Freddie Mercury, an unprecedented genius and an eternal star. A video work deeply and deeply into his life is a gift release decision. In our shop, we have introduced numerous QUEEN special numbers so far, but this work is a masterpiece that is exceptionally deep, especially special.
It is contained in such a work, the Japanese special number “Queen Special” aired on December 2001. This broadcast was a special program to broadcast programs produced abroad in two pieces. Each program is 2 hours in total in one hour. It is one piece that draws a completely different program of individuality with the best master. Let’s start with introducing two programs immediately.

【First half: Freddie individuals approach deeply documentaries】
First of all, an hour ‘s documentary program. It is the one that re-edited the documentary which was made into the DVD as “LOVER OF LIFE SINGER OF SONGS” in one hour frame in “THE UNTOLD STORY” which BBC produced in 2000.
Not only is the content dense, there is also the addition of images. As a matter of fact, the focus of this documentary is not QUEEN, but Freddie individuals. Because of that, on the commercial DVD, QUEEN’s performance scene was rare, and it was quite soggy making as well. In contrast, this work, which is a broadcast version, added QUEEN ‘s live scene and comments from big – brand musicians. The musicians include Phil Collins, Mick Jagger, Ian Hunter, Slash, Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Risa Minnellipole McCartney, Elton John, and so on. It is accompanied by a flower documentary that tends to be plain. The narration of Japanese is even more important. Japanese subtitles are attached to each person’s comments, but Japanese nationalities dubbed. It is finished in a version that approaches the chest even more directly.

● Early childhood where roots float
And contents. This is really deep. Of course, I will talk about members of QUEEN, but the focus of this work is Freddie’s life. Many of his friends and acquaintances have appeared, and he talks about Freddie’s life. Mother Jar · Balsala, sister’s cashmilla cook, partner Mary Austin and Jim Hatton. Furthermore, he was a teacher of the school days, a classmate, a principal, a designer who coordinated costumes across public and private, and so on. Whereas many of the documentaries focus on Freddie ‘s “music” and “feat”, this work sticks to “people”.
I do not think that QUEEN is boring unless it is main, it is not. It has been refined as a result of photography and editing. The early stage is the time series of “classical times → QUEEN formation”, but when I came to meet Mary, I will step into the inner side of Freddie. From the affection of Mary who accepted the gay confession, I returned to the Indian school days of childhood (8 years old) to explore the signs, and the person who knows the life at that time says “I sometimes removed the clip” I jump to the irritability of the QUEEN era. It freely switches back and forth between times.
This is very effective. Normally, images and comments before the debut tend to be bored quietly (although valuable), but this work is quite boring by mixing the familiar QUEEN era. Moreover, although it seems to be a configuration that seems to be obvious at first glance, “Freddie’s well-known” and “Roots” are directly linked because it is centered on “the person of Freddie”. For example, in a disorder, “I do not want to overdo it, so I may go to hell because of that.” “The theme of costumes (a party) is a longing person, he remained himself.” Freddy’s appearance as a star In the childhood, “It was understood that Freddie was often in the play from the school diary at the time, mostly it was the role of a woman” (But what did you look up to the class journal … …) .
Also, children’s days are not just precious pictures. In the duo of the first school band THE HECTICS, not only bandmate of the time but also THE HECTICS which exists as a school band now appears, played in the auditorium. 【Latter half: 3rd LIVE AT WEMBLEY】
Following Freddie ‘s “People” deeply ___ ___ 0 ___ ___ 0 Freddie’s last tour was also one of the highlights “Wembley Stadium Performance July 12, 1986”. It is that multi camera · pro shot.
Of course, this show was released as a live video “QUEEN AT WEMBLEY”, and now the full version of DVD is familiar. However, this work is a third broadcast version which is different from either one. “In The Lap Of The Gods …. Revisited”, “Who Wants To Live Forever”, “Is This The World We Created?” In the editing version broadcasted by British broadcasting station “CHANNEL 5” on March 13, 2000 “Tutti Frutti ‘” and Freddie’s Shinga Long were cut and the introduction of some songs was omitted. It is crammed in an hour’s broadcasting frame. Of course, Japan’s unique telop is also added here.
Currently it is an editorial edition for collectors, but it is wonderful that it is a set with the first half documentary. The first half focuses on “other than QUEEN” “human beings”, the second half makes me feel direct “why we like Freddie”. The movie ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ also called for excitement because the live scene of LIVE AID was last. Wembley stadium of this work also gives the same pleasure.

Wembley stadium where you can taste a documentary that closely follows Freddie’s truth and a rare editing with a passionate performance. It is a masterpiece of the Japanese program which airs both of them in two pieces. 不世出の天才にして永遠のスター、フレディ・マーキュリー。彼の人生に深く深く迫る映像作品がギフト・リリース決定です。当店では、これまでも多数のQUEEN特番をご紹介してきましたが、本作は中でも格別にディープで、特別すぎる大傑作です。
そんな本作に収められているのは、2001年12月に放映された日本特番『クイーン スペシャル』。この放送は海外で製作された番組を２本立てで放送する特別プログラムでした。各番組は１時間で合計２時間。個性のまったく異なる番組を極上マスターで描ききる１枚なのです。それでは、早速２つの番組を個別にご紹介していきましょう。

【前半：フレディ個人にディープに迫るドキュメンタリー】
まず登場するのは、１時間のドキュメンタリー番組。大元になっているのは2000年にBBCが製作した“THE UNTOLD STORY”で、『LOVER OF LIFE SINGER OF SONGS』としてDVD化されているドキュメンタリーを１時間枠に再編集したものです。
内容が濃密になっているだけでなく、映像の追加もある。実のところ、このドキュメンタリーの焦点はQUEENではなく、フレディ個人。そのせいか、市販DVDではQUEENの演奏シーンはほとんどなく、かなり地味な作りでもありました。それに対し、放送版である本作はQUEENのライヴシーンや大物ミュージシャンのコメントを追加。そのミュージシャンはフィル・コリンズ、ミック・ジャガー、イアン・ハンター、スラッシュ、ロバート・プラント、ロジャー・ダルトリー、ライザ・ミネリポール・マッカートニー、エルトン・ジョン等々など。地味になりがちなドキュメンタリーを華を添えている。それ以上に重要なのが日本語のナレーション。各人のコメントには日本語字幕が付きますが、ナレーションは日本人が吹き替え。より一層ダイレクトに胸に迫るバージョンに仕上がっているでのす。

●ルーツが浮かぶ幼少時代
そして内容。これが本当に深い。もちろん、QUEENのメンバーも語りますが、本作の焦点はフレディの人生。彼の友人・知人が大勢登場し、フレディの人生を語っていくのです。母親のジャー・バルサラ、姉のカシュミラ・クーク、パートナーだったメアリー・オースティンやジム・ハットン。さらには学生時代の恩師や同級生、校長、公私に渡って衣装をコーディネートしていたデザイナー等々。多くのドキュメンタリーがフレディの「音楽」や「偉業」をテーマにしているのに対し、本作は「人」にこだわっているのです。
QUEENがメインではないと退屈かと思いきや、そうではない。撮影も編集も究めて練り上げられている。序盤こそ「学生時代→QUEEN結成」と定番の時系列ですが、メアリーとの出会いまで来たところでグッとフレディの内面に踏み込んでいく。ゲイの告白を受け入れたメアリーの愛情から、その予兆を探るために幼少期（８歳）のインド学校時代へ戻り、当時の生活を知る人物が「はめを外すこともあった」と語ると、QUEEN時代の乱痴気騒ぎへと飛ぶ。自在に時代を行き来するのです。
これが非常に効果的。通常、デビュー前の映像やコメントは（貴重ではあっても）地味で退屈しがちですが、本作は慣れ親しんだQUEEN時代が混ざることでまったく退屈しない。また、一見分かりづらそうな構成にも思えますが「フレディの人となり」を中心にしているために「よく知るフレディ」と「ルーツ」が直結する。例えば、乱痴気騒ぎでは「やり過ぎなんてもんじゃない。あれのせいで地獄へ行くかも」「（パーティの）仮装のテーマはあこがれの人。彼は彼自身のままだった」とスター然としたフレディの姿が語られ、子供時代では「当時の学級日誌からフレディがよく劇に出ていた事が分かりました。大抵は女性の役でした」と繋がるのです（しかし、学級日誌まで調べたとは……）。
また、子供時代も単に貴重な写真だけではない。初めて組んだスクール・バンドTHE HECTICSのくだりでは、当時のバンドメイトだけではなく、現在も学校バンドとして存在するTHE HECTICSが登場して講堂で演奏。当時の写真と現在の子供達をシンクロさえ、当時のフレディの生活がリアルに浮かび上がる。幾多のドキュメンタリーよりも遙かに巧みに作り込まれているのです。

●フレディ最期の瞬間に立ち会う最晩年
他のドキュメンタリーで省略されがちなソロ活動も見どころ。自宅録音された即興版「Barcelona」も登場（凄い！）しますし、モンセラ・カバリエとの絆がいかに深かったのか、そしてソロアルバムも「最高の出来さ！」と誇らしげに語るフレディ。映画『ボヘミアン・ラプソディ』では暗黒時代扱いでしたが、その真実が伝わるのです。
極めつけなのが晩年。メアリーのコメントは先日ご紹介したギフトDVDR『IS THIS THE REAL LIFE?』でも観られましたが、本作は最後の恋人ジム・ハットンも語る。HIVを告白したフレディはジムに「ドアは開いているから出て行っていいよ」と言い、彼は「ばかを言うな。出ていくものか」と返す。1987年当時にHIV感染者と関係を変えないということは、運命を共にする覚悟が必要だったはず。メアリーとジム、２人の深い愛情に胸を打たれるのです。
そして、話はフレディの最期へ。異変に気付いたアシスタントとジムが医者を呼び、メアリーを呼び、それでも「持ち直すかも知れない」と思って見舞客を断り……と、運命の11月24日を振り返っていく。そして医者もメアリーも帰り、寝間着を着替えさせようとしたところで、フレディの呼吸が止まっていることに気がつく……。その最期の瞬間を、実際に看取った本人の言葉で綴られるのです。こうしてフレディの人生を綴ってきた番組は、QUEENの「No-One But You」で幕を閉じる。演奏する３人の姿だけでなく、歌詞の日本語字幕が胸を締め付けるのです。

みんな悲しんでいるのさ　彼らの心を揺さぶれるのは君のほかにいないもの
１人また１人、いいやつが早死にする
太陽に近づき過ぎた天使　忘れない永遠に」

【後半：第３のLIVE AT WEMBLEY】
「人」としてのフレディに深く迫った第１部に続くのは、「音楽」をダイレクトに感じる第２部。フレディのラスト・ツアーでもハイライトのひとつだった「1986年７月12日ウェンブリー・スタジアム公演」。そのマルチカメラ・プロショットです。
もちろん、このショウはライヴビデオ『QUEEN AT WEMBLEY』としてリリースされ、現在では完全版のDVDもお馴染み。しかし、本作はそのどちらとも違う第３の放送バージョン。2000年３月13日にイギリスの放送局“CHANNEL 5”が放映したエディット版で「In The Lap Of The Gods…. Revisited」「Who Wants To Live Forever」「Is This The World We Created?」「Tutti Frutti’」やフレディのシンガロングがカットされ、いくつかの曲のイントロも省略。１時間の放送枠に詰め込まれています。もちろん、こちらでも日本独自のテロップが加えられています。
現在ではコレクター向きの編集版でもありますが、前半のドキュメンタリーとセットなのが素晴らしい。前半が「QUEEN以外」「人となり」に焦点を充て、後半は「なぜ私たちはフレディが好きなのか」をダイレクトに感じさせてくれる。映画『ボヘミアン・ラプソディ』もLIVE AIDの再現シーンがラストだからこそ感動を呼んだ。本作のウェンブリー・スタジアムも、それと同じ喜びをくれるのです。

ひときわ深くフレディの真実に寄り添えるドキュメンタリーと、レアな編集で熱気溢れる名演を味わえるウェンブリー・スタジアム。その双方を２本立てで放映した日本番組の大傑作です。制作したイギリス側はもちろん、この組み合わせを選んだ日本の放送局にも、極上クオリティで残した記録マニアにも感謝しかない。数ある映像作品でも格別の感動が止まらない１枚。ぜひ、この機会にご体験ください。
