and that tradition is still alive today, with three new songs scattered around, and a wide variety of classics. Of course, the deadly “Aqualung” and “Locomotive Breath” are selected, but the previous 60’s numbers are also thickly selected with 5 songs. As a regular set, “Love Story”, which has been absent for over 20 years, is also featured. Furthermore, “Black Sunday” and “Clasp” have been selected since the 1980s, and the latter regular performance is the first in 38 years.
“Anyway, shocking ultra-high sound quality.” Did the microphone recording in 2022 make such a sound possible? When will the official live album of the restarted JETHRO TULL be released? そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2022年11月17日パリ公演」。その超・極上オーディエンス録音です。2017年に再始動していたJETHRO TULLですが、このところの活躍ぶりには目を見張るばかり。全英チャートのトップ10入りは『THICK AS A BRICK』以来50年ぶりの快挙ですし、ライヴ活動も2011年以来。アルバムの充実ぶりも併せ、ここまで見事な復活を遂げるとは誰も想像できなかったのではないでしょうか。そんな彼らの近況を知る意味でも、まずは11年ぶりとなるツアーの全体像から確かめてみましょう。

これが現在までに公表されている2022年／2023年のスケジュール。今のところヨーロッパ限定のために「ワールド・ツアー」とは呼べませんが、現時点ですでに60公演以上を完遂。来年も国ごとに細切れの日程が公表されているものの、これから合間が埋まっていくと思われます。そんな中で本作のパリ公演はツアーの本編とも言うべき「欧州#3」の一幕。その18公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、「これがオーディエンス!?」と耳を疑う超タイト録音。とにかく、何もかもがゼロ距離感覚。ギターもベースもピッキング・ニュアンスまで鮮やかですし、ドラムも皮の振動を感じるほどに鮮明。そして何よりも強烈なのがヴォーカルとフルート。耳元に息遣いを感じ、飛ぶツバの飛沫まで目に浮かぶ密着感と細やかさは、大気を介した空間録音というのが信じられない。まあ、実際には開演時にリアルな采も沸き上がりますし、ヘッドフォンで耳を澄ませばヴォーカルやドラムの音色にオーディエンスっぽさが（極わずかに）感じられはする。しかし、それは顕微鏡的な聴き込みで客録の証拠探しをした場合の話であり、普通に音楽と楽しむ上ではサウンドボードと……いや、オフィシャル作品群となんら変わらない聴き応えなのです。
そんな超絶級ド密着サウンドで画かれるのは、第一線に返り咲いた英国レジェンドのフルショウ。何しろ11年ぶりのロードですし、本作は再始動の第一報。比較するものはありませんが、ここでセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。JETHRO TULLは常に多彩なセットを組んできたバンドであり、現在もその伝統は健在で、新曲３つを散りばめる一方、クラシックスも多種多様。必殺の「Aqualung」「Locomotive Breath」は当然ですが、それ以前の60年代ナンバーも５曲と厚めにセレクト。レギュラーセットとしては20年以上ご無沙汰だった「Love Story」も取り上げている。さらに80年代からも「Black Sunday」「Clasp」が選ばれており、後者のレギュラー演奏は38年ぶりです。
とにもかくにも、衝撃的な超・高音質。2022年のマイク録音は、こんなサウンドまで可能にしたのか……そんな思いまで沸き上がるスーパー・サウンドです。再始動JETHRO TULLの公式ライヴアルバがいつになるのか……と言いますか、そもそも作品化されるかも定かではありませんが、もし実現しなかったとしても本作があれば大丈夫。そんな次元に立つ，最先端サウンドの絶対盤。どうぞ、心ゆくまで存分に味わい尽くしてください。
