Exactly 10 years ago, Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck’s joint tour was held exclusively in the United States. At the time, it looked like a mixed martial arts match between big names from the US and UK, and while it generated a lot of attention, no items that were truly unique were released, making it difficult to grasp the true nature of this unique tour. However, now that Beck has gone into exile, it was an extremely valuable opportunity to perform together live. What’s more, the CD-R items released in real time are now almost forgotten. Rather, I cannot deny the impression that it is a tour that has been overlooked even among enthusiasts.
In addition, it is also true that the best sound source worthy of the press CD did not appear. However, this time, the Greek Theater on October 20, 2013 provided by an overseas collector was an amazing high quality audience. Anyway, the sound image is close and the clearness is perfect. This is a masterpiece recording that can be described as “just like a soundboard.” I can’t believe he was able to capture the Brian set and Beck set, each of which has a completely different sound output from the band, in such perfect condition.
I see, because the audience recordings that were so excellent in real life were not distributed, the valuable joint tour at that time was probably spoiled with just a CD-R release. Big band Brian and solid Beck’s stages are captured with perfect sound quality. Audience recordings that boast such outstanding quality will be punished if they are not released on a limited press CD.
The overwhelming sound quality alone makes this a superb audience album that can be enthusiastically recommended by a wide range of generations from fans to enthusiasts, but the content is also amazing. Brian’s set is the ultimate condensed set that includes the legendary treasure “PET SOUNDS” complete set, sprinkled with Beach Boys classics, and the performance of Brian Band, who was a rock at the time, is impeccable. In addition to Al Jardine, the Beach Boys from the previous year also included David Marks, a remnant from the previous year’s full lineup, and even on the album “PET SOUNDS”, in which he had no involvement, he played the guitar solo on the title song. There are demonstrations such as playing.
On the other hand, Beck’s work foreshadowed what would become “LOUD HAILER” in that it was the first time two female members joined the band, violinist Lizzy Ball and bassist Rhonda Smith. In addition to this fresh arrangement, there is also a wonderful instrumental arrangement of the Jimi Hendrix cover “Little Wing” that was often played at the time, as well as Lizzy’s active violin playing from “Yemin” onwards, which is now 2013. It’s full of sounds and plays that could only be experienced in the Beck band, and you can feel Beck playing comfortably with the girls in the background.
Then, on the joint stage of the two groups, Beck played the melody of “Surf’s Up”, and members of Brian’s band added chorus harmony during “Brush With the Blues”, and other rare scenes unique to such joints were recorded. One after another. Of course, in “Barbara Ann” Beck plays a guitar solo, and now that he has passed away, I am reminded that there was plenty of performance unique to the joint that was not limited to just a mixed martial arts battle. Above all, the sound quality is very good, so this is the best audience album full of the forgotten charm of the fantastic joint tour. I was surprised at how good this sound was!
