“8 people YES” which was a gorgeous co-starring unit that remains in the history of progressive rock and was also the biggest experimental project of YES. Introducing a video work that allows you to experience the scene in the best possible way.
This work was shot at “April 17, 1991 Worcester performance”. It is the best audience shot. It is a show that is known to have left the best images from the past, but this work is not the only one. It is a multi-camera image edited by luxuriously using images from two cameras and two kinds of finest recordings, and it is a large-capacity 3-disc set that depicts a full show of 2 hours and 52 minutes with the maximum and best image beauty. It is truly a “DEFINITIVE” blockbuster. First of all, the position of the show before the quality you care about. Let’s look back on the whole tour, which was a one-time miracle.

《8 people YES dismantling》

This is the outline of the activities of “8 people YES”. Basically, it will travel to North America / Europe in 4 months, and will end there. Approximately 7 months later, a performance in Japan was scheduled for an additional schedule. The official video “UNION LIVE” was shot at the final performance in 1991, but the Worcester performance of this work is also in the early stages. It was the 6th performance of “North America # 1a”.
This work recorded at such a start dash show is the best that I would like to call “a miracle of the 90’s audience”. If you are familiar with conventional video, you may remember the super-vivid image quality that you wouldn’t think of as analog shooting, but I’m surprised that the other camera used in this work is not defeated. Even if the viewpoint is switched, the beauty is not interrupted, and the brilliant visual beauty continues endlessly.
Moreover, the spectacular view of this work does not even seem to be two cameras. The factor is the stage. “8 people YES” has a 360-degree stage so that you can see your favorite members from any seat, and it slowly rotates. Therefore, the angle changes even with one camera, and it also switches to a completely different angle by switching, and it looks like a completely different camera due to the difference in zoom (in Howe’s solo time, he switches to the camera every time he looks back. Show it to your eyes. Editing art is fine!). As the creator asserts that “there are two cameras,” you can enjoy a variety of angles just like ordinary TV broadcasts.
Furthermore, the voice also uses two types of recording. Basically, it’s not synchronized, it’s a complementary complement of chips, but the recording that is mainly used is a brilliant sound. Although you can’t expect a soundboard-like close contact, the core that penetrates the clear air is powerful and the details are clear. Even though there are eight musicians with quite verbose personalities, even if each instrument overlaps, it does not mix. It is a beautiful recording with a delicious and beautiful symphonic feeling unique to the audience.
The quality that embodies the “beauty of the audience” is exactly the full show at the beginning of the tour, which is different from the official video “UNION LIVE”. It’s already a familiar set, but let’s organize it by comparing it here.

Even so, it’s beautiful. In general, “audience recording / shooting” may seem strange, but for us it is a culture and art that has its own beauty. This work is a video work that a maniac who knows its beauty shot with the concentration of a once-in-a-lifetime meeting, and another maniac carefully assembled it. A masterpiece that allows you to enjoy a more luxurious perspective than the real audience seats, while giving you a realistic sense of reality that cannot be achieved with sound boards or professional shots. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content with a set of 3 DVDs that does not spoil the beauty.

★ The best audience shot of “April 17, 1991 Worcester performance” in the “8 people YES” era. It is a multi-camera editing work that luxuriously uses “2 cameras + 2 types of recording”. そんな本作が撮影されたのは「1991年４月17日ウースター公演」。その極上オーディエンス・ショットです。従来から極上映像が残された事でも知られるショウですが、本作はそれだけではない。２台のカメラによる映像と２種の極上録音を贅沢に使って編集されたマルチカメラ映像であり、２時間52分のフルショウを最大最高の映像美で描き出す大容量３枚組。まさに「DEFINITIVE」な超大作なのです。その気になるクオリティの前に、まずはショウのポジション。一度きりの奇跡だったツアー全容から振り返ってみましょう。

これが“８人YES”の活動概要。基本的には４ヶ月間で北米／欧州を巡り、そこで一旦終了。約７ヶ月後に追加日程的に来日公演が組まれました。公式映像『UNION LIVE』は1991年の最終公演で撮影されたわけですが、本作のウースタ公演は逆に序盤も序盤。「北米#1a」の６公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなスタートダッシュのショウで記録された本作は「90年代オーディエンスの奇跡」と呼びたい極上ぶり。従来映像をご存知の方ならアナログ撮影とは思えない超ビビッド画質をご記憶かも知れませんが、本作に採用されたもう一台のカメラも負けていないからビックリ。視点が切り替わっても美しさが途切れず、キラキラと輝くような映像美が延々と続くのです。
しかも、本作の見応えはカメラ２台とさえ思えない。その要因はステージ。“８人YES”はどんな席からでもお気に入りのメンバーが見えるように360度ステージが採用され、それがじわじわと回転していく。そのため、カメラ１台でもアングルが変わっていき、さらにスイッチングによってまったく違う角度にも切り替わり、ズームの違いでまったく別のカメラにも見える（ハウのソロタイムでは、彼がパッと振り返る度に切り替えてカメラ目線に見せる。編集芸が細かい！）。制作者が「カメラは２台」と断言しているから分かるものの、それこそ普通のTV放送ばりに多彩なアングルが楽しめるのです。
さらに、音声も２種の録音を使用している。基本的にはシンクロではなく、欠けの相互補完ですが、メインに使用されている録音がとにかく輝きのサウンド。サウンドボード的な密着感こそ望めないものの、クリアな空気感を貫く芯は力強く、ディテールも鮮明。かなり多弁な個性のミュージシャンが８人も揃っていると言うのに、１つひとつの楽器が重なり合っても混じらない。オーディエンスならではの降り注ぐシンフォニック感が美味しくも美しい美録音なのです。
まさに「客席の美」を体現したクオリティで描かれるのは、公式映像『UNION LIVE』とも異なるツアー初期のフルショウ。もはやお馴染みのセットでもありますが、ここで比較しながら整理しておきましょう。

それにしても美しい。一般には奇特にも思われかねない「オーディエンス録音／撮影」ですが、私たちにとっては固有の美しさを持つ文化であり、アートです。本作は、その美しさを知るマニアが一期一会の集中力で撮影し、別のマニアが丹念に組みあげた映像作品なのです。サウンドボードやプロショットではあり得ないリアルな臨場感を湛えつつ、本当の客席よりも贅沢な視点を楽しめてしまう大傑作。どうぞ、美しさを損なわないDVD３枚組で、心ゆくまで存分にご堪能ください。
