1982 DURAN DURAN made a breakthrough by sending “RIO” to 6th place in the United States. Introducing the superb live set where you can enjoy the countdown live that concludes the year of leap.
What is recorded in this work is “December 31, 1982 New York City Performance”. It is the highest peak master set of stereo sound board / multi-camera pro shot when appearing in MTV’s famous project “NEW YEAR’S EVE BALL” which was an up-and-coming music channel.

This is 1982 DURAN DURAN. The following 1983 activity basically begins with the production of “SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER”, so the “THE RIO Tour” ends with the above “UK” tour. The New York performance of this work was a special performance added at the end.
This show was also a New Year’s Eve event sponsored by MTV. Speaking of MTV at that time, it was the epicenter that had just opened in 1981 and was shaking the music scene by executing various projects in rapid succession. Broadcast on radio and TV just for that special event. It is also a large standard among the standard that has produced many existing groups. This work is also the FM sound board / TV pro shot, and it is the decisive board that both are set by the highest peak master.
First, DISC 1 is the FM sound board version. It is for WESTWOOD ONE’s famous program “Supergroups in Concert” and is digitized from the recently excavated pre-FM master. The rough tone with a slightly strong sound pressure is like “excavation sound source class” in the official class, but it is also powerful as if it is approaching with Guigui again. And above all, the sound board has an immersive feeling that is directly poured into the brain and an extremely vivid stereo feeling. Of course, the master freshness with no reception noise or deterioration over time is also great.
DISC 2 instead is a TV pro shot version. This is also made into a DVD from the finest master, which is said to be the highest peak at present. The beauty of the image is so much that I think “Is it an official laser disc?” “If it is not LD, is it a digital rebroadcast?” I know it’s an analog video master because of the slight noise in the audio peaks here and there, but I can’t tell from the visual beauty at all. No dubbing marks are found, and there is no tape twist, distortion, or fading. It’s a beautiful mix that makes me think it’s more neat than the FM broadcast version (except for a little noise).
What is drawn with such highest quality is the enthusiasm that the initial two sheets were concentrated and reduced and exploded with stage tension. As mentioned above, it is also immediately after the official work “LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH ’82!”, So let’s organize it while comparing (FM sound board / TV pro shot are the same set).

It was recorded about a month and a half after “LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH ’82!”, So the performance is very similar to Simon Le Bon’s fist T-shirt. そんな本作に記録されているのは「1982年12月31日ニューヨーク・シティ公演」。新進気鋭の音楽専門チャンネルだったMTVの名物企画“NEW YEAR’S EVE BALL”に出演した際のステレオ・サウンドボード／マルチカメラ・プロショットの最高峰マスター・セットです。
1982年と言えば『RIO』が一大センセーションを巻き起こしただけでなく、公式作『LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH ’82!』も残され、当店でもサウンドボード・アルバム『CLUTCH CARGO’S 1982（Uxbridge 1461）』が人気。そんな諸作の位置関係をイメージするためにも、まずは当時の歩みを紐解いてみましょう。

これが1982年のDURAN DURAN。翌1983年の活動は基本的に『SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER』の制作から始まりますので、“THE RIO Tour”は上記の「英国」ツアーで終了。本作のニューヨーク公演は、その最後に付け足された特別公演でした。
また、このショウはMTV主催の年越しイベントでもあった。当時のMTVと言えば、1981年に開局したばかりでさまざまな企画を矢継ぎ早に実行しては音楽シーンを揺るがしていた震源地。その特別イベントだけにラジオでもテレビでも放送。数々の既発群を生み出して来た定番中の大定番でもあります。本作もまた、そのFMサウンドボード／TVプロショットであり、両者を最高峰マスターでセットした決定盤なのです。
まず、DISC 1はFMサウンドボード篇。WESTWOOD ONEの名物番組“Supergroups in Concert”用のもので、最近になって発掘されたプリFMマスターからデジタル化されたものです。やや音圧の強いラフな音色はオフィシャル級の中でも「発掘音源級」といった感じですが、それがまたグイグイと迫ってくるようなド迫力にもなっている。そして何より、脳みそに直接流し込まれる没入感と極端に鮮やかなステレオ感はさすがサウンドボード。もちろん、受信ノイズや経年劣化も見当たらないマスター鮮度も絶大です。
代わってのDISC 2はTVプロショット篇。こちらも現状で最高峰と言われる極上マスターからDVD化しています。その映像美は「公式レーザーディスクになっていたっけ？」「LDじゃないならデジタル再放送？」と思うほど。ところどころ音声ピークにわずかなノイズがあるためにアナログのビデオ・マスターだと分かるのですが、映像美からはまったく分からない。一切のダビング痕が見当たらず、テープ・ヨレも歪みも退色もない。音声にしても（わずかなノイズ以外は）FM放送版よりも端正なんじゃないかと思うほどの美しいミックスなのです。
そんな最高峰クオリティで描かれるのは、初期２枚を濃縮還元してステージ・テンションで爆上げした熱演。上記のように公式作『LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH ’82!』の直後でもありますので、比較しながら整理しておきましょう（FMサウンドボード／TVプロショット共に同一セットです）。

……と、このようになっています。イベント用の特別パフォーマンスのためか約42分とLP約１枚分の尺なのですが、そこに初期２枚の必殺曲をギュウ詰め。その中でも光るのは「Hold Back The Rain」で、『LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH ’82!』にないだけでなく、その後23年に渡って封印されることになるレア曲でもあるのです。
『LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH ’82!』の約１ヶ月半後に収録されただけあって、サイモン・ル・ボンの拳Ｔシャツまで同じでパフォーマンスも酷似。あの名作映像の続編ともなる大傑作です。成功の風を全身に受けつつ、次作『SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER』でのさらなる飛躍を期していた大名演。最高峰マスター・セットの本作で存分にお楽しみください。
