In 1975, BAD COMPANY rushed to the top of the scene by sending out two major boards “BAD COMPANY” and “STRAIGHT SHOOTER” in quick succession. Introducing a historic live album that conveys the highlight performance.
It is “August 15, 1975 Orange performance” that is imbued with such a work. It is a superb audience recording when performing at the “Orange Festival” held at the Ancient Roman Theater. This festival is a huge outdoor event also called “French Woodstock”, and 15 groups such as PROCOL HARUM, WISHBONE ASH, TANGERINE DREAM, MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA, etc. will appear for 3 days. Among them, BAD COMPANY acted as a bird on the first day.
This festival is also known as the first turning point of BAD COMPANY. Let’s look back on the schedule at that time to explain its meaning.

This is the two-year history since its debut. You can see how busy he is producing / selling “BAD COMPANY” and “STRAIGHT SHOOTER” without a break while touring, but the movement stopped once in the fall of 1975. Although he will produce the 3rd album “RUN WITH THE PACK”, the release and tour will be postponed to 1976 and will be off for several months. And the “Orange Festival” of this work is the last one performance set just before that. It was the last show that ended the two magical years of creating two great boards and running through from the formation.
This work recorded at such a turning point is a superb audience recording that can not be thought of in the 70’s. Anyway, the core is very thick and there is no sense of distance. This is probably a characteristic of the field. This festival is held at the ancient Roman ruins, which is now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is an open space amphitheater with no walls or ceiling. Therefore, the sound output by the PA is directly sucked in without any reverberation or wraparound of the sound. Although it can be determined from the tone that it is an audience, it is a super direct and tight recording that does not seem to be a guest recording.
Moreover, this work is also the highest peak of such legendary recording. Although it is the best master published on the net, the pitch is still off by more than a semitone, and there is distortion in the left channel (although it is a surprisingly small level considering the times). In this work, such points are treated one by one. Of course, I did not imitate the beauty and reality of miraculous recording by earning unreasonable sound pressure, but I maximized the potential of the original sound and pursued the perfection as a musical work.
The sound is drawn with a full show that even wears the style of a big game. Even though it is a festival, it has a long time of about 1 hour only for birds, and the two major boards “BAD COMPANY” and “STRAIGHT SHOOTER” are concentrated and reduced there. Let’s organize the contents here.

Instead, rare “Wild Fire Woman” and single B-side songs are also interwoven, and especially the two singles “Little Miss Fortune” and “Easy On My Soul” are the last performances on this day. Even the golden original BAD COMPANY is a Tokuno show that super-compresses the taste of the climax.
And the performance itself is not defeated by the set. Although the tour ended two months ago, the spirit of going to a large-scale festival was tremendous, and of course there was no tiredness of the tour. Whether it was rehearsal or because of youth, the ensemble was so good that it couldn’t be thought of as a one-shot show, and the band potential that was about to be produced for the album “RUN WITH THE PACK” came out of the speakers. It is.
Original BAD COMPANY, a famous band that left a tremendous brilliance in the history of British rock. Even in its glorious history, it was the “Orange Festival” that reached its peak of momentum and potential. This work is a masterpiece of a live album where you can fully experience the historic scene with the super direct sound of a sound board. ２大名盤『BAD COMPANY』『STRAIGHT SHOOTER』を立て続けに送り出し、シーンの頂点へと駆け上がっていった1975年のBAD COMPANY。そのハイライト公演を伝える歴史的ライヴアルバムが登場です。
そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1975年８月15日オランジュ公演」。古代ローマ劇場で開催された“オランジュ・フェスティバル”に出演した際の超極上オーディエンス録音です。このフェスは「フランスのウッドストック」とも呼ばれた巨大な野外イベントで、３日間にわたってPROCOL HARUMやWISHBONE ASH、TANGERINE DREAM、MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA等々、15組のバンドが出演。そのうち、BAD COMPANYは初日のトリを務めました。

これがデビューから２年間の歩み。ツアーを重ねながら間髪入れず『BAD COMPANY』『STRAIGHT SHOOTER』を制作／発売している多忙ぶりが見て取れますが、その動きが一旦止まるのが1975年の秋。3rdアルバム『RUN WITH THE PACK』を制作するものの、リリースもツアーも翌1976年に先延ばしして数ヶ月のオフに入るのです。そして、本作の“オランジュ・フェスティバル”は、その直前に設定された最後の１公演。２大名盤を創り上げ、結成から無我夢中で走り抜けた魔法の２年間を締めくくるラスト・ショウだったわけです。
そんな節目の現場で記録された本作は、70年代とは思えない極上のオーディエンス録音。とにかく芯が極太で距離感がまったくない。これは恐らく現場の特性でしょう。このフェスは、現在ではユネスコの世界遺産にも指定されている古代ローマ遺跡で開かれており、壁も天井もないオープンスペースの円形劇場。そのため、反響や音の回り込みもまったくなしにＰＡが吐き出す出音をダイレクトに吸い込んでいる。音色からオーディエンスだろうと判別は付くものの、他に客録らしさがまるで見当たらない超ダイレクト＆タイトな名録音なのです。
しかも、本作はそんな伝説録音の最高峰でもある。ネットに公開されたベスト・マスターなのですが、それでもピッチが半音以上も豪快にズレており、左チャンネルに（時代を考えれば驚異的に少ないレベルとは言え）歪みもあった。本作では、そうしたポイントも逐一トリートメント。もちろん無闇な音圧稼ぎなどで奇跡録音の美しさやリアリティを損なうマネはしていませんが、原音が持つ可能性を最大限に引き出し、音楽作品としての完成度を突き詰めたのです。
そんなサウンドで描かれるのは、大物の風格さえ纏ったフルショウ。フェスとは言ってもトリだけに持ち時間は約１時間と長く、そこに２大名盤『BAD COMPANY』『STRAIGHT SHOOTER』を濃縮還元している。ここでその内容も整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。いつも２大名盤が軸になるとは言え、他の時代が一切混ざらない構成は珍しく、FREEナンバーさえない。その代わりレアな「Wild Fire Woman」やシングルＢ面曲も織り交ぜてられ、特にシングルの２曲「Little Miss Fortune」「Easy On My Soul」はこの日がラスト・パフォーマンス。黄金のオリジナルBAD COMPANYでも、絶頂時代だけの旨みを超圧縮した特濃のショウなのです。
そして、セットに負けていないのが演奏そのもの。２ヶ月前にツアーは終了していたものの、大規模フェスに臨む気迫は凄まじく、もちろんツアー疲れも皆無。リハーサルを重ねたのか、若さ故に記憶力が良いのか、単発ショウとは思えないほどこなれたアンサンブルは絶好調で、アルバム『RUN WITH THE PACK』制作を目前に控えたバンド・ポテンシャルがスピーカーから吹き出してくるのです。
英国ロック史に絶大な輝きを残した名バンド、オリジナルBAD COMPANY。その栄光の歴史でも、全盛の勢いとポテンシャルがピークに達したのが“オランジュ・フェスティバル”でした。本作は、その歴史的な現場をサウンドボードばりの超ダイレクト・サウンドでフル体験できてしまうライヴアルバムの大傑作です。現場の古代遺跡も世界遺産になりましたが、本作もまた間違いなくロックの文化遺産。どうぞ、心ゆくまで存分にご堪能ください。
