Bobby Caldwell passed away on March 14, 2023. He was 71 years old. Since 2017, he has been suffering from neuropathy and has been battling the disease for 6 years and 2 months, and finally died in the arms of his beloved wife Mary. For the past five years, Bobby has been unable to walk due to a torn Achilles tendon, and continues to perform on stage using his wheelchair. However, the performance in Japan scheduled for March 2020 was canceled, and all plans were canceled in the summer of 2021.
Currently, the world is in the midst of sorrow for the loss of “Mr. AOR”. I think there are many people who are spending their time doing nothing. This week, a pro-shot work that spells out important memories of Bobby and Japan will appear.
This work features the performance of “April 11, 1990: Gotanda Kantai Hoken Hall”. It is a multi-camera pro shot that made a DVD of a special program broadcasted by a certain commercial broadcasting station. At that time, he came to Japan as a solo artist with his new album “HEART OF MINE” after a long absence. First of all, let’s check the position of the show by unraveling the schedule at that time.

2023年３月14日、ボビー・コールドウェル永眠。享年71歳でした。彼は2017年から神経障害に冒され、６年２ヶ月もの長い闘病生活を送り、最期は愛妻メアリーさんが抱きしめる腕の中で息を引き取ったそうです。ここ５年間のボビーはアキレス腱の断裂もあって歩くこともできず、車椅子などを使ってステージ活動を継続。しかし、2020年３月に予定されていた来日公演は中止となり、2021年夏にはすべての予定をキャンセルしていました。
現在、世界は“ミスターAOR”を失った悲しみの最中。何ともやるせない時間を過ごされている方も多いと思います。そんな今週は、ボビーと日本を大切な想い出を綴ったプロショット作品が登場します。
そんな本作にフィーチュアされているのは「1990年４月11日：五反田簡易保険ホール」公演。某民放局で放送された特番をDVD化したマルチカメラ・プロショットです。当時は久々の新作『HEART OF MINE』を引っさげてのソロ来日。まずは、そんな当時のスケジュールを紐解いてショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

以上、全９公演。『HEART OF MINE』は６年ぶりのソロ・アルバムにも関わらず、列島各地を巡る堂々たるジャパン・ツアー。当時の日本人気が透けるスケジュールでもあります。東京公演は序盤と最終盤に二分されていましたが、本作の五反田公演は序盤にあたる３公演目でした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、純粋なライヴ作品というよりは「ボビー・コールドウェル特番」と言った方が正確。当然ライヴ・プロショットがメインではあるのですが、全曲が披露されるわけではなく、合間合間にインタビューも挿入。中には演奏中にインタビューになる曲もあります。もちろんフル映像が理想ではありますが、この編集も良い味になっている。代表曲や当時の話題曲を押さえたセレクトですし、地上派らしく編集も丁寧。しかも、挿入されるインタビューも質問内容と曲をしっかりとリンクさせているのです（日本語字幕も完備です）。
例えば、序盤は新作『HEART OF MINE』のレパートリーが並ぶのですが、そこではセルフ・カバーの事情や近況を語り、「Jamaica」ではラヴソングではない曲のテーマについて触れる。そして、デビュー当時を振り返った言葉に導かれるように「What You Won’t Do For Love」「Come To Me」が流れる……。このように生演奏を絡めつつも、1990年当時の視点でキャリアを俯瞰してもいるわけです。
