This is U2 in 1984/1985. Live Aid was also a special performance just before the end of the world tour, but this work was about half a year ago. It was the 10th performance of “Europe # 2”.
This work recorded at such a show is the best audience with “super”. Not only is it the same recording artist collection as Clapton, but the venue is actually the same. The sound is very similar, the atmosphere is extremely clear, and the playing sound has a very thick core and is wonderfully turned on. It’s not mistaken for a sound board in terms of tone, but I want to make a mistake in the direct feeling and details. In the commentary of Clapton’s edition, it was praised as “a level that blows away bad sound boards” and “Italy also had a taper similar to Mark Millard”, but it applies to this work as it is.
That said, there is also a completely different personality from the Clapton edition. It’s the enthusiasm of the audience. Speaking of 1985, Clapton was already a big figure, but U2 was an up-and-coming young man, and 1985 was also the first Italy. The performance burned with ambition, and the audience was greeted with fierce enthusiasm. You might think that this is a “noisy, jarring recording”, but it’s not. Although people scream and whistle, it is a balance that is overwhelmed by the thick playing sound, and the large chorus sung throughout the venue firmly follows Bono’s singing voice. The tight master-slave relationship does not shake at all, and only the heat of the site is transmitted ultra-realistically.

The selection of famous song phrases included in “The Electric Co.” and “Bad” is different, but more than that is “Trash, Trampoline And The Party Girl” and Bob Dylan’s cover “Knockin’On Heaven’s Door”. Both are not medleys or fragment phrases, but are played one by one. Especially surprising is the big chorus in “Trash, Trampoline And The Party Girl”. Of course, it’s not so rare all over the world, but the scene of this work was the first Italian tour, and at that time there was no way to know the situation of live performances in other countries. Nevertheless, the whole venue is singing a single B-side song. Of course, not to mention the other representative songs. It is also a document album where you can experience how U2 was sought after at that time.
The unknown Bologna master taper, even known as the “Italian Mirrored”. It is a live album created by the Omoto Master. The sound quality is very similar to that of the shocking Clapton, but there are even more shows that burn hot and hot. これが1984年／1985年のU2。ライヴエイドはワールド・ツアーの終了間際の特別公演でもあったわけですが、本作はその約半年前。「欧州#2」の10公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は「超」の付く極上オーディエンス。クラプトン編と同じ録音家コレクションというだけでなく、実は会場も同一。サウンドも酷似しており、空気感は猛烈にクリアですし、演奏音は芯も極太で素晴らしくオン。音色的にサウンドボードと間違える事はありませんが、ダイレクト感もディテールも間違えてあげたくなる。クラプトン編の解説では「下手なサウンドボードなどふっ飛ばすレベル」「イタリアにもマーク・ミラード並みのテーパーがいた」と絶賛されていましたが、そっくりそのまま本作にも当てはまるのです。
とは言いつつ、クラプトン編とまったく違う個性もある。それは観客の熱狂。1985年と言えばクラプトンは既に大御所だったわけですが、U2は新進気鋭の若手であり、1985年が初イタリアでもあった。その演奏は野心に熱く燃え上がり、観客も苛烈な熱狂で迎えている。こう書くと「周囲がうるさい耳障り録音」と思われるかも知れませんが、そうではありません。方々から悲鳴や口笛が飛び交いはするものの、それは極太な演奏音に蹂躙されるバランスであり、会場中が歌い出す大合唱もボノの歌声にしっかりと付き従う。キッチリとした主従関係がまったくブレず、現場の熱さだけが超リアルに伝わってくるのです。
そんな灼熱＆クリアな極上サウンドで描かれるのは、瑞々しいひたむきさが胸を締め付ける若武者たちのフルショウ。“THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE Tour”というと、当店では名門キニーの傑作『DUBLIN 1985（Wardour-258）』が定番なのですが、本作はレッグが異なるせいかセットも似て非なるもの。ここで比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。「The Electric Co.」や「Bad 」に盛り込まれる名曲フレーズのセレクトも違うわけですが、それ以上なのが「Trash, Trampoline And The Party Girl」やボブ・ディランのカバー「Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door」。どちらもメドレーや断片フレーズではなく、１曲ずつしっかりと演奏されています。特に驚きなのは「Trash, Trampoline And The Party Girl」での大合唱。もちろん全世界的にはそれほどレアでもないわけですが、本作の現場は初のイタリア・ツアーであり、当時は他国ライヴの状況など知る由もない。それにも関わらず、会場中がシングルＢ面曲を歌いきっている。もちろん、他の代表曲群は言わずもがな。いかに当時のU2が求められていたのか、それを肌感覚で味わえるドキュメント・アルバムでもあるのです。
