Jackson Browne has released his new album “DOWNHILL FROM EVERYWHERE” for the first time in seven years and is on a joint tour with James Taylor. The latest report, the superb live album, is here.

If it is far from the PA, it will be squishy, ​​if it is in one corner of the venue, the stereo feeling will be biased, if the wind is strong, the sound will be played, and if it is not good, the wind sound will come in. Of course, there is no such worry in this work. It is recorded from the 7th row directly in front of the center near the stage, and it has all the stereo feeling, close contact feeling and stability feeling.
It’s ideal enough so far, but I’m surprised that this work has exceeded it. It’s a rich feeling. Although there is no reverberation in the open air, it is not possible to expect the sound to be reinforced by the sound of the hall. The muscular feeling of PA sound is captured as it is, and dynamism tends to be lacking. However, the sound of this work is vivid and at the same time rich and even go-jazz. This factor is … honestly, I don’t know. As I imagined, the system of the venue and the sense of the staff were outstanding … I can only think of it. Is it just a miracle sound created by chance, or is this the “2021 sound”? Now that the music scene has just begun to recover, we can’t make any conclusions yet.

これが現在までに公表されているスケジュール。音楽シーンは息を吹き返したように見えますが、世界的にはまだまだパンデミックも不安定。大陸を移動する世界ツアーとは行かず、現在予定されているのはすべて北米でのショウです。ブラウンは新作『DOWNHILL FROM EVERYWHERE』をリリースした直後からツアーを開始。「北米#2-3」がテイラーとのジョイント・ツアーで、本作のナパ公演もその一幕である「北米#2」24公演目のコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、ナチュラル感と密着感と美しさを兼ね備えた驚異の超絶オーディエンス。ブラウン登場！の開演シーンこそオーディエンスらしいリアルな熱狂も聴けますが、いざ演奏が始まると「これが客録!?」と耳を疑うサウンドが流れ出す。とにかく距離感がまったくなく、ヴォーカルもコーラスも息づかいレベルで絡んでも混じり合わず、穏やかギターのカッティングもドラムのブラシも超繊細。音量的に別に大きめでもないベースもアタック音が克明で流れるラインの表情も非常に豊かに描かれる。まるでFM放送……と言いますか、それ以上のサウンドなのです。
それほどまでのサウンドとなると要因を探りたくなるもの。いろいろと考えられますが、そのひとつが会場。現場となった“Oxbow River Stage”は、末広がりの扇形に座席が並んだオープン・スペースで、ちょうどハリウッド・ボウルを小さくしたような感じ。そのため、音を反射する天井も壁もなく、ＰＡの出音を反響ゼロでダイレクトに拾っているようです。もちろん、野外なら誰でも極上サウンドで撮れるというほどカンタンなものではない。ＰＡから遠ければスカスカになり、会場の片隅ならステレオ感が偏り、風が強ければ音が流され、下手をすれば風音が入ってしまう。もちろん、本作にはそうした心配は一切なし。ステージ近いセンター真正面の７列目から録音されており、ステレオ感と密着感と安定感がすべて揃っているのです。
ここまでで十分に理想的なのですが、本作はそれを超えてきたから驚き。それはリッチ感。野外は反響ゼロな反面、ホール鳴りによる音の補強は望めない。ＰＡ出音のムキ出し感がそのまま捉えられ、ダイナミズムは欠けがちなのです。ところが、本作のサウンドは鮮やかであると同時にリッチでゴージャズですらある。この要因は……正直、分かりません。想像するに会場のシステムとスタッフのセンスがずば抜けていた……くらいしか思いつかない。単に偶然が生み出した奇跡のサウンドなのか、それともこれが「2021年のサウンド」というものなのか。音楽シーンが回復し始めたばかりの現在ではまだ結論が下せないのです。
ともあれ、そんな超絶のダイナミック／ド密着サウンドで描かれるのは、2021年をひた走るジャクソン・ブラウンのフルショウ。気になるセット内容も整理しておきましょう。
