In the first place, Randy California (real name: Randy Craig Wolf) was a child prodigy guitarist found by Jimi Hendrix (then Jimmy James) when he was 15 years old, and co-starred in JIMMY JAMES AND THE BLUE FLAMES (Jimi). Called bandmate Randy Palmer “Randy Texas” and Randy Wolf “Randy California”). After that, when Jimi went to England, he tried to take him, but it didn’t come true, and it was “SPIRIT” that Randy, who was left behind, formed with his father-in-law Ed Cassidy.

ついに発掘された「ランディ・カリフォルニア入りパープル」のライヴアルバム『QUEBEC 1972 feat. RANDY CALIFORNIA（Darker Than Blue 284）』。DEEP PURPLE史に残った最後の幻ラインナップを詳らかにする歴史的決定盤です。しかし、主役であるランディ・カリフォルニアに関してはその後のパープル・ファミリーと接点がないこともあって「何者？」「どんなギタリスト？」という方も多いと思います。そこで、ランディを一躍有名にした本業バンド“SPIRIT”の超・極上映像も同時リリース決定です！
そんな本作が撮影されたのは「1978年４月５日エッセン公演」。西ドイツの名物番組“ROCKPALAST”に出演した際のマルチカメラ・プロショットです。この映像は、まさにSPIRITの象徴。現役時代には正式な映像作を残さなかった彼らにとって長年「オフィシャル代わり」を務めてきたプロショットなのです。実際、そのクオリティは完全無欠。幾多のアーティストの名映像を残してきた番組ですが、本作のクオリティはそのROCKPALASTコレクションでも特級の素晴らしさ。デジタル全盛の現代の眼にも超鮮明で、サウンドもミックスもパーフェクト。完璧にオフィシャル級の逸品なのです。
そのクオリティで描かれる伝説バンドのライヴは、まさにロックの真髄。今回はランディ・カリフォルニアを知っていただきたいがためのリリースでもあるので、ここで簡単な略歴を。そもそもランディ・カリフォルニア（本名：ランディ・クレイグ・ウルフ）は15歳の頃にジミヘン（当時はジミー・ジェイムズ）に見出された神童ギタリストで、JIMMY JAMES AND THE BLUE FLAMESで共演していました（ジミはバンド・メイトのランディ・パーマーを「ランディ・テキサス」、ランディ・ウルフを「ランディ・カリフォルニア」と呼んでいました）。その後、ジミが渡英する際にも彼も連れて行こうとしますが叶わず、遺されたランディが義父エド・キャシディと結成したのが“SPIRIT”でした。
メンバーチェンジも多い彼らの歴史は紹介しきれませんが、ざっくり言いますと「第一期：1967-1972年」「第二期：1974-1979年」「第三期：1982-1997年」という感じ。本作が撮影された1978年は「第二期」の最終作『FUTURE GAMES』のリリース後。核となるランディ＆エド・キャシディにラリー・ナイトを加えたトリオ編成。ハード・ロックなスタイルを採りながらも60年代後期のアメリカン・ロックを体現し、ジミ・ヘンドリックスのフォロワー振りを爆発させていた時代でした。
そして、本作から吹き出すロックは、そんな70年代の総括にして理想形。1978年と言えば、伝統の公式ライヴアルバム『LIVE』がリリースされた時期ですが、本作はその映像版にして拡張版とも言える。良い機会でもありますので、比較しながらセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。初期のオリジナル曲に加え、ジミのレパートリーを盛り込み、アンペグとマーシャルで組み合わされたスタックやヴィンテージ・ラディック等のイクイップメントも活用。さらに、メンバーのファッションまでもが60年代風。当時は80年代も間近だったわけですが、“あの時代”を生き抜いたランディには関係なし。彼のこだわりが音からも映像からも発散されているのです。
そしてランディの出で立ちもジミの影響が垣間見える。キャシディやラリーはいかにも1978年らしいシンプルなスタイなのですが、主役を張るランディはやや時代がかったラメのサイケ調。彼はリッチー・ブラックモアの代役としてDEEP PURPLEのステージにも立ったわけですが、演奏もパフォーマンスもどちらかというとロビン・トロワーやフランク・マリノに近い世界だったのかも知れません。そして、そんな本作最大の見どころは、ラスト曲「If I Miss This Train」。THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BANDのディッキー・ベッツがゴールド・トップを持って飛び入りし、18分に渡ってジャムセッションを展開するのです。
