WHITESNAKE in 1983 was a time when Cozy Powell was joining them and they were breaking out into a powerful band, but had not yet turned into metal. A new masterpiece of the extremely rare song “The Rattler” is now available.
What is inscribed in this work is “September 3, 1983 Kaiserslautern performance”. This is a very thick audience recording. Speaking of “The Rattler,” it is a masterpiece included in Cozy’s 3rd solo album “OCTOPUSS”, and it was also the first co-written number between David Coverdale and Cozy. It was also played live by WHITESNAKE for a short period of time, and this work is also its best recording. So, when was that “temporary period”? This is the progress from Cozy joining to Mickey Moody/Colin Hodgkinson leaving. After finishing the “SAINTS & SINNERS Tour”, a souvenir from the previous lineup, the new WHITESNAKE began production on the masterpiece “SLIDE IT IN”. Before its completion, the headliner for the big stage “MONSTERS OF ROCK” has been decided. However, at that time, not only the Donington performance, but also a festival tour as “Europe #2”. The Kaiserslautern performance of this work was the ninth performance, approximately three weeks after the sacred Donington performance, which was also included in the official video.
Until now, there have been no good recordings of “Europe #2,” but recently a new recording has been discovered that overturns the established theory. That is what this work is. The person who released it was Mr. GManOF, a deep collector who has released a number of famous recordings in recent years. He is also known as a master recorder, but although this work is not a recording by himself, it is a masterpiece digitized from his treasured 1st Gene cassette.
The sound is clear and extremely thick. Between the songs, you can hear lively applause and conversation voices, which is perfect for the audience, but the important performance sound is extremely powerful and vivid like a laser beam. Contrary to its vividness, there is almost no hall noise, and a vivid outline that is neither cloudy nor muddy reaches your ears. That should be it. In fact, the “VfR Fussballstadion” where the incident took place is an outdoor soccer stadium, with no walls or ceiling to reflect sound. The sound emitted from the PA is inhaled in its entirety.
The collectors who came here are sharp. Yes, this work took place on the same day and at the same location as THIN LIZZY’s masterpiece “MONSTERS OF ROCK: KAISERSLAUTERN 1983 (Shades 1314)” which was discovered two years ago. Although the name of the recording artist has not been disclosed, it is the 1st Gene Cassette excavated from the same “GManOF” collection, and the taper is probably the same sister work.
A special set only available for “Europe #2” with such a clear sound with a sense of openness. The symbol of this period is the official video “MONSTERS OF ROCK 1983”, but this work is a longer full recording, so let’s compare and organize it.

At the sacred Donington performance, Cozy flew a helicopter and performed a drum solo in the style of “633 Squadron / 1812 Overture,” but he refrained from soloing at other performances. They were playing “The Rattler” instead. In the first place, “OCTOPUSS” is attended by members of the new WHITESNAKE, and you can enjoy live performances by the originator.
Also, speaking of originators, “Guilty Of Love” is also a highlight. It is a masterpiece that has been played by various lineups since then, but “Europe #2” was the only one that was performed live by the original six members. This work is Otiens’ best take next to the official video. More specifically, “Mistreated” is also important. After joining Koji, it was replaced with “Crying In the Rain,” but it was specially revived in “Europe #2.” This is the keynote version by Coverdale, who has been a favorite song for many years, and Cozy, who performed well at RAINBOW.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1983年９月３日カイザースラウテルン公演」。その極太オーディエンス録音です。「The Rattler」と言えば、コージーの3rdソロアルバム『OCTOPUSS』に収録された名曲で、デヴィッド・カヴァデールとコージーの初共作ナンバーでもありました。ほんの一時期だけWHITESNAKEのライヴでも演奏されており、本作はそのベスト録音でもあります。では、その「一時期」とはいつだったのか。当時の活動概要を俯瞰しつつ、本作のポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これがコージー加入からミッキー・ムーディ／コリン・ホジキンソン離脱までの歩み。前ラインナップの置き土産である“SAINTS & SINNERS Tour”を終えた新生WHITESNAKEは、名作『SLIDE IT IN』の制作に突入。その完成を前に大舞台“MONSTERS OF ROCK”のヘッドライナーが決まりました。ただし、その際にはドニントン１公演だけではなく、「欧州#2」としてフェス・ツアーを実施。本作のカイザースラウテルン公演は、公式映像にも残された聖地ドニントン公演の約３週間後となる９公演目でした。
これまで「欧州#2」は良い録音がなかったのですが、最近になって定説を覆す名録音が新発掘された。それが本作なのです。公開したのは、近年名録音を次々と発表しているディープ・コレクター「GManOF」氏。自身も名録音家として知られる人物ですが、本作は本人録音ではないものの、秘蔵の1stジェネ・カセットからデジタル化された銘品なのです。
そのサウンドは、クリアにして極太。曲間では生々しい喝采や会話声も聞こえてオーディエンスらしさ満点なのですが、肝心要の演奏音はやたらと力強く、レーザー光線のように鮮やか。生々しさに反してホール鳴りはほとんど感じられず、曇りも濁りもないビビッドな輪郭が耳元に届くのです。それもそのはず。実は、現場となった“VfR Fussballstadion”は野外のサッカースタジアムで、音を反射する壁も天井もない。PAから吐き出される出音をそっくりそのまま吸い込んでいるのです。
ここピンと来たコレクターは鋭い。そう、本作は２年前に発掘されたTHIN LIZZYの名作『MONSTERS OF ROCK: KAISERSLAUTERN 1983（Shades 1314）』と同じ日・同じ現場。録音家の名前は明かされていませんが、同じ「GManOF」コレクションから発掘された1stジェネ・カセットであり、恐らくはテーパーも同じ姉妹作でしょう。
そんな開放感たっぷりのクリア・サウンドで描かれるのは、「欧州#2」だけの特別セット。この時期の象徴と言えば公式映像『MONSTERS OF ROCK 1983』なわけですが、本作はさらに長尺なフル録音ですので、比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。公式映像にはなかった「Don’t Break My Heart Again」「Wine, Women An’ Song」も美味しいですが、やはり目玉はレア曲「The Rattler」でしょう。聖地ドニントン公演ではヘリコプターを飛ばして「633 Squadron / 1812 Overture」仕様のドラムソロを繰り広げたコージーでしたが、他公演ではソロを封印。代わりに「The Rattler」を演奏していました。そもそも『OCTOPUSS』は新生WHITESNAKEの面々が参加しており、オリジネイターによる生演奏が楽しめるのです。
また、オリジネイターと言えば「Guilty Of Love」もポイント。その後も様々なラインナップで演奏される名曲ですが、オリジナル６人でライヴ演奏されたのは「欧州#2」だけでした。本作は公式映像に次ぐオーティエンスのベスト・テイクなのです。もっと言えば、「Mistreated」も重要。コージー加入後は「Crying In the Rain」に代えていましたが、「欧州#2」では特別に復活。長年持ち歌にしてきたカヴァデールと、RAINBOWでも名演を繰り広げたコージーによる基調バージョンなのです。
「欧州#2」を最後にオリジナル・メンバー：ミッキー・ムーディが離脱。新たにジョン・サイクスを迎えたWHITESNAKEは重金属化への道をひた走ることになります。本作が記録されたのは、その直前。そう。本作はブルースロック時代最後の名録音でもあるのです。レア曲も美味しく、時期的にも歴史的。単に音の良い新発掘マスターの域を超えた新名盤。どうぞ、じっくりとご堪能ください。
