本作「HELLBENT DRIVER」は、全3公演が行われた1984年ジャパンツアーの中日、東京初日となった3月13日の日本武道館公演を、それまでトレーダー間でも一切知られていなかったオリジナル・マスターより音盤化しています。この日の録音は「THE END」等の既発タイトルでもリリースされていますが、同日の録音に限って考えた時、本録音は間違いなくトップクラスと断言できる一本です。
「THE END」収録の13日テイクも、サウンドボード音源のような充実した録音でしたが、本録音はさらに異なる角度とサウンドの趣味でライヴを切り取っています。リッチーのギターがリアルだった「THE END」に対し、本録音はより全体のアンサンブルを聴き込ませるサウンド。全ての楽音が高いバランスで、より近くから確かなダイレクト感で響いてきます。もちろん現代のデジタル録音のようなギラギラの明度とは違うのですが、しっかりとした輪郭と太い音色、ナチュラルな質感などは「テープ録音の最高峰」断じたくなる音像です。
それはオープニングの「Spotlight Kid」から明らか。ハードな曲だけでなく、独特のグルーヴが漂う「Miss Mistreated」や、煌びやかな「I Surrender」、ファンタジックな「Catch The Rainbow」、そしてメロディを突きつめた「Street Of Dreams」と、ここではRAINBOWらしさの全てが、極上のサウンドで凝縮されています。特に「Catch The Rainbow」や「Street Of Dreams」はジョーの伸びやかなヴォーカルを堪能するには打ってつけ。ギターやキーボードの厚い音色も、曲を何段階もアップグレードして再現しています。チャック・バーギのタイトなドラミングは「Fool For The Night」や「Fire Dance」といった新曲はもちろん、「Can’t Happen Here」に「Power」といったナンバーに、より活き活きとした表情を与えています。
ショウ後半になると、会場のサウンド・バランスが固まって、音質はより優れたものへと昇華します。それを証明するのが「Difficult To Cure」や「Blues」。前者のギター・イントロは、思わず「この日はこんなに音が良かったのか？」と、驚きを隠せないくらいに素晴らしい！　同曲中におけるリッチーのソロも、聴き手を感動させるに違いない、完全別格のリアルさで満喫できます。
このライヴでファンを喜ばせたのが「Death Alley Driver」。’82年ライヴで演奏が期待された曲が、ここではメイン・セットを最高の盛り上がりで締めくくります。
アンコールではこの時ならではの「Fire Dance」に、翌日は取り上げられなかった「Stone Cold」が、それぞれファンを楽しませます。最後はスロー・バラード風にアレンジされた「Smoke On The Water」が、ライヴを最高の余韻でクロージングします。

1983年3月、アルバム「BENT OUT OF SHAPE」のプロモーションに伴う、結果的にレインボー最後（当時）の日本公演から2日目となる、3月13日東京武道館でのステージを、クリアでバランスの取れた素晴らしい音質のオーディエンス録音で収録したプレスCD。この日のステージは「THE END」（DTB）にも収録されているが、「THE END」はリッチーのギターを中心に収録されており、リッチー・ファンには、ある意味、極上の音質だったが、こちらは、バンド全体のバランスが重視された音質で収録されている。この日のステージは「Spotlight Kid」からリッチーは最高のノリで、キッチリ弾いているソロは元より、バッキングでもアーミングをキメるなど、飛ばしまくっている。静と動のコントラストを鮮やかに表現する「Catch The Rainbow」と「Power」も素晴らしいが、デヴィッドの重厚なキーボードの音色から導かれるようにプレイされる「Street Of Dreams」は流石、名曲と唸らざるを得ない。後半の「Stranded」では、イントロでメインのリフを弾かないで、トリルやリズムを取って、オフ気味のリッチーらしいプレイを聴けるし、リッチーの「Blues」から1982年の日本公演ではプレイされずにファンを落胆させた「Death Alley Driver」が遂に期待通りスリリングにプレイされる。リッチーの様式美を感じさせるギターソロの素晴らしさに息をのむだろう。アンコールは観客の熱いコーラスで盛り上がる「Smoke On The Water」でラストを飾っている。なお、初回納品分には、翌14日東京武道館ー日本最終公演を、初登場の良好なオーディエンス録音で収録したマスターを使用したボーナス「OPEN THE LAST DOOR」が付属している。
