Following Steve Vai, Chad Wackerman & Scott Thunes also welcomed Frank Zappa in 1982 with a rejuvenated band on the road. Introducing a live album where you can experience the scene 100%.
Such a work was recorded in “July 7, 1982 Milan performance”. It is the best audience recording. Speaking of 1982, the release year of Chad’s first participation in the Zappa band, “The Ship Arriving Too Late to Save the Drowning Witch.” Tunis participated from the tour prior to the official joining from the next work. In order to imagine such a sense of the times, let’s first look back on the schedule at that time.

《October “THE MAN FROM UTOPIA” completed》

This is Frank Zappa in 1982. As a matter of fact, it is a European tour with 48 performances, and this is the only live activity in 1982. The Milan performance of this work was the 12th performance of “Europe # 2” which is the final stage. It doesn’t seem like this is all, but in the long run, the story will change dramatically. In fact, this period itself was a major milestone in my career. Zappa has been on tour since the 1960s, but it ended in 1982. The following year, in 1983, he did not tour with only a few performances with the orchestra, and after that, only special tours such as the “20th Anniversary Tour” in 1984 and the “Last Tour” in 1988. He stopped touring as a regular activity. This work is the 5th performance since the end of 1982. In other words, it was a turning point show that was about to make a big change in his life.
This work recorded at such a site is a fresh and neat audience recording. A master released by a core European zappa collector, the crystal clear air, the vivid core that penetrates the center, and the details that do not feel the reverberant component are wonderful. It also breathes in the generous cheers of Italy in the summer, and although it has a lot of timbre like an audience, it has no sense of distance, basket, or roundness. I don’t know the structure of the venue, but the sound seems to be a spacious outdoor park or an amphitheater with no roof or walls. Each note grows beautifully and does not reverberate. Roughly speaking, it feels like a “summer festival”.
And the show drawn with such a sound is wonderful. If you’re not good at it, the Zappa band won’t work, but Vai and the newcomers Chad & Tunis are all 22 years old, not only tight but also powerful and dynamic. Pop numbers like “You Are What You Is” also create a vivid lightness, such as “Marqueson’s Chicken,” “Zomby Woof,” “Doreen,” “Tell Me You Love Me,” and “The Man from Utopia Meets Mary Lou.” Lots of rare songs.
And I can’t say anything about the experience of witnessing such a show. It never interrupts the performance sound, but I can still feel that the audience is enjoying it a lot. As a matter of fact, I also inhale the voice, but that doesn’t mean I’m not listening to the show. On the contrary, it’s getting pretty hot. “The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing” and “Sharleena” clearly convey that. In these songs, they suddenly stopped playing and called out, “Go down, go down and sit down. Do you understand English?” Normally, the scene seems to have a tingling tension, but the humor of the performance and the mood of the audience create a mysterious atmosphere that is a mixture of peace and enthusiasm.

A crystal clear and transparent sound with the warmth of the Italian sun. It is a masterpiece of a live album where you can experience the full show of Zappa at the turning point with such beautiful sound. A two-disc set that allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty and reality that can only be recorded by an audience, while responding to the sound board. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

そんな本作が記録されたのは「1982年７月７日ミラノ公演」。その極上オーディエンス録音です。1982年と言えば、チャドがザッパ・バンドに初参加した『たどり着くのが遅すぎて溺れる魔女を救えなかった船』のリリース年。チュニスは次作からの正式加入に先立ち、ツアーから参加していました。そんな時代感をイメージするためにも、まずは当時のスケジュールから振り返ってみましょう。

これが1982年のフランク・ザッパ。実のところ、ひと繋がり48公演のヨーロッパ・ツアーであり、1982年のライヴ活動はこれだけ。本作のミラノ公演はその最終盤となる「欧州#2」の12公演目にあたるコンサートでした。これだけだとどうという事はなさそうですが、長い目で見ると話は大きく変わってくる。実はこの時期自体がキャリアの大きな節目でもありました。ザッパは60年代から絶え間なくツアー人生を送ってきたわけですが、それが終わったのが1982年。翌1983年はオーケスト共演の数公演だけでツアーを行わず、その後は1984年の「20周年ツアー」、1988年の「ラストツアー」といった特別ツアーだけ。レギュラー活動としてのツアーをしなくなったのです。本作は、そんな1982年の最後から５公演目。つまり、人生の大転換を目前に控えたターニング・ポイントのショウだったわけです。
そんな現場で記録された本作は、瑞々しく端正なオーディエンス録音。ヨーロッパのコアなザッパ・コレクターが公開したマスターで、クリスタル・クリアに透き通った空気感とそのド真ん中を貫く鮮やかな芯、さらには反響成分をまるで感じないディテールが素晴らしい。夏のイタリアらしい大らかな喝采も吸い込んでいますし、音色的にもオーディエンスらしさたっぷりなのですが、距離感や籠もり、丸みの類がない。寡聞にして現場会場の構造は分からないのですが、音から感じられるのは広々とした野外公園か屋根も壁もない円形劇場かのよう。１音１音がどこまでも綺麗に伸びて、反響しない。ざっくばらんに言いますと「夏祭り」のような開放感なのです。
そして、そんなサウンドで描かれるショウが素晴らしい。巧くなければザッパ・バンドは務まらないわけですが、さらにヴァイや新加入のチャド＆チュニスは揃って22歳という若々しさで、タイトなだけでなくパワフルで躍動的。「You Are What You Is」のようなポップ・ナンバーも鮮やかな軽快感を醸しだし、「Marqueson’s Chicken」「Zomby Woof」「Doreen」「Tell Me You Love Me」「The Man from Utopia Meets Mary Lou」といった珍しい曲も盛りだくさん。
そして、そんなショウを目の当たりにする体験感がまた何とも言えない。決して演奏音を遮るような事はないのですが、それでも観客が大いに楽しんでいるのが肌感覚で伝わる。実のところ、話し声も吸い込んでいたりするのですが、だからと言ってショウを聴いていないのではない。それどころか、むしろかなり熱くなっている。それが如実に伝わってっくるのが「The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing」や「Sharleena」。これらの曲では途中で演奏を突然止め、「下がってくれ、下がって座ってくれ。英語分かるか？」と呼びかけている。普段であればピリピリとした緊張感が漂いそうなシーンですが、演奏のユーモアと観客ムードにより、のどかと熱狂がない交ぜになった不思議な雰囲気が漂うのです。

イタリアの陽光が差し込むような暖かみが宿りつつ、クリスタル・クリアに透き通ったサウンド。そんな美音でターニング・ポイントにあったザッパのフルショウを極上体験できるライヴアルバムの大傑作です。サウンドボードばりの聴き応えでありながら、オーディエンス録音でしかあり得ない美と現実感に浸りきれる２枚組。どうぞ、心ゆくまで存分にお楽しみください。
