The 50th anniversary tour finally came to Japan. Two original recordings of the highest grade that will be breaking news of the latest show in which Michael McDonald also participated will be released at the same time!
This work, which is also the first of two simultaneous releases, contains two superb audience records of one show. This is a 3-disc set with DISC 1-2 for the best original recording of the performance of “April 17, 2023: Nippon Budokan” and DISC 3 for the spectacular video. Let’s leave the detailed visit to Japan schedule to the explanation of “YOKOHAMA 2023 (Uxbridge 1909)” which will be released at the same time, but let’s check the position of the Japan tour itself by overlooking the whole picture of the 50th anniversary tour here.

This is the schedule of the “50th Anniversary Tour” that has been announced so far. Originally scheduled to start in 2020, it was postponed due to the new corona pandemic. In 2020/2021, it will tour the United States with more than 80 performances, and this year it has also started expanding overseas. Japan is a performance destination following Australia, and it was also the first visit to Japan in 6 years since 2017. Even in such a 50th anniversary visit to Japan, this work’s Nippon Budokan is a highlight. This work is a decision board set that allows you to relive the whole story with a full live album and superb view images. Let’s take a look at each of the two records separately.

[DISC 1-2: Just like official? A superb original recording] The main feature of this work is a full live album with a complete audience recording. The biggest point of this disc is the superb sound. It is an original recording of only this work that was handed over from the recording artist himself, but the frank story is “just like a sound board”. The thick core has no sense of distance at all, and the details are clear if the separation is vivid. As a matter of fact, if you listen with headphones, you will notice the hall sound, but even that does not become cloudy or muddy, and the thick core has the luster and dynamism of an official work.
When I do my best to look for faults, I sometimes hear the clapping of nearby customers, but it’s only a small part of the song. In the first place, the act of searching for “Where is it not official?” Should not be necessary for audience recording. This work is a sound that can not believe the fact that it is an audience recording without doing such a thing.

[DISC 3: Superb view full video that monopolizes the entire stage] And the third piece of this work is a spectacular audience shot that raises the image of a super-superb live album several times. The video was taken by a different photographer from DISC 1-2, and it was shot looking down from the second floor stand seat, but this is a superb view with no obstructions. To be clear, it is a distant view, but it is wonderful that the left and right positions are directly in front of the stage, and the entire stage fits neatly within the screen.
“Of course, it’s not just the members like Komeibu.” From there, he also boldly zoomed in to show off the power of the latest equipment. It’s a zoom that focuses on the entanglement between the members instead of following each one with super zoom, but you can fully enjoy the real thrill of the reunion where the heroes stand side by side.
Also noteworthy is the sound. As expected, there is only a second floor seat and it does not have a sense of distance like DISC 1-2, but the clearness that the core reaches straight is wonderful. The warm hall sound is elegant and the details are beautiful to the point that I think “Is Nippon Budokan such a good acoustic?”

The 50th anniversary tour that Michael McDonald also participated in… Its splendor has been acclaimed in various places, but this work is a 3-disc set that allows you to relive the highlight performance with a superb live album and full video. これが現在までに公表されている“50th Anniversary Tour”のスケジュール。当初は2020年に始まる予定でしたが、新型コロナ・パンデミックによって延期。2020年／2021年には80公演以上を欠けて全米を巡っており、今年になってから海外進出も開始しました。日本はオーストラリアに続く公演地であり、2017年から６年ぶりとなる来日でもありました。そんな50周年来日でも、本作の日本武道館はハイライト。本作は、その一部始終をフル・ライヴアルバムと絶景映像で追体験できる決定盤セットなのです。それでは、２つの記録をそれぞれ個別にご紹介していきましょう。

【DISC 1-2：まるでオフィシャル？な超極上オリジナル録音】
本作のメインとなるのは、完全収録オーディエンス録音によるフル・ライヴアルバムです。このディスク最大のポイントは、極上にも程があるサウンド。録音家本人から譲られた本作だけのオリジナル録音なのですが、ぶっちゃけた話が「まるでサウンドボード」。極太な芯には距離感がまったくなく、セパレート感も鮮やかならディテールも鮮明。実のところ、ヘッドフォンで聴き込めばホール鳴りにも気づくのですが、それさえも曇りや濁りにならず、極太な芯にオフィシャル作品のような艶とダイナミズムを宿らせているのです。
全力でアラ探しをしますと時おり間近客の手拍子が聞こえたりするのですが、それもささやかで一部の曲だけ。そもそも「オフィシャルっぽくないところはどこだろう？」と探すこと自体が本来オーディエンス録音には必要ないはずの行為。本作は、そんな事までしない事にはオーディエンス録音という事実が信じられないサウンドなのです。

【DISC 3：ステージを丸ごと独り占めする絶景フル映像】
そして本作の３枚目は、超極上ライヴアルバムのイメージを数倍にハネ上げる絶景オーディエンス・ショット。DISC 1-2とは異なる撮影者による映像で、２階スタンド席からの見下ろし気味に撮影しているのですが、これが遮蔽物ゼロの超絶景。ハッキリ言えば遠景ではあるものの、左右ポジションがステージ真っ正面なのが素晴らしく、画面内にステージ全部が綺麗に収まるのです。
もちろん、米粒のようなメンバーだけではありません。そこから最新機材の威力を見せつけるような果敢なズームも敢行。１人ひとりを超ズームで追うことはせず、メンバー同士の絡みを中心にしたズームですが、それだけに英雄が並び立つ再結成の醍醐味をしっかりと味わえるのです。
また、サウンドも特筆モノ。さすがに２階席だけあってDISC 1-2のような距離感ゼロとはいきませんが、芯がまっすぐに届くクリアさが素晴らしい。ウォームなホール鳴りも上品でディテールも隅々まで美しく「日本武道館ってこんなに音響良かったっけ？」と思ってしまうほどです。

マイケル・マクドナルドも参加した50周年ツアー……その素晴らしさは各所で絶賛を呼んでおりますが、本作はそのハイライト公演を超極上のライヴアルバムとフル映像で追体験できる３枚組です。第一報にしていきなり登場してしまった決定盤セット。あまりにもメモリアルな「今」、ぜひ本作で存分に味わい尽くしてください。
