Tony Hadley came to Japan as a solo artist for the first time in two years. An original recording that conveys the scene is now available.
“October 3, 2022: Yokohama Performance (Late Show)” is imbued in this work. It is an excellent audience recording. The previous visit to Japan was in February 2020, but immediately after that, the new corona pandemic occurred and activities were suspended. Like bands/musicians around the world, they are gradually resuming their live performances from 2021, and this year they are in full swing. They are doing a vigorous tour titled “40TH ANNIVERSARY Tour”. First of all, let’s look back on the whole activity and check the position of the performance in Japan.

This is the 2022 schedule that has been announced so far. Compared to 2020, which had more than 10 performances, it has expanded several times at once, and perhaps because of the reaction, he is conducting an energetic tour that will be the largest in his solo career. However, the performance place is overemphasized in the home country England. Most of “Europe # 1” and “Europe # 2” will be performed in the UK. In Japan, “3 days x ② performances = 6 performances in total” were held, and this work is a live album recorded at the final performance.
This work is an original recording given by the recording artist himself, and the sound is neat and clear. It is not a type that can never be mistaken for a sound board with an audience recording that feels a little space, but the site itself is not far because of the size of the club. The most wonderful thing is the strength of the core and the clear air. Even though it makes you feel the sound of the hall, there is a rushing power in the core that penetrates the middle, and Hadley’s singing voice also has a sweet luster in the tone and stretches refreshingly. And the elegant and quiet on-site mood also plays a role in the clearness. It’s a venue where you can eat, and the audience is zero. It has an adult atmosphere where you can thoroughly enjoy the strangeness of the melody, and it vividly highlights the subtleties of the performance and singing voice. Adam Wakeman (son of former YES member Rick Wakeman) is playing the keyboard on this visit to Japan, and it seems that the gorgeous phrases inherited from his father are shining.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2022年10月３日：横浜公演（レイトショウ）」。その絶品オーディエンス録音です。前回の来日は2020年２月だったわけですが、その直後に新型コロナ・パンデミックが発生して活動を休止していました。世界中のバンド／ミュージシャンと同じように2021年から少しずつライヴを再開させており、今年に入って一気に本格化。“40TH ANNIVERSARY Tour”と題して精力的なツアーをこなしています。まずは、その活動全景を振り返り、来日公演のポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが現在までに公表されている2022年のスケジュール。十数公演だった2020年に比べて一気に数倍に拡大し、反動からかソロ・キャリア最大級となる精力的なツアーを実施しています。ただし、その公演地は母国イギリスに偏重。「欧州#1」「欧州#2」もほとんどがイギリス公演だったりします。日本では「３日間×②公演＝全６公演」が実施され、本作はその最終公演で記録されたライヴアルバムなのです。
本作は録音家本人から譲られたオリジナル録音でして、そのサウンドは端正でクリア。やや空間も感じるオーディエンス録音で決してサウンドボードと間違えるようなタイプではないのですが、現場そのものがクラブ規模のために遠いわけでもない。何よりも素晴らしいのは芯の力強さと透き通った空気感。ホール鳴りを感じさせながらもそのど真ん中を貫く芯に突進力があり、ハドリーの歌声にもトーンに甘い艶が宿り、清々しく伸びる。そして、上品で静かな現場ムードもクリアさに一役買っている。食事もできる会場でして、無闇に騒ぐ観客はゼロ。メロディの妙をじっくりと味わう大人な雰囲気でして、それが演奏と歌声を機微の機微まで鮮やかに浮き立てている。今回の来日ではアダム・ウェイクマン（元YESのリック・ウェイクマンの息子）がキーボードを務めているのですが、父親譲りの煌びやかなフレーズがキラキラと降り注ぐようです。
