アルバム『THE PRETENDER』のリリースに際して初めてワールドツアーを敢行したジャクソン・ブラウン。12月にはヨーロッパを廻っているのですが、そこからの副産物として生み出されたのがBBCの音楽番組『OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST』への出演。
結果として1976年ツアーの（テレビスタジオでの収録ですが）プロショット映像が残されるという大変ありがたい存在に。元々76年ツアーは本人がワールドツアーを意識して初めて本格的なバックバンドを結成、それ故にいくつかのテレビ収録が行われたのですが、それらの中でも一番ポピュラーな存在としておなじみだった『OGWT』。
言うまでもなくVHSの時代から親しまれてきたマニアも少なくないかと思われますが、今回リリースするのはつい最近になってBBCがデジタル放送で公開した最新の再放送バージョン。
70年代『OGWT』の再放送バージョンと言えば翌年のクラプトンの出演『OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST 1977 HD: REBROADCAST 2023』がその鮮明画質で大センセーションを巻き起こしていますが、正にそのジャクソン・ブラウン版。

もっとも単純に演奏やライブアクトとしての完成度は今回同時リリースでスタープレイヤーたちをバックに従え、やはりBBCが放送した『COLUMBIA 1978』の圧勝となる訳ですが、まだバックバンドを従えたばかりの初々しい雰囲気が完璧すぎる画質で捉えられている。
この画質はあまりに鮮烈で、もうこのままプレスDVDでリリースされたとしても何ら遜色のないハイレベルなもの。大好評クラプトンの『OGWT』と同様、今回も圧巻のアッパー版へと生まれ変わってくれたのです。
デヴィッド・リンドレーも『COLUMBIA 1978』の時ほど圧倒的な存在感を放っておらず、あくまでバンドの一員といった佇まい。むしろここでは1976年当時の凛々しいジャクソンのルックスと歌声に釘付けになること請け合い。

『RUNNING ON EMPTY』でロッカーに進化する前の、まだ初期のアルバムの憂いをたたえた世界をそのままバンドに変換したようなジャクソンのステージがこれほどまでの画質で見られるとは。
このツアーでは親友ウォーレン・ジヴォンがジャクソンの前座を務めており、ここでも彼に呼ばれて「Mohammed’s Radio」を一曲披露しているのですが、そこで映し出されるジヴォンの姿がまた若々しい。
一時間にも満たない放送時間ではありますが、『THE PRETENDER』の時点までのジャクソンを凝縮したような名曲満載、最強のセトリで繰り広げられるライブの素晴らしさと言ったら。まだこの頃のジャクソンとバンドには『COLUMBIA 1978』のアリーナよりこじんまりとしたテレビスタジオの方が似合っている。
もはやマニアだけでなく一般の音楽ファンにもジャクソン70年代最高のライブ映像の一つとして自信を持って推せる衝撃的なハイクオリティ・プロショット。これはもう一家に一枚レベル！

Jackson Browne went on his first world tour to celebrate the release of his album “THE PRETENDER”. In December, I was touring Europe, and a byproduct of that was my appearance on the BBC music program “OLD GRAY WHISTLE TEST.”
As a result, we are very grateful that we have a professional shot video of the 1976 tour (recorded in a TV studio). Originally, for the 1976 tour, he formed a full-fledged backing band for the first time since he was conscious of a world tour, and therefore several TV recordings were performed, but among them, the most popular band was ” OGWT”.
Needless to say, there are probably many enthusiasts who have been familiar with it since the days of VHS, but what we are releasing this time is the latest rebroadcast version that was recently released on digital broadcast by the BBC.
Speaking of the rebroadcast version of “OGWT” in the 1970s, Clapton’s appearance “OLD GRAY WHISTLE TEST 1977 HD: REBROADCAST 2023” the following year is causing a sensation with its clear image quality, but this is exactly the Jackson Browne version.

Most simply, the level of perfection as a performance and a live act is this simultaneous release with star players backing, and it is a landslide victory over “COLUMBIA 1978” broadcast by the BBC, but it is still a beginner who has only just had a backing band. The atmosphere is captured in perfect image quality.
This image quality is so vivid that even if it were released as a press DVD, it would be at a high level. Just like the popular Clapton’s “OGWT”, this time it has been reborn as an overwhelming upper version.
David Lindley also does not have an overwhelming presence as much as he did in “COLUMBIA 1978”, and he appears to be just a member of the band. Rather, here you are guaranteed to be transfixed by Jackson’s dignified looks and singing voice in 1976.

Before evolving into a rocker with “RUNNING ON EMPTY,” Jackson’s stage, which seems to have transformed the melancholy world of his early albums into a band, can be seen in such a high quality image.
On this tour, his close friend Warren Zevon serves as the opening act for Jackson, and here he is called by him to perform one song, “Mohammed’s Radio,” and the appearance of Zevon reflected there is also youthful.
Although the broadcast time is less than an hour, it is full of famous songs that condense Jackson up to the time of “THE PRETENDER”, and the live performance is amazing with the strongest set. At this point in time, Jackson and the band were more suited to a small TV studio than the arena in COLUMBIA 1978.
A shocking high-quality professional shot that can be confidently recommended as one of the best live footage of Jackson’s 70s, not only for enthusiasts but also for general music fans. This is already a one-of-a-kind item for the whole family!
