The era of “Brain Salad Surgery”, when the strongest keyboard trio in rock history was at its peak. Introducing a treasured master who can experience the scene.
It is “May 25, 1974 Rotterdam performance” that is imbued with such a work. It is an excellent audience recording that vacuum-packed the whole picture. EL & P, which made a shocking debut in 1970, swept the scene non-stop as it was. I ran through at once until 1974. After that, it restarted in 1977 with a pause in activity, but it did not regain its former momentum and brilliance. The “Brain Salad Surgery” era was not just a golden age of commerce, but also the “end of a sprint.” First of all, let’s look back on such an “end” tour schedule and confirm the position of the show.

This is the 1973/1974 EL & P. “Europe # 1” is the final version of “TRILOGY Tour”, after which “Brain Salad Surgery” was produced. The world tour started again before and after the release. Speaking of the symbol of this tour, it is the official edition “Ladies and Gentlemen”, but the Rotterdam performance of this work is about 3 months after that traditional work. It was the 14th performance of “Europe # 2”.
This work recorded at such a show is an audience recording with a lot of direct feeling. Although the audience recording is engraved on the slightly thicker hall sound, the core without a sense of distance approaches in front of you, and along with that, you can clearly see the details. Above all, the sensation of listening is overwhelming, and you can even feel the mass of the “sound” that should be physically the vibration of the air. As a matter of fact, it was introduced from the Amity label because the collector who released it did not reveal Gene, but the sound itself is a name recording that is appropriate for press.
The dynamic sound is drawn with a full show where you can enjoy the heyday of the wind with your whole body. The set is also slightly different from “Ladies and Gentlemen”, so let’s organize it while comparing it here.

The flow is roughly the same as “Ladies and Gentlemen”, but instead of “Jeremy Bender / The Sheriff”, “Benny the Bouncer” will be performed, and “Pictures at an Exhibition” will also be performed at the end. Especially valuable is “Benny the Bouncer”, a rare song that was played only on very limited shows on this tour. Moreover, by including this song, all the songs of “Brain Salad Surgery” are played. In other words, this work is also a live performance version / extended version of “Brain Salad Surgery”.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1974年５月25日ロッテルダム公演」。その全像を真空パックした絶品オーディエンス録音です。1970年に衝撃のデビューを飾ったEL&Pは、そのままノンストップでシーンを席巻。1974年まで一気に駆け抜けました。その後、活動休止を挟んで1977年に再始動しますが、かつての勢いや輝きを取り戻すことはなかった。『恐怖の頭脳改革』時代とは、単に商業的な黄金時代と言うだけでなく、そんな「全力疾走の果て」でもありました。まずは、そんな「果て」のツアースケジュールを振り返り、ショウのポジションを確かめておきましょう。

これが1973年／1974年のEL&P。「欧州#1」は“TRILOGY Tour”の最終盤で、その後に『恐怖の頭脳改革』を制作。リリース前後から改めてワールドツアーが始まりました。このツアーの象徴と言えば、公式盤『レディース・アンド・ジェントルメン』となるわけですが、本作のロッテルダム公演はあの伝統作から約３ヶ月後。「欧州#2」の14公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、ダイレクト感たっぷりなオーディエンス録音。やや厚めのホール鳴りにオーディエンス録音が刻まれてはいるものの、とにかく距離感のない芯が目の前に迫り、それに伴ってディテールも微細部まで克明に分かる。何よりスカスカ感のまるでない聴き応えが圧倒的で、物理的には空気の振動でしかないはずの「音」に質量まで感じるほどです。実のところ、公開したコレクターがジェネを明かしていないためにAmityレーベルからのご紹介とはなりましたが、サウンド自体はプレス化が妥当な名録音なのです。
そんなダイナミック・サウンドで描かれるのは、全盛の風を全身で味わうようなフルショウ。セットも『レディース・アンド・ジェントルメン』と微妙に異なっていますので、ここで比較しながら整理してみましょう。
