With the release of their new album “RELENTLESS” approaching, THE PRETENDERS have become a hot topic for their tour with GUNS N’ ROSES. A super-best video that can witness the latest stage has arrived.
This work was filmed at “Pilton performance on June 24, 2023”. It is a multi-camera pro shot when appearing in the UK’s largest music festival “GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL”. The current THE PRETENDERS are energetically traveling around the world, but in fact the tour itself is also the first time in four years. In the sense of knowing such a recent situation, let’s first take a bird’s eye view of the activity outline after the new corona pandemic.

This is the schedule for 2022/2023 that has been announced so far. THE PRETENDER’s last tour was in 2019, and live activities were suspended due to the pandemic. There was no tour for the previous work “HATE FOR SALE”. This work is the 18th performance of “Europe # 1”, which has just resumed full-scale activities. “Europe # 1” and “North America” are the opening acts of GUNS N’ ROSES on some dates, but the appearance of “GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL” in this work was also a set with GUNS N’ ROSES.
This work, which conveys such a stage, is exactly the “completely official level”. The GUNS N ‘ROSES edition “Shades 1797” of the same festival released the day before has also been very well received, but this work is exactly the same in terms of quality. The quality that bets on the prestige of the prestigious BBC in the UK is top class even in a number of modern distributions, and the sound quality, image quality, mix, camera work … everything is superb. Furthermore, the stage is bright if the point only for this work is mentioned. Summer in high latitude Europe is as bright as dusk until quite late, and even in Piltun it doesn’t get dark until after 21:00. The stage of THE PRETENDERS, which appeared at “19:45-20:45”, was bright from beginning to end, and the stage and the large crowd spectacle were well visible. And it is the last “Mystery Achievement” that produces an unexpected effect. When the members retreated to the backstage after the show, Paul McCartney was waiting there! After Paul warmly welcomed the members, Chrissie Hynde took Paul out on stage and greeted the audience. It is because of the daytime stage that you can clearly see even the backstage where there is no lighting.

そんな本作が撮影されたのは「2023年６月24日ピルトン公演」。英国最大級の音楽祭“GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL”に出演した際のマルチカメラ・プロショットです。現在のTHE PRETENDERSは精力的に世界を巡っていますが、実はツアー自体が４年ぶりでもある。そんな近況を知る意味でも、まずは新型コロナ・パンデミック以降の活動概要を俯瞰してみましょう。

これが現在までに公表されている2022年／2023年のスケジュール。THE PRETENDERSの前回ツアーは2019年であり、パンデミックと共にライヴ活動は休止。前作『HATE FOR SALE』でのツアーはありませんでした。本作は本格的な活動再開から間もない「欧州#1」の18公演目。「欧州#1」と「北米」は一部の日程でGUNS N’ ROSESのオープニング・アクトなのですが、本作の“GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL”出演もGUNS N’ ROSESとのセットでした。
そんなステージを伝える本作は、まさに「完全オフィシャル級」。前日リリースされた同フェスのGUNS N’ ROSES篇『Shades 1797』も大好評を賜っておりますが、本作もクオリティ面ではまったく同じ。英国の名門BBCの威信を賭けたようなクオリティは数ある現代配信でもトップクラスでして、音質・画質・ミックス・カメラワーク……すべてが超極上です。さらに本作だけのポイントを挙げるならステージが明るい。高緯度なヨーロッパの夏はかなり遅い時間になるまで夕暮れのような明るく、ピルトンでも夜21時を過ぎないと暗くならない。「19:45-20:45」の出演だったTHE PRETENDERSのステージは終始明るく、ステージも大群衆スペクタクルもよーく見えるのです。そして、それが意外な効果を生んでいるのがラストの「Mystery Achievement」。終演後にメンバーがバックステージへ引っ込むと、そこで待っているのはポール・マッカートニー！　ポールがメンバーを暖かく迎えると、クリッシー・ハインドがポールをステージに連れ出し、観客に挨拶する。照明のないバックステージまでくっきりハッキリ見えるのは日中ステージだからこそです。
もっともポールは顔出しだけなのですが、本作は豪華ゲストとの共演もポイントだったりする。その辺をチェックしつつ、最新セットも整理しておきましょう。
