これが“CLASH OF THE TITANS”の全体像。SLAYER／MEGADETHを軸として、TESTAMENTかANTHRAXが準レギュラー。さらにSUICIDAL TENDENCIES、ALICE IN CHAINSといった旬のバンドが加わった豪華ラインアップでした。そして、この中で最もコアで伝説的なのは、唯一ヨーロッパで行われたオリジナルの1990年版。本作のストックホルム公演は、わずか18公演のうち14公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
“CLASH OF THE TITANS”は伝説であると同時に、秘境でもありました。当時の世界はクウェート侵攻の衝撃に揺れており、湾岸戦争へまっしぐら。地理的にも近いヨーロッパはロックやメタルにうつつを抜かす状態ではなく、話題のツアーであってもラジオやテレビ放送は望むべくもなかった。そして、オーディエンス録音にしても各バンド個別か、クオリティに難があるかのどちらかであり、出演４組全部を極上体験できる記録は皆無と言っても良い状態だったのです。
そんな歴史に終始を打つのが、本作。最近になって突如として公開されたマスターなのですが、これがもう「超」付きの極上。当時のスラッシュは爆音・轟音で上等というイメージもあったわけですが、本作は美麗・端麗。もちろん、バンド側の出音は強力無比なわけですが、それでもまったくビビることなく、ディテールも鮮明。リフの１つひとつがエッジ鋭くシャープに轟き、バスドラ連打も１発１発が際立っている。さすがにサウンドボード的なド密着感ではないものの、それも欠点ではなく美点。スカスカ感のない密度は強力ですし、何よりリアルな現場ムードに胸が熱くなる。当時、雑誌記事と幾つかの写真しか知る由のなかった憧れの空間に身を置けるのですから……。

そして、そんなキリッと辛口な端麗サウンドで描かれるのは、四者四様のスラッシュ・パラダイス。何しろ、時期が凄すぎる。SLAYERはオリジナル４人が揃っていた『SEASONS IN THE ABYSS』時代ですし、MEGADETHはマーティ・フリードマン＆ニック・メンザが加入した『RUST IN PEACE』時代、TESTAMENTもアレックス・スコルニックがいる”黄金の５人”でした。そして、SUICIDAL TENDENCIES。現METALLICAのロバート・トゥルージロを迎えた『LIGHTS… CAMERA… REVOLUTION!』をリリースし、DEATH ANGELやMORDREDと共にファンク・スラッシュの開祖として気を吐いていました。そんな４バンドが同じ会場で鎬を削り合うのですから、伝説になるのも必然。本作は、その歴史的事実を理屈ではなく音楽で証明する音の証拠品なのです。
