With “THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS”, TOTO in 2002 delivered the 25th anniversary tour to Japan. Introducing a new excavation original recording that conveys the scene.
The performance of “December 10, 2002: Tokyo International Forum” was imbued with this work. It is the best audience recording. Speaking of coming to Japan in 2002, masterpieces such as “YOKOHAMA 2002 (Uxbridge 978)” and “TOKYO 2002 FINAL NIGHT (Uxbridge 979)” are also popular, but of course this work is a separate performance. Above, all 10 performances. The flow is roughly “Kanto # 1 → Tohoku / Hokkaido → Kanto # 2 → Western Japan / Kyushu → Kanto # 3”, and the above two works were representative works of “Kanto # 1 / Kanto # 3”. On the other hand, this work is a live album of “Kanto # 2” arranged in the middle stage. It is the middle part of a trilogy where you can enjoy the beginning, middle and end of the Japan tour while being in the same Kanto area.
This work recorded at such a show is a dynamic and exquisite recording. This show may have already been released with a squishy sound, but of course this work is a different sound source. You can tell that it is an audience in terms of timbre, but it does not give a sense of distance. It approaches with a powerful core, and the sound of the hall creates thickness and dynamism. The point is that the details emerge clearly from the center of the sound. Even though various phrases overlap, they do not form a lump, and you can fully enjoy the presence of each member. It’s a masterpiece recording that immerses you in such a feeling that the thick playing sound and vocals are approaching, and the details wrap the whole body without blurring.
The sound was that much because the recorder wasn’t free. Recently, he was a person who attracted attention in the 90’s recording of VAN HALEN and YES, and this week also Ozzy’s “BUDOKAN 1996 FINAL (Shades 1347)” “BUDOKAN 2002 (Shades 1350)” and YES’s “TOKYO 2003 2ND NIGHT (Amity 635)” ) ”Is also a collection of this person. This work is the TOTO version.
The sound is drawn by Greatest Hits, which has been through 25 years of glory. Speaking of the symbolic work of this tour, the official “LIVE IN AMSTERDAM” is similar, but it is a different set, so let’s organize it by comparison.

Since there are many medley arrangements, the number of songs is just for reference, but it is like this. The official “LIVE IN AMSTERDAM” is longer on the DVD version, but you can enjoy “Stop Loving You” and “Could You Be Loved” that you can’t even listen to.
This alone is full, but MC is even more interesting. Especially after “Don’t Stop Me Now”, I must listen to what Lukather is saying, and I can easily translate it into Japanese …
“Today I watched the 1980 bootleg video. We’re still in the kids’ days. Happy memories. Thank you to all my friends in Japan.” “Thank you so much. It’s still possible. I want to come back as long as I can and play for you. ”
I’m saying … In fact, Lukather says “I watched the video” in our “Tokyo 1980” (Masterport DVD) released at that time. (Note: At this time, VHS was still the main thing, and bootleg DVDRs were rare. TOTO people should have seen their own collector’s DVDRs for the first time in Nishi-Shinjuku). I’m grateful that he only allowed me to publish the photos of my visit on the website, but I didn’t know that I was using it on the stage of the day as well … What’s more, this episode was firmly mentioned in an interview with a young guitar magazine at the time (I will not copy it because it will be long, but if you have the March 2003 issue, please see p.74. Please give me). There, he says, “I’m impressed by playing” with the memories of Jeff Porcaro, but this work is not just a selection of masterpieces, but the live that emotions ooze out from the end of the performance. It’s an album.
TOTO is playing a group of famous songs accumulated over a quarter of a century with all feelings. It is a new excavation master who can experience the whole story with exquisite sound on site. Great sound and emotional movement that allows you to experience the manifestation of emotions. Please chew it carefully.
★ Recording of the best audience of the performance of “December 10, 2002: Tokyo International Forum”. 『THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS』に伴い、結成25周年ツアーを日本にも届けてくれた2002年のTOTO。その現場を伝える新発掘オリジナル録音が登場です。
そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2002年12月10日：東京国際フォーラム」公演。その極上オーディエンス録音です。2002年の来日と言えば、当店では『YOKOHAMA 2002（Uxbridge 978）』『TOKYO 2002 FINAL NIGHT（Uxbridge 979）』といった傑作群も人気ですが、もちろん本作は別公演。まずは、当時のスケジュールを振り返り、それぞれのポジションを確かめておきましょう。

以上、全10公演。ざっくり「関東#1→東北/北海道→関東#2→西日本/九州→関東#3」という流れであり、上記２作は「関東#1／関東#3」の代表作でした。それに対し、本作は中盤に配された「関東#2」のライヴアルバム。同じ関東圏でありつつ、ジャパン・ツアーの序盤・中盤・終盤を味わえる三部作の中編なのです。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、ダイナミックな絶品録音。このショウはスカスカ・サウンドな既発もあったりしますが、もちろん本作は別音源。音色的にオーディエンスだと分かりますが、それが距離感にはなってない。力強い芯グイグイと迫り、ホール鳴りが厚みとダイナミズムを生み出している。ポイントなのは、その鳴りのド真ん中からディテールがキッチリと浮かび上がること。多彩なフレーズが重なりながらも塊にならず、メンバー１人ひとりの存在感をしっかりと味わえるのです。ぶ厚い演奏音とヴォーカルが迫りつつ、細部がボケずに全身を包んでくれる……そんな感覚に浸れる傑作録音なのです。
それだけのサウンドになったのも、録音家がタダモノではないから。最近、VAN HALENやYESの90年代録音で注目を集めた人物で、今週もオジーの『BUDOKAN 1996 FINAL（Shades 1347）』『BUDOKAN 2002（Shades 1350）』やYESの『TOKYO 2003 2ND NIGHT（Amity 635）』もこの人物のコレクション。本作は、そのTOTO篇なのです。
そんなサウンドで描かれるのは、栄光の25年が駆け抜けるグレイテスト・ヒッツ。このツアーの象徴作と言えば、オフィシャル『LIVE IN AMSTERDAM』ですが、それとは似て非なるセットなので比較で整理してみましょう。

メドレーアレンジも多いので曲数はあくまで参考ですが、このようになっています。公式『LIVE IN AMSTERDAM』はDVD版の方が長いわけですが、本作はそこでも聴けない「Stop Loving You」「Could You Be Loved」まで楽しめます。
これだけでもお腹いっぱいなのですが、さらに面白いのがMC。特に「Don’t Stop Me Now」の後でルカサーの語っている内容が必聴でして、カンタンに和訳しますと……
「今日、1980年のブートレッグビデオを観たんだ。自分たちがまだキッズの時代のものだ。幸せな思い出だ。日本の全ての友達に感謝する。」「今まで本当にありがとう。これからも可能な限り戻ってきて、君達のためにプレイしたい。」
……と言っているのです。実は、ルカサーが「ビデオを観た」と言っているのは、この当時にリリースされた当店の「Tokyo 1980」(Masterport DVD）のことなのです。（注：この時はまだVHSがメインで、ブートレッグDVDRは珍しかった。TOTOの面々も自身のコレクターズDVDRというものを西新宿で初めて見たはず）。来店写真のHP公開を許可してくださるだけでもありがたかっのですが、まさか当日のステージでもネタにしていたとは……。しかも、このエピソードは当時のヤングなギター専門誌のインタビューでもしっかりと語っていました（長くなるので書き写しはしませんが、2003年３月号をお持ちの方はp.74をご覧になってください）。そこではジェフ・ポーカロの想い出も交えつつ「演奏していて感極まってしまう」とも言っているのですが、本作は決して単なる名曲選なのではなく、その感慨が演奏の端々から滲み出てくるライヴアルバムなのです。
四半世紀の間に積み上げてきた名曲群を、万感の想いを込めて演奏しているTOTO。その一部始終を絶品サウンドで現場体験できる新発掘マスターです。感情の発露まで体感できる素晴らしいサウンドと感動作。どうぞ、じっくりと噛みしめてください。

★（思い出こぼれ話１）TOTOの面々はこの時2回来店し、最初はボビーとトニー。この時、ボビーが店内BGMで流してた「Tokyo 1980」(DVDR)の「99」でのルカサーのギターソロ・パートのミスに気づき、「おっ、あいつ間違えた。もう一度見たいから戻して」と店員にリクエスト。そのパートを観ながら「ぎゃはは、あいつ焦ってる」と言って、二人で楽しそうにしてたのを思い出します。
