TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND came to Japan for the first time in four years after releasing the groundbreaking four-series project “I AM THE MOON.” Two super-excellent original recording sets will be released at the same time, reporting on the Japan tour that is currently underway.
This work is the first part of the Japan visit report. This is a super-excellent audience recording of the “October 18th/20th, 2023: Tokyo Dome City Hall” performance. This week’s simultaneous release is a complete report of 4 performances in Tokyo with 2 titles. First of all, let’s check the schedule of the tour progress and the composition of this work.

All 6 performances above. This work is a “2 full recording set x 2 performances” and is a 4-disc set that completely records “first day + second day”. This work, vacuum-packed from such a scene, is truly a masterpiece. In fact, the recording artist was different for the two performances, and “First Day (DISC 1-2)” was performed by an experienced master who has also worked on many press masterpieces. On the other hand, “2nd Day (DISC 3-4)” is a new masterpiece that is currently attracting attention, especially “BUDOKAN 2023 DAY 6 (Uxbridge 1906)” which was talked about as the best sound quality of the tour with Eric Clapton. When I think of people, many people probably think of them.
Of course, if the recording artist/position is different, the sound personality will be different, but overall, it can be said that it is “like a sound board.” If you listen closely with headphones, you can feel the hall sound component, but the core that breaks through that is powerful and has plenty of density. There is no sense of distance in the performance sounds and vocals that reach your ears with detailed details.
If I were to point out a difference in individuality between these two recordings, “First Day (DISC 1-2)” is extremely clear and tight. The performance sound is clear down to the smallest details, the outline stands out, and it stands out vividly in the crystal clear atmosphere. Despite being a large ensemble of 12 people, there is a great sense of separation, as they never mix together even when they intertwine.
On the other hand, “Day 2 (DISC 3-4)” is dynamic and gorgeous. The subtle rumble that you feel subconsciously adds luster and depth to the core, and the ensemble’s dramaticism, which heats up through solos and interplay, washes over you in a huge wave. Of course, the sense of separation/resolution here is also great, and it’s amazing because it doesn’t become a clump even when everyone is having fun.
More than the sound, the set list is what separates the two performances. TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND always entertains with a daily set of a diverse repertoire, but this work is thorough, with not a single song overlapping in the two performances (to be more specific, there was no overlapping until the third day) . Here, let’s treat the four-disc set as one work, and combine both performances and organize them as a whole.

…and it looks like this. Overall, it’s well-balanced, but each performance is unique. For example, the point of “First Day (DISC 1-2)” is a complete reproduction of “I: CRESCENT”. From the start of the performance, the first part of the “I AM THE MOON” series will be played in its entirety, with the songs in the same order. “First Day” basically focuses on originals, but also covers Jeff Beck’s “Beck’s Bolero”.
On the other hand, the cover for “Day 2 (DISC 3-4)” has increased. About half of the show (7/15 songs) are covers. The new song selection for “I AM THE MOON” is also completely different, with a style that is a concentrated version of “II: ASCENSION” and “III: THE FALL.”
This is a superb live album with a total of 31 songs and a duration of 4 hours, 13 minutes, and 18 seconds. The “I AM THE MOON” project was a bold attempt, but the accompanying live performance was also extremely challenging. As expected, this is TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND, which has the reputation of being the “strongest live band on earth.” A 4-disc set that allows you to fully experience their latest two days with their masterful sounds. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

★Superb audience recording set of “October 18th/20th, 2023: Tokyo Dome City Hall” performance. Both are original recordings with very thick and close-fitting sounds that sound like a “soundboard”. “First day (DISC 1-2)” is extremely clear and tight, “Second day (DISC 3-4)” is dynamic. Her gorgeous personality is also delicious. A total of 31 songs were performed over two days with no duplicates, and on the “first day” you can enjoy a complete reproduction of “I: CRESCENT” from the beginning.

以上の全６公演。本作は「フル録音２枚組×２公演」で“初日＋２日目”を完全収録した４枚組なのです。そんな現場を真空パックした本作は、まさに極上の銘品。実は２公演で録音家が違っており、「初日（DISC 1-2）」はプレス名盤も数多く手掛けてきた歴戦の達人。逆に「２日目（DISC 3-4）」は今話題を集めている新名人でして、特にエリック・クラプトンでツアー最高音質と話題になった『BUDOKAN 2023 DAY 6（Uxbridge 1906）』の人物、と言えばピン来る方も多いのではないでしょうか。
もちろん録音家／ポジションも違っていればサウンド個性も異なって来るわけですが、総じて言えるのは「まるでサウンドボード」。ヘッドフォンで耳を澄ませるとホール鳴り成分も感じられはしますが、それを食い破るような芯は力強く密度もたっぷり。細やかなディテールを連れながら耳元に届く演奏音やヴォーカルには距離感など微塵もありません。
そんな両録音でも、あえて個性の違いを挙げるなら「初日（DISC 1-2）」は猛烈クリア＆タイト。演奏音が細部の微細部までくっきりとしていて輪郭が際立ち、クリスタル・クリアな空気感に鮮やかに浮き立つ。12人に及ぶ大所帯アンサンブルにも関わらず、絡み合っても決して混じり合わないセパレート感も絶大です。
それに対して「２日目（DISC 3-4）」はダイナミックでゴージャス。無意識下に感じるようなうっすらとした鳴りが芯に艶と厚みを与え、ソロやインタープレイで加熱していくアンサンブルのドラマティシズムが巨大な波になって押し寄せてくる。もちろん、こちらのセパレート感／解像度も素晴らしく、全員で盛り上がっても塊にならないからスゴい。
そんなサウンド以上に両公演を大きく分けているのはセットリスト。TEDESCHI TRUCKS BANDは常に多彩なレパートリーの日替わりセットで楽しませてくれますが、本作は２公演で１曲も被らないという徹底ぶりなのです（もっと言いますと３日目まで被りゼロでした）。ここでは４枚組で１作品と捉え、両公演を合わせ、総合で整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。まとめるとバランスが取れていますが、１公演ずつでは個性的。例えば「初日（DISC 1-2）」のポイントは『I: CRESCENT』の完全再現。開演から『I AM THE MOON』シリーズの第一弾を曲順もそのままに５曲丸ごと演奏するのです。「初日」は基本的にオリジナル重視でもありますが、カバーではジェフ・ベックの「Beck’s Bolero」も披露しています。
代わっての「２日目（DISC 3-4）」は逆にカバーが増量。ショウの約半分（７曲／15曲）がカバーです。そして『I AM THE MOON』の新曲セレクトも丸っきり異なり、『II: ASCENSION』『III: THE FALL』を濃縮したスタイルになっています。
