In recent years, “Mike Millard Tape” has been digitized from the tape directly connected to the master or the low generation tape. This tape was recorded by Mike Millard, a taper familiar to fans due to the outstanding technology of audience recording. The label has released several sound sources based on this newly digitized Mike Millard tape, but if you look closely, you can see “Brushed Mike Millard Tape” and “Legendary Mike Millard.” Did you notice that there are two types of tapes? Not all Mike Millard tapes have perfect sound quality, and some have a lot of room for improvement, and the “Brushed” series has been significantly improved. Originally, it is almost perfect and there is not much room for sound quality improvement, and the “Legendary” series is the one that has been kept to a minimum such as light editing between songs.
This time, The Who is introduced from the “Brushed” series. You might think that it doesn’t sound very good because it’s “brushed”, but it’s not. Originally, the sound quality was quite good, but it could be even better, so I refined it. Since the reverberation sound remained a little strong, that point was improved. This 1980 tour mainly features the album “Who Are You”. It’s different from the most popular time, but as you can see in the picture, Pete is playing the telecaster, and it’s also fun to hear the difference in guitar sound from when it was SG or Les Paul.

近年マスター直結、或いはロウ・ジェネレーションのテープからデジタル化が進んでいる“マイク・ミラード・テープ”。オーディエンス録音の卓越した技術でファンにはお馴染みのテーパー、マイク・ミラード氏により録音されたテープです。同レーベルからもこの新デジタル化のマイク・ミラード・テープをマスターにした音源が複数リリースされておりますが、よく見ると“ブラッシュド・マイク・ミラード・テープ”と“レジェンダリー・マイク・ミラード・テープ”の二種類があることにお気付きでしょうか。マイク・ミラード・テープも全てが完璧な音質なわけではなく、中にはかなり手を加えて改良の余地があるものもあり、大幅に手を加えて改良されたものが“ブラッシュド”シリーズ。元々完璧に近く音質改良の余地があまり無く、曲間等の軽い編集など最低限にとどめてあるものが“レジェンダリー”シリーズとなります。
今回は“ブラッシュド”シリーズよりザ・フーの登場です。“ブラッシュド”である事からあまり音が良くないかと思われるかもしれませんが、決してそうではありません。元々なかなかの音質でしたが、更によくなる可能性があったため磨きをかけたわけです。残響音がやや強く残っていたためその点を改良しました。この1980年のツアーは主にアルバム『Who Are You』をフィーチャーしています。最も人気のあった時期とは異なりますが、写真の通りピートがテレキャスターを弾いており、かつてSGやレスポールだった頃とのギター・サウンドの違いを聴くのもまた一興です。
